Panda Express - Hilo (Kilauea Avenue)
About
Convenient Flavors in the Heart of Hilo
When you find yourself navigating the streets of Hilo and craving a fast, familiar meal, the Panda Express located along Kilauea Avenue offers a consistent pit stop. It serves as a reliable option for locals and visitors alike who are looking for American-Chinese comfort food without the wait of a traditional sit-down establishment.
The Signature Experience
The air inside is immediately filled with the savory, caramelized scent of their trademark Orange Chicken—a dish that balances crispy tempura-battered protein with a zesty, tangy glaze. You will see staff working behind the glass, portioning out heaping scoops of chow mein and fried rice onto divided plates. The menu keeps things straightforward, focusing on crowd-pleasing staples like Broccoli Beef and the sweet, slightly spicy Honey Walnut Shrimp.
Practical Dining in East Hawaii
This location is ideal for those balancing a busy itinerary or seeking a quick lunch break. While the interior is functional and bright, it is worth noting that the drive-thru and takeout lines can get quite busy during the lunch rush, so plan your arrival accordingly. The seating area provides a no-frills environment, perfect for a casual grab-and-go meal as you head out to explore the botanical gardens or make your way toward the Hilo Bayfront. It remains a staple for anyone who values efficiency and predictable, satisfying flavors in the Big Island’s primary hub.

A clean chain that delivers consistently what we want, at our price point. Appreciate them sharing wait times for certain entrees that are running low. Fast food with free fortune cookies.

$13.9 +tax for a bigger plate with fresh meats and veggies is a hard-to-beat value on the island. The associates are very friendly and they don’t provide a tip option. 🤣. We come here twice on a Sunday where many other restaurants closed. Positive experience!

This is a lovely food oasis in a restaurant desert. This is a bright spot in a run-down town. It was clean inside and the servers were friendly and helpful.

I really like this restaurant! You can choose the plate size and see all the options. If you’re not sure, ask to taste . We usually get a bigger plate to share for $14 – such a good deal. The orange chicken and Beijing beef are a must. It’s a fast option, and they have parking too.

I bought 3 plates from this Panda Express location. In one of them I found a roach under all of the food/mixed into the rice after eating some of it. I called to notify them. They said to come back to replace the plate. We did not eat any of the other plates and certainly didn’t want a replacement because they all would most likely have been in contact with the roach since it was found in the food. They were only able to refund us for the one plate and not the whole order even though we can assume they all were contaminated. This location hasn’t given us a problem before, but this was disgusting enough to keep me away for a while.

Are you starved for culinary convenience, a flavorful facility & or an experience that's expressly designated for a serious chopstick chow-down? Then look no further than one of our own, worst kept secrets, that's conspicuously located in the hearts and stomachs of downtown Hilo - Panda Express. I'm telling you their portion to price ratio has, and will always remain, undefeated with my pocketbook. However, let the record reflect, its the staffing that retains its customer and not just their succulent mushroom chicken, arguably...wink.

This was my first time eating at Panda Express, and it made a really good first impression. There were many options to choose from, and the honey walnut shrimp was amazing!

Lovely service and food is fresh. Very much enjoyed the orange chicken, not so much the black pepper Angus beef. Rice was good and servings were acceptable for the price point. Check out my food Instagram @erinxeats for more!
