Island-Style Seafood in the Heart of Hilo

When you find yourself roaming the streets of Hilo, there is a distinct craving that only deep-fried, golden perfection can satisfy. Mo's Fish & Chips delivers exactly that—a no-frills, honest approach to Pacific seafood that leans into the laid-back pace of the Big Island. The space is modest, often buzzing with locals grabbing a quick lunch between shifts, and the air carries the unmistakable, savory scent of seasoned batter hitting the fryer.

The Catch of the Day

This isn't about white-tablecloth service; it’s about the crunch. The menu focuses on fresh-caught fish, prepared with a light, airy crust that shatters on contact. You’ll find the portions are generous, often served in the classic basket style that makes it the perfect stop for a casual refueling session. If you are looking for an authentic Hilo experience, pair your basket with their house-made tartar sauce—a tangy, herbaceous secret recipe that cuts right through the richness of the fish.

A Local Hangout

The interior feels like a true neighborhood fixture. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge finding parking during the peak lunch hour, as the local crowd packs the lot early. It is loud, vibrant, and moves at the speed of island life. If you want a meal that feels like it was cooked in a friend's kitchen, this is your spot. It is the ideal destination for anyone tired of tourist-trap dining who prefers a genuine, crispy bite of Hilo’s maritime tradition.

HANDS DOWN the VERY BEST Fish and Chips you'll ever have. We enjoyed their awesome super crisp and flavorful breading; huge tiger shrimp and delicious Ono. Service was excellent. Our family's favorite place for a great meal.

TOURIST TRAP! Very disappointing experience at Mohala’s. We arrived (party of 6) looking for a casual, reasonably priced seafood experience. After at least a 45 minute wait for our drinks and food, which was just okay and quite greasy, we were hit with almost $100 in automatically included gratituity plus an automatic tip on our bill- there was no mention by our server of automatic gratuity or tips, as is required. All in all we were unpleasantly surprised and hoodwinked into spending more than double on what we expected would be a quick lunch- for $350+ you might as well go eat at the four seasons. Would not return.

The fish and chips here was the second best meal my wife had on our whole trip to big island, and it lost to a much, much, much more expensive luau. You must eat here if you come to Hilo. I’ve had fish and chips in London and around the US. I’m no food critic but I’ve had enough to have opinions. The mahi mahi fish and chips with the garlic dill sauce is the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. My wife, conversely, almost never goes for fish and chips, and she loved the ono. Go here, eat, you are welcome.

great fish, great service (thank you Kate!) the open mic was entertaining, just a good spot for good food. Large portions and decent prices. I Recommend the captains platter, it fed three people.

Best fried food I’ve had on all the islands during my trip (including Kauai and Maui). The service was slow although it appeared to only be 2 people working a very busy place. Even with being short staffed and busy the staff were super pleasant. This is definitely worth a visit and a wait.

I absolutely loved this place. I ordered the mahi mahi sandwich on a brioche bread and some sweet potatoe fries. It was absolutely delicious. So good that halfway through it I ordered Ono and fries to take home and eat later. The bar is nicely decorated and wasn't too crowded. I witnessed the bartender let a pregnant lady from outside use the bathroom and thought that was extremely nice, while some places can be very stern about that. The wait wasn't too bad. I came mid day and would recommend that as I was quickly served. The pricing was great and worth every bit.

HORRIBLE experience. Everyone who ate seafood in our party either threw up multiple times, had diarrhea, or was very nauseous. Here’s the run down of our experience: 1. We got food poisoning that same night after dining here for dinner 2. Greeted by an extremely rude male bartender who continued to be unpleasant through the night. Couldn’t be bothered to pour us water so he left a water pitcher and cups at our table, while other tables after us were being given individual glasses. There was only 4 of us so it wasn’t a big group… 3. Learned all the fish was FROZEN, not fresh. How can you serve frozen fish/seafood for the prices you’re charging?! You guys also advertise that you serve food “made with fresh ingredients” which is false advertising… 4. Out of tartar sauce, fish sandwich, lemons… how can you be out of these basic things for a seafood restaurant?? 5. Waited 55 minutes for COLD, INEDIBLE food… 6. Horrible customer service throughout the night, no one attending our table. Took forever for anyone to take our order. Had to go up to the bar to ask for ketchup and lemon and the rude male bartender said he couldn’t help us because he had to make two drinks and to tell our server (who was no where to be found hence why we went up to the bar) 7. Charged $12 for 6 (SIX!!) onion rings and they weren’t even full sized… we got bits and pieces and the inner most layer of the onion—what a rip! 8. Wasn’t provided an itemized receipt, only a machine to pay with the total, and when asked about it, instead of proactively showing us or printing out a receipt, Kaneau said “oh perfect, I can stand here and take a break…” we were already so disgusted with our experience here we just wanted to leave already, but good thing I texted myself a receipt because that’s when I found out we were being overcharged… 9. Found HIDDEN UPCHARGES AND FEES on receipt… no wonder why Kaneau didn’t want to give us an itemized receipt because would have questioned it… super sketchy business practice and we should be refunded the difference We love supporting local businesses and have worked in the food industry, so we tried to approach the situation with patience and grace, but bruahhhh, this experience was shockingly bad from start to finish and being hit with food poisoning afterward made it even worse. Truly a horrible, disappointing experience.

The seafood: FRESH. The fried fish crunch factor: PERFECT. The sauces: DELICIOUS. Service was amazing and personal. Enjoy the Oahu scallops, the jumbo shrimp and Mahi Mahi fish. Sauces are made in the kitchen. My favorite was the garlic fill tartar sauce. They have TVs and chill setup. Even the fries were on point.

This place was recommended as the BEST fish and chips in Hilo by my Tour Operator and boy was he right! The food and custom sauces were amazing! Also our server at the bar needs a raise! This man not only gave great recommendations but he was handling everyone at the bar, dining area, pickup orders...he was everywhere, my buddy and I were thoroughly impressed watching him in action! Idk what he gets paid but seriously though...pay the man more!!

Food was absolutely incredible! I wish there would have been more of a view of the nearby ocean and the wait staff was slow. It was a long wait for the food but definitely worth it. Definitely get the malt vinegar aoli, so awesome!
