A Japanese Culinary Tradition in Hilo Town

Perched right along the banks of the Wailuku River, Miyo's offers a dining experience that feels like a hidden retreat within Hilo. The atmosphere is quiet and unpretentious, defined by large windows that invite the lush, rain-fed greenery of East Hawaii indoors. It is the kind of place where locals head when they want a reliable, home-style meal without the fuss of downtown tourist traps.

Savoring Local Favorites

The menu leans heavily into Japanese comfort food, perfected over years of serving the Hilo community. Regulars know to order the signature shrimp tempura, noted for its light, airy batter, or the shabu-shabu, which arrives at the table with an interactive, bubbling warmth. The sashimi is consistently fresh, reflecting the proximity to Hilo’s active fishing harbor. Whether you are craving a steaming bowl of udon or a set menu that balances protein with pickled sides, the kitchen delivers consistent, unfussy plates.

The Hilo Dining Experience

Stepping into Miyo's provides a distinct sense of place. The sound of the nearby river creates a natural soundtrack that complements the low hum of conversation. While the parking lot can get a bit cramped during the peak lunch rush when office workers from nearby government buildings descend for their break, the trade-off is the serenity of the river view. It is an ideal spot for a calm lunch or an understated dinner where the focus remains on the food and the natural beauty surrounding the Waianuenue Avenue corridor. You won't find flashy decor here, just solid, authentic flavors that have kept this establishment a mainstay for decades.

Lilikoi sorbet and mango ice cream rounded out our delicious meals of Poke over rice and a snapper special. Food was delicious and service was great. Every time we visit the b Big Island we head to Miyo's. Can't wait to go back on our next trip to Hilo.

Food was great, easy to find parking. I personally love the Izakaya side where the Bar is. Loved the Fried tofu, deep fried scallops, crispy rice, deep fried oysters. The tartar sauce is ono. There's a lot of regulars that come here, the staff seems to know them all by name. Staff is friendly. Oh and their cocktails are awesome too.🍸🍹 Also had to mention they use high quality meats and seafood. If they can't get good quality they won't serve it....I appreciate that type of pride in an establishment. Always love coming here every time we fly in from Oahu. They change the menu every now and then so it keeps it interesting, and they keep their amazing staples like the egg toast 😋

I entered this restaurant full of high expectations, but after our order, we had to wait more than 40 minutes for our food ,The delay wasn't due to the restaurant being particularly busy—in fact, service at other tables was quite fast; other diners had finished their meals before ours had even been served. I admit that my children eventually lost their patience. Furthermore, the food we received was disappointing: the chicken katsu was cold not hot,and the teriyaki beef was unevenly cooked—some parts were seared to a burnt black, while others were still red,It was a truly disappointing experience. the waitstaff were polite and always smiling, the quality of the food—especially considering the price point—has completely dampened my enthusiasm for ever visiting this establishment again.

The Soft Shell Crab was decent, but the rest of the meal was a massive disappointment for the price. Traditional Shabu-shabu and Sukiyaki should feature paper-thin beef. Instead, we were served thick chunks of beef that felt like they belonged in a cheap bowl of soy sauce beef udon. For a restaurant at this high price point, the execution is simply not there. In any other major city with a competitive food scene, this place wouldn't last two months. Overpriced and underwhelming.

Very kind of them to accommodate our party of 10 during a busy time (Merrie Monarch). The Seafood Yosenabe Hot Pot has a substantial amount of Seafood with wonderful flavors. Included Ponzu sauce and rice.

This is my all time favorite when visiting Hilo! In fact I'll drive from Kona to Hilo just to eat there! The Food is top notch, excellent customer service and atmosphere and competitively priced.

Great local spot with some ono food options. I especially love their combination plates — perfect for someone like me who can never pick just one dish. You get to sample a bit of everything, and it’s always delicious. The cocktails are tasty too, which makes it an easy go to place whenever friends or family come to visit and want to taste a variety of Hawai’i foods. Definitely a staple in the area!

Decent but not as good as I expected. Luckily there wasn’t a wait when we arrived. The hosts brought us to our table immediately. It took a while for our server to get to us (seemed understaffed) but she was really nice. We ordered the fries, ribeye steak with shrimp tempura & 2 bent box. The food was tasty unfortunately the tempura was soggy.

Ah! Came here for lunch with my partner and it was so so good! They don't even offer fork and knife (you have to ask for them i think), because they gave us chopsticks! That was a first for me and it shows how authentic and good this food is! 😋

The food is excellent here and so is service. Shrimp tempura was melt in your mouth, goodness! The vegetable tempura was cooked to perfection. I enjoyed eating the sashimi. The food presentation is also good, as shown in the pictures below. It was very busy around 7 pm, almost no tables were available. Reservations are important to avoid any waiting. I definitely recommend this restaurant for excellent seafood and steak.
