A Taste of Northern India in Hilo

Tucked away near the heart of Hilo, Kamana Kitchen 2 offers a respite from the humid island breeze with the scent of toasted cumin and simmering cardamom. Stepping inside, the atmosphere is refreshingly unpretentious, defined by warm, earthy tones that ground you before the main event arrives. It is the kind of place that rewards those looking for genuine comfort food, whether you are a local seeking a spicy lunch or a traveler finished with a day of exploring the nearby waterfalls.

Signature Spices and Culinary Tradition

The kitchen leans heavily into the traditions of Northern Indian cooking. You will find the clay oven, or tandoor, working overtime to produce their signature garlic naan—perfectly charred at the edges and pillowy soft in the middle. The chicken tikka masala here avoids the overly sweet trap; instead, it relies on a robust, tomato-based gravy that balances acidity with a deep, buttery finish. Their menu spans a wide range of vegetarian and meat-based curries, with the saag paneer being a reliable standout for those who enjoy the earthy texture of fresh spinach.

Know Before You Go

While the service is typically swift, don't be surprised if the dining room hums with a high-energy buzz during the peak Hilo lunch rush; it’s a popular spot for the local working crowd. Parking in this part of town can occasionally be a bit of a dance, so plan for a brief walk if the immediate lot is at capacity. It is an ideal spot for groups who want to share a variety of platters, allowing everyone to sample the heat levels across the menu. Whether you are craving the slow-simmered depth of a lamb rogan josh or just need a quick, steaming cup of masala chai, this Hilo establishment remains a consistent staple for Big Island residents seeking bold, aromatic flavors.

We always try to get Indian food when we go on vacation so we’re pleased to find this restaurant. I have to say the food wasn’t bad but the restaurant itself was disgusting. The decor was very shabby and all of the vents in the dining room were filthy, (see photo). The plates were brought to the table on a dirty bus cart which I’m sure was used to clear away plates too. This restaurant needs to invest in customer service training, some fresh paint and some cleaning supplies.

First time having Indian food was here and honestly im spoiled now xD phenomenal quality, doesn’t take long to get your food, you get a free cup of water when you sit down, seldom busy, I was worried the food portions were gonna be too small at first but it’s way more filling then leads on. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. Expensive in the way anything else in Hawai’i is unfortunately T-T so overall 5/5 and get the cheesy garlic naan🫓

Fish curry was very good. Asked spicy and that's what we got. Chicken biryani was flavorful. Garlic naam was perfectly done. Impeccable service. Had an issue and plate was replaced promptly. This is a must try hilo spot. And not expensive for the portion sizes.

This place is hard to review and is pretty frustrating to be honest. Been here around 4-5 times now. The food mostly tastes great which is the only reason I have gone back. Chicken Tiki masala is usually good, nan and samosas too. The gulab jamun is good (when they have them) and the kheer is decent. This place falls short with the customer service and pricing, especially the online ordering system. You have the option to “bundle” your order with extras when ordering online. For example: if getting aloo gobi as an entree you can also add on sides of nan, pakora/samosas, lassis etc., instead of placing a separate order for the side items. However, if they do not have these items available, it’ll still allow you to order them but will not be able to get your money back once finding out they're not available. They claim they can’t refund you because of how you order them/the bundle situation. This has happened to me 3 times now, with two times not receiving a refund and once being given an alternative (btw do not get the pistachio ice cream, it tastes artificial). For me, this place charges way too much to be anything less than accommodating and with good customer service-especially when it comes to receiving refunds for items they don’t have but still allow you to order! They have the fortune of being pretty much the only Indian food restaurant on this side of the island, so I’m sure they’ll continue to get away with the mediocrity and poor service. Just my opinion.

First time having Indian food on the island and man, loved this place! We had the chicken tikka, mixed tandoori grill, lamb curry and non veg thali platter. Authentic flavors, cooked perfectly, generous portion and good prices. Also the garlic cheese naan, onion kufta and mango lassi were like i had in India. Can't wait to try more of the menu

Food was alright, customer service was fine and the overall restaurant was alright. It was the only restaurant open on the Christmas day and we were happy to get something to eat as everything else was closed. The restaurant can be better managed. The food can be improved as well. We liked the food we got. The mango lassi was ok. We ordered the vegetarian Thali of which the green saag was good, pakoras which were very oily, mutter paneer was good, naan and kulcha were fine. The lentil soup was mild and decent. While paying for the check, we were asked for tip when gratuity was already included.

This is some of the best Indian food we've had and my wife grew up in a traditional Pakistani household. We had the chicken tika masala level hot, mixed pakora, and garlic cheese naan. The level hot was pretty spicy for my whitie butt, but it was perfect for my wife. The garlic cheese naan was the best we have ever had. The pakora was packed with flavor. We definitely highly recommend this place for the food. The atmosphere was mediocre and the service was fast once we ordered food. Ill forgive all wrongs when the food is spectacular!

We arrived here for dinner on the Christmas day. This rating is for the staff - who were visibly understaffed and doing their best to welcome the relentless guests with a smile. They were huffing and puffing all throughout our meal. Huge ups for the staff to keep the business open on a holiday. We got vegetable pakora, butter chicken, mango lassi and chicken biryani. The pakora was a little oily for our liking but was well seasoned. The butter chicken was decent with creamy gravy. The biryani was a little spicy for medium level and leaned more towards pulao. The chicken pieces in the biryani were chewy and overcooked. The food isn’t the best nor the most authentic but that’s a discussion for another day. If you come looking for Indian food in Hawaii, that’s on you. The food was decent enough with amazing staff and we were grateful for a meal on a holiday night.

First of all the staff was very friendly. Ordered the tiki masala, medium heat and garlic naan. It came with a small portion of delicious rice. Chasing Medium heat was perfect for me, spicy but not too hot. Have to say this was the BEST naan bread I’ve ever eaten. Perfectly crispy on the bottom, yet soft and so flavorful on the top. No burnt garlic, as I’ve gotten elsewhere. As for the chicken in my tiki masala, unfortunately the chicken was very dry. The sauce was good, a little more warm spices than I typically like, but it was good. As for the atmosphere, the booth I was seated and had a bright light right above it And the restaurant itself was not extremely welcoming. I’ve noticed this a lot of her here in Hawaii. So I wasn’t Super disappointed. Other than that bright light. Also, I didn’t have anyone really come back to my table and ask if everything was OK or if I’d like to have dessert. I think they made a missing on some revenue by not Suggesting certain beverages and also desserts. Definitely good value for the money. I took half of my meal home with me and reheat it for lunch and it was As good if not better today. I would recommend reheating any of Me, Meet entrées On the stove top and if you happen to get some of the delicious naan and have an air fryer, that’s the way to go. All in all I would definitely recommend.KAMANA Kitchen One more thing, it’s kinda hard to actually find the restaurant. There’s a sign in the plaza that’s not lit up. No signage pointing down a Type of alleyway where the restaurants are located. I could smell the food, but couldn’t find the restaurant until I asked someone who was in the parking lot.

Firstly, after missing our comfortable food for 5 days, we came across Kamana Kitchen serving Indian food in the big island. We ordered veg thali and non-veg thali. The portion size is impeccable and they have a great variety of dishes a part of the thali. For the appetizers, they served us veg samosa and pakora as part of veg thali and meat samosa and chicken pakora as part of the non-veg thali. Everything tasted amazing and seasoned to perfection. As part of the main course, we got a plate of 3 curries, aloo matter, palak panner and dal fry as part of veg thali and chicken tikka masala, mutton curry and dal fry as part of non/veg thali with 2 naans (which is 4 pieces) for each thali. Everything given in the main course was served hot and tasted great. Lastly, there was rice kheer as part of the dessert which was out of the world. Highly recommend the restaurant to anyone who wants to eat Indian food at a very affordable price.
