About
A Parisian Escape in Hilo Town
Le Yellow Sub brings a refreshing slice of European cafe culture to the heart of Hilo. Tucked away from the bustling main thoroughfares, this spot has become a local secret for those craving something other than traditional Hawaiian plate lunches. The aroma of freshly pressed crepes hitting the iron greets you the moment you walk through the door, mixing with the sharp scent of imported cheeses and high-quality deli meats.
The Art of the Sub
The kitchen leans heavily into classic French techniques, elevating the humble sandwich. Their baguette work is standout—crusty on the outside with that essential, airy chew that makes a sandwich feel substantial rather than heavy. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch while exploring the downtown Hilo area or settling in for a mid-afternoon snack, the menu focuses on balance. If you lean toward the sweet side, their dessert crepes, folded with precision and generous fillings, are a must-try after your main course.
What to Expect
The space carries a relaxed, unpretentious energy that mirrors the easygoing pace of the Big Island. Be prepared for a cozy, tight-knit layout; it is not a place for sprawling parties, but it is perfect for solo diners or couples looking for a quiet, high-quality bite. Keep an eye out for their daily specials, which often highlight local produce integrated into traditional recipes. It is worth noting that space inside is limited, so if you visit during the peak lunch rush, you might find yourself waiting a few moments for a seat, but the payoff is a meal that feels curated rather than rushed.

There are many good Vietnamese restaurants in the area but whenever I can I prefer to hit up Le Yellow Sub. Auntie Le is so friendly, and always delivers fresh and delicious banh mi at an affordable price. I only wish it were open everyday !

We walked by the food bus and bought one Sandwich. It was very tasty. We talked with the lady a while. She is very nice. Compare to the food from other restaurants her sandwich is more cost effective. Will buy in future.

We had the pork lemongrass banh mi and the daily special banh mi, which was a sweet and spicy sausage that is a local favorite. Both were delicious and so flavorful. Employees all so friendly here and a lovely area to enjoy a quick outdoor bite. May get to share a picnic table with some new friends or take a picnic blanket or chairs and sit in park like setting behind the food trucks.

I had the tofu bhanmi and the tofu, rice noodle salad. Both excellent. The location is right next to a park and there are a few other food trucks.. pizza, coffee, giros...

My husband and I love love love eating here after a hard workout. The food is fresh, homemade, healthy and just down right Delicious. My husband orders the Lemongrass Chicken Ba’nh-mi and I get the Vegetarian. The owner is sooooo nice. She comes over to our table and tells us that she grows the fresh herbs in her garden, and that goes on top of the sandwiches. We’re so glad we found this little gem in Hilo💕💕💕

Great vegetarian banh mi at this cash-only food truck! Quality, authentic bread paired well with a well-fried-and-seasoned tofu cutlet--the herbs and fixings elevated the experience. Service was warm and friendly, kindly referring me to their neighbor truck for coffee as I only had cash enough for my sandwich. Lovely place to grab-and-go to sit and enjoy your lunch at the Lili'uokalani Gardens. Looking to return whenever I can get down here during lunch!

This is a MUST visit. All the ingredients are super fresh - crispy veggies, crunchy bacon, soft bread with a good crust that I expect with a banh mi (none of that cut the roof of your mouth type of bread). Plus the service is a delight. We ordered fresh squeezed lime juice, crispy spring rolls, pate bacon banh mi, and pork lemongrass with pate banh mi. Wish I had a big enough stomach to order it all again right now 😁
