A Taste of Thailand in the Heart of Hilo

Stepping into Naung Mai Thai Kitchen feels like wandering into a family kitchen tucked away from the Hilo rain. The air is thick with the scent of toasted chilies, fresh holy basil, and the sharp, bright citrus notes of lemongrass that signal a meal made from scratch. It is a no-frills, counter-service operation where the focus remains strictly on the intensity of the aromatics rather than white-tablecloth pretense.

Signature Spice and Culinary Heritage

Chef Pui brings authentic Northern Thai influence to the Big Island. The menu is celebrated for its uncompromising approach to heat—when they say spicy, they mean it. The signature Khao Soi is a standout, featuring a rich, golden curry broth that clings perfectly to the soft egg noodles, topped with a satisfying crunch of fried noodles. For those who enjoy a sharper profile, the Papaya Salad hits with a chaotic, delicious mix of lime juice, fish sauce, and bird's eye chilies that wakes up every taste bud.

Know Before You Go

The space is functional and modest, reflecting the local Hilo style where the quality of the curry matters more than the decor. Expect to navigate a busy lunch rush; the popularity of this spot means the small seating area fills up quickly, and parking can be a bit of a challenge during peak hours. If you are looking for a quick, authentic, and unapologetically flavorful meal that skips the tourist gimmicks, this is your primary stop in Hilo. It is the kind of place you visit when you crave food that reminds you of a street market halfway across the globe, served right here in our island community.

Another Gem hidden downtown Hilo behind that pineapple tourist trap... This place has absolutely amazing food. I ordered the Tofu green curry. It comes with a side of rice. The size of the fresh veggies in this meal were very large. The curry was good. I would highly recommend anyone to find this spot and go there asap.

We had planned to go to the pho restaurant next door, but they turned us away and I’m so glad they did!! Our meal was delicious! We had the cucumber salad (it was spicy, but amazing), the summer spring rolls helped tamper down the heat. The chicken pad Thai was soo good! I’ve had some pad Thai where the chicken was dry, but not theirs, it was tender and juicy! The people there welcomed us and made us feel comfortable and welcome. I highly recommend this sweet little place!!

To-go order of mixed vegetables got it home and saw it was only half full so guess the jokes on me. But thats ok was completely void of any flavor so less I had to throw away. a noodle dish wasnt any better. Wont be back but maybe the curries are the way to go if you insist on flavorful food.

Finally tried this great local Thai place right behind garden exchange. First off, pride of ownership is obvious once you step inside. Great friendly service, good size menu, good portions, and the place is very clean, even the bathrooms around back. We got the seafood fried rice, the coconut shrimp appetizer and the panang curry beef. Everything was delicious.

Really tasty dinner. Got the curry, brown rice, and cashew chicken. Felt like they were really watered down which also kept the flavors from being as strong which was disappointing because I did appreciated the spice. Also asked for hot and felt it was more of a mild. Worth going to nonetheless

This Thai restaurant offers a good number of vegetarian options, though the space itself is quite small. Service was quick and friendly, but the food didn’t fully deliver. The fried rice was a bit bland, while the curry—ordered medium—came out noticeably spicier than expected. The spring rolls were a highlight, but the brown rice was slightly undercooked. Overall, it’s an okay spot, but not particularly memorable.

Quaint restaurant atmosphere with delicious authentic Thai food! Portions were huge, reasonably priced for Hawaii and flavor brought us back to our trip in Thailand. The server was very friendly and she greeted us with a smile. Would highly recommend recommend eating here

Visited this cute little Thai spot in Hilo, Hawaii about a week ago. Food: I eat a lot of Thai food, and I will say right away that the flavor of the food here is unique. For our appetizer, we got the Thai Spring Rolls. They were very fresh and it is a decently large portion size. I ordered the Pad See Ui and it was nothing like any other Pad See Ui I've ever had, but it was delicious! The dish also tasted very clean- not super oily. My boyfriend got the Pad Thai and cleaned his plate. I'm not usually a Pad Thai fan, but I even had a bite and enjoyed it :). Portion sizes for entrées are generous. I also ordered a Thai Tea and it was perfect. My boyfriend got the Thai Coffee and it was strong and yummy! Service: Our server was very sweet. I think that it was hard for her to understand us at times, but regardless, we had a great experience. Atmosphere: Very cute, cozy, comfortable interior. Seems to be a locally known place. We saw people coming in and chatting with one of the employees so it seems that they knew each other. I really enjoyed dining here. TLDR: Cute place, good food, and good service! Would love to come back here next time I'm in Hilo.

Enjoyed eating at this establishment, hosted was accommodating to our last minute 8 party reservation request and allowed us to split the bill. Food was had good flavors, with some dishes better than others and otherwise solid. Tasted more like how dishes would come out being cooked at home and less like those at other Thai restaurants I've been to with a few more tricks, but solid fare. I believe our waitress said the restaurant opened in 2022, and I wish them well.
