A Taste of Home in Downtown Hilo

Walking into Moms Hilo feels like stepping into a friend’s kitchen where the coffee is always brewing and the breakfast plates are piled high. Located right in the middle of Hilo’s historic district, this spot has become a local staple for those seeking honest, no-fuss comfort food before heading out to explore the Big Island’s rainforests and waterfalls.

What to Expect on Your Plate

The menu leans heavily into local island favorites. You will find hearty portions of loco moco that prioritize traditional gravy and perfectly fried eggs. The kitchen moves quickly, serving up thick slices of French toast and classic breakfast combos that hit the spot after a rainy Hilo morning. Everything here is prepared with a straightforward approach—focusing on warmth rather than pretense.

The Atmosphere and Local Vibe

Expect a casual, bustling environment where the sound of clinking silverware competes with the hum of the overhead fans. It is the kind of place where you might find yourself squeezed into a corner booth, but the tight quarters are part of the charm. The walls are adorned with local photography, and the staff carries the easy-going Hilo pace that defines the community. Whether you are a resident grabbing a quick morning fuel-up or a traveler looking for a grounded start to your day in East Hawaii, the environment is welcoming and unpretentious.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

Parking can be a bit of a challenge given its prime position near the shops, so arrive early if you are on a tight schedule. It is an ideal stop for families or solo diners who want to escape the tourist-heavy spots and eat alongside the Hilo locals. If you are craving a filling meal that prioritizes quality ingredients over flash, this neighborhood diner delivers exactly what you need.

EDIT: Chef Ahren is no longer the Sushi chef there and is opening up his own Omakaze Sushi restaurant. So not sure about the quality any longer. Hope they can keep up with what he did. This is the best sushi me and my wife have had, in a long long time. She’s lived in Tokyo Japan and said this is like that sushi, fresh, well prepared, and the service is so fast and the staff always remembers your name. We come here very chance we get.

Absolutely loved this meal. We had the udon soup, miso soup, edamame and the ahi roll. Service was timely and good. Food was excellent. Loved the vibe. Fantastic place ❤️

Pretty decent sushi for the price. Service was terrible though! They screwed up my nigiri combo (have the extra sushi as comp which was nice but I did not enjoy the one that i got by accident. I had to ask for water. Then the two waitress hid in the back talking story. I had to flag them down to ask for a to go box and the bill after waiting for 15 min (I piled my plate so it was obvious I was done but they weren't even in sight even though I could here them laughing and talking in the back). I'll have to really think hard if I want to go back. Maybe they just had off night but it was pretty empty so I know it wasn't that they were busy.

We ate here our first evening in Hilo based on reviews, and it was so good we came back the next night. They d Mouse id not disappoint! The sushi was amazing, but the second night we decided to try one of the noodle bowls. The Garlic Yakisoba with chicken was absolutely amazing (our server’s solicited noodle recommendation). We chose spicy - the perfect amount of bite. This locally owned place is a mandatory stop when you’re in Hilo.

Great attentive service. Fire cracker roll was super tasty, cucumber salad was crispy and fresh. Good seasoning in everything. We got the ramen and udon too with a few other rolls and it all was very good!

Christmas Eve, the power was out at the hotels, we called and Mom’s fit in our large party. The food was phenomenal and so fresh. The service was beyond what we would expect, so kind and accommodating. Mom’s will definitely be our go to from now on!

Atmosphere: I know roaches are ubiquitous in tropical climates, but having one cruising around the inside of the sushi counter was off putting. Unfortunately I saw it after eating. Service: We put our name in for a reservation and we were never called back. We returned after over an hour and were seated but they rushed the service. We had 4 different people serve us and it seemed very unorganized Food: It was meh.

A wonderful experience now that I FINALLY got in here after six months! They were out of my favorite sake .... But, the sushi and waitress was so amazing it wasn't that big of an issue! The chef rocked and gave us what we asked, at a cost, of course. But, all around I have no regrets and we will be back! I recommend!

This place was amazing! We loved everything we got, the 10 piece chef special Nigiri set, spicy ahi roll, salmon avocado roll and the tan tan noodles warm with an egg added on. We found them on google maps after looking for a sushi place to dine at after 12 hours at Volcano National Park. Our waitress told us the chef makes the rice fresh daily and the fish is delivered daily whole and the chef hand cuts each fish himself. The fish was so soft and tender. Highly recommend!! We will be back next time we are on the Big Island.
