A Big Island Gathering Spot

Situated in the heart of Hilo, Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill serves as a reliable anchor for locals craving a balance between elevated comfort food and island freshness. The dining room buzzes with a high-energy hum, filled with the clatter of silverware and the warm, welcoming chatter of Hilo residents. It is the kind of place where shorts and slippers feel perfectly at home, yet the presentation suggests a more refined kitchen hand.

Pacific-Inspired Specialties

The menu leans heavily into the abundance of the Big Island, with a particular focus on fresh catch. Chef David 'Jackie' Reardon’s vision for the grill centers on consistent, high-quality seafood. Guests frequently gravitate toward the furikake-crusted fresh catch, which arrives perfectly seared with a crisp exterior that gives way to tender, flaky white fish. The signature macadamia nut-crusted fish is another standout, pairing the richness of local nuts with a delicate citrus butter sauce that cuts through the salt.

The Hilo Dining Experience

Walking through the doors, you are met with the scent of searing garlic and charred ginger. The interior is unpretentious, prioritizing functionality and flow. Be prepared for a lively, sometimes loud environment during peak dinner hours—a direct result of its popularity among neighborhood families and groups celebrating special milestones. While the parking lot can get tight as the sun sets over Hilo Bay, the staff maintains a steady, efficient pace that keeps the wait times manageable. Whether you are grabbing a quick cocktail at the bar or settling in for a full meal, it captures the genuine, no-fuss spirit of Hawaii Island dining.

Went here for NYE and ordered nearly everything off their menu. Highlights were the Ahi Tuna Tartare appetizer and the Fresh Catch and Ahi & Coconut Shrimp mains. All of the food was well prepared but not outstanding. Ambiance was quite loud and it was hard to talk and service is very slow, though this may have been impacted by the holidays. We had a lot of better food in Hilo, so personally I’d recommend looking elsewhere.

Delicious food and great service. Travelling from Aus to Hawaii and spent the day travelling from Kona past the volcanoes national park around to Hilo. We had no idea where to eat in Hilo and what was the go to, but stumbled across this gem. The atmosphere is great with the restaurant taking up residence in what was the first bank in Hilo. We had the burger, fish and chips and the chicken tacos. All too notch! Would recommend. There were 4 of us and it was very well priced. 2 adult drinks, garlic bread, 3 meals and a bowl of chips was only $30 US per person. So good.

Lovely finer dining restaurant. The staff was so genuine and helpful. Our server was so nice. We got the steak and added on the lobster which you can do on saturdays. It was a birthday dinner, so that’s why it was nice to have the option. The crispy smashed potatoes and sauce on the steak were wonderful additions to the plate. Food took a while to come out but it was a weekend evening to be fair. Even a complimentary birthday cake plate came out, with a decadent moist German chocolate cake and mac nut icing. If you like a place with a lot of options on the menu, this isn’t the place for you.

We had such an amazing lunch here. My husband said he wasn’t even hungry but he couldn’t resist eating everything :) we had the fish Onu plate with mushrooms and miso, purple cabbage. The kids had local beef burger and chicken with vegetables, also very good. We finished with a very exquisite dessertc chocolate cake with coconut frosting and vanilla ice creme, such a perfect balance of flavors.

Great food, especially the appetizers which are large! Food portions also large so watch how much you order. The happy hour menu is outstanding if you eat early.

We went there for lunch. The food is very nice as well as the service. We ordered pork spring rolls as appetizer, it’s amazing. We also had poke bowls, crab cake and fresh caught fish grill. They are all fresh and tasty.

I had a fantastic dining experience at Jackie Rey’s Hilo, located in the historic part of Hilo and just a short distance from the waterfront! From the moment we walked in, the ambiance struck a wonderful balance between elegance and comfort, creating a refined dining atmosphere without any stuffiness. It is in an old bank and vault remains. The cocktails were a highlight—creative and delicious, each one perfectly complementing our meal. I ordered the steak, which was incredible and perfectly prepared to my liking; it was tender and packed with flavor. The salads were also fantastic, fresh and vibrant, showcasing high-quality ingredients. The burgers that went by us looking amazing! The quality of the food was exceptional, and I was pleasantly surprised by the great prices for such high standards. The service was top-notch, with attentive staff who made us feel welcomed and valued throughout our visit. Plus, street parking was easy to find. I highly recommend Jackie Rey’s Hilo for anyone looking for a memorable meal in a beautiful setting!
