A Splash of Baja in East Hawaii

Stepping into Margarita Village feels like a shift in pace from the rainy Hilo rhythm. Located right in the heart of the downtown district, this spot brings a vibrant, salt-rimmed energy to the Big Island. The interior is anchored by warm tones and the constant, rhythmic shucking of fresh ingredients, creating an atmosphere that favors loud conversations and long, lingering lunches.

The Kitchen’s Philosophy

Chef-driven and unpretentious, the menu leans heavily into coastal Mexican traditions adapted for the local palate. You’ll find signature staples here, like their carnitas that benefit from a slow-simmering process, resulting in a texture that balances crispy edges with tender, juice-filled meat. The house-made salsa carries a consistent, bright heat that cuts through the richness of the guacamole. If you visit, keep in mind that the local Hilo crowd loves this place during the lunch rush, so you might find yourself navigating a bustling room where the wait staff moves with practiced, frantic efficiency.

Why Visit the Village?

Whether you are a local resident looking for a reliable midweek taco fix or a visitor winding down after a trek through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this establishment offers a grounded, flavorful retreat. The scent of roasted chiles and fresh cilantro hits you the moment the door swings open, signaling that everything here is prepared from scratch. While the proximity to the main downtown thoroughfares means parking can be a bit of a challenge during peak afternoon hours, the payoff—a perfectly tart lime margarita paired with house-fried chips—is well worth the extra lap around the block.

Love the staff. Love the environment. Great place to play pool with friends late night. Music selection is very diverse. Bartenders singing often and making the environment welcoming. Small kind grinds but good for late night. Definitely recommend visiting this spot. The pricing is on point to get a lot of value for a lower price than most bars.

Its a hit or miss. So many bar tenders have come and gone that it really is just that, a hit or miss. It all comes down to whos working sometimes. Ive had great people, and ive had, you name it. Just go with a spectators mindset. No expectations.

Fun dive bar. Could mix it up with staff on the week ends that would be cool. Also if the bartender had control of the jukebox when ppl came to sing on the week ends that would be cool as well. We waited over an HR to sing waiting for an old timer to finish his songs he dumped his whole savings into the jutebox so ppl wouldn't sing, since he knows the bartender had a rule that nobody sings till jutebox is done. We ended up leaving. Drinks are good!

It was really busy tonight for Halloween, but the bartender on duty, Kaya, was totally on the ball, really rocking it with getting everyone their drinks, taking order after order. The drinks we had were all very good as well. The Halloween decorations were also quite nice and the overall vibe of the place was very fun and energetic. I suppose the music was a little bit too loud for my taste, but that's just a personal thing. In terms of what Hilo has to offer for bars, this is definitely one of the top picks.

Yeah, it's a dive bar, but it's a hell of a great place to grab a drink. We went in on a Wednesday night, so there weren't many people there, but the folks that were there made this bar a highlight of our trip. A guy named Nate was tending bar, testing out new drinks, and just generally being a friendly bar tender. A couple other people were there, and they were the first friendly locals we got to talk to while we were on vacation. We shared some drinks, played some drinking games, and just generally had a good time. So, if you're visiting Hilo, and you don't know what to do with your evening, give this place a shot. If the people sitting at the bar ask you to drink a Red Rooster with them, do it, and if the strange guy talking to himself in the corner asks if you want to play a drinking game, take him up on it. The guys we met gave us some great tips on where to eat, what to go see, etc, and it led to us having a great time. So, come here for good drinks that are very fairly priced, and feel free to talk to the people around you.
