Hilo Pizza Company
About
Hand-Tossed Perfection in the Heart of Hilo
Stepping into Hilo Pizza Company feels like discovering a local secret tucked away in the vibrant streets of downtown Hilo. The air is heavy with the intoxicating scent of blistered dough and wood smoke, a byproduct of their signature high-heat oven. Unlike the typical tourist-heavy spots, this establishment draws a crowd of island residents who appreciate a no-frills, authentic approach to pizza.
The Art of the Crust
The menu centers on a crust that hits the perfect balance: thin and crispy on the edges with a chewy center that holds up under generous layers of fresh toppings. Their local-style pizzas often feature island-grown produce, giving each pie a flavor profile you won't find on the mainland. Whether you are craving a classic pepperoni that curls into salty cups under the flame or a specialty veggie pie loaded with fresh greens, the execution is consistently precise.
Dining in the Big Island Heat
The space keeps things casual and straightforward, emphasizing the food over decorative flourishes. It’s an ideal spot for a quick lunch during a break from exploring Hilo Bay or a laid-back dinner with friends after a long day. Be prepared for a bit of a localized rhythm—service here follows the relaxed 'island time' pace rather than a rushed urban sprint. Parking in the surrounding blocks can get a bit tight during peak dinner hours, but the crisp, charred flavor of the pizza makes navigating the downtown lots well worth the effort. Expect the sound of clinking glasses, local chatter, and the soft pop of bubbles on crusts rising in the oven.

Excellent pizza. Highly recommended for families or small groups, less than 6 people. Wonderful welcome, kind service.

Go with the Italian pizza. You will not regret it. We did 50/50 Italian and also pepperoni only because the Italian is very different in the ingredients and I wasn't sure I would love it. Wrong! Loved it! We will be back next time we are in Hilo. We sat outside and the pizza was speedy.

Best calzones this side of the Pacific! 😂 I highly recommend the Italian Special, if you want some good italian meats wrapped in a big cheesy pocket, dripping with deliciousness! That's definitely my style. Also, the closest thing to pizza-by-the-slice, as served in the Santa Cruz tradition (Pizza My Heart, Pleasure Pizza). This place reminds me of home, and of being italian. Definitely one of my favorite stops for a quick slice. Right now stopping by for my regular beer and meal before hopping on a flight back to the mainland. Highly recommended! Friendly staff, not too formal, and always with the local college sports teams playing on the TV. Aloha!

Still my favorite pizza spot in town. Last time they were out of jalapenos for the only type of pizza I've eaten for over 30 years (Pepperoni, jalapeno, pineapple) and they ran to the store to get some, aboute and beyond and definitely appreciated! My picky son usually doesn't eat the crust and he ate 2 whole pieces. Definitely my go to. Try the chili water!

We were looking for a pizza place for dinner in Hilo and were so happy to have ended up at Hilo Pizza Co. 🍕 The owner, Tom, is super friendly and made us feel very welcome 😊. The pizza was absolutely delicious — thin, crispy crust, loaded with plenty of fresh toppings 🍅🧀 We loved that we could get two different types on one big 18-inch pizza, which made us extra happy 😋. Don’t miss trying their homemade Pink Sauce — it’s creamy, garlicky, and just amazing if you love garlic 🧄💗. We’d definitely go again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Hilo! 🌺🙌

My first visit here and I really liked this place. The staff were super friendly and welcoming and I loved the atmosphere. It’s small but quant. I really want to give the pizza a higher rating because it really has so much potential, but the lack of ingredients added to the pizza were so few. We ordered a simple cheese and pepperoni pizza and it really lacked toppings. Luckily we had plenty of Parmesan at the table to add on. The crust was really good which is why I said this has so much potential to be a really good pizza. Please add more toppings. This will make that pizza so much better.

Came back and tried it again and ordered double mushrooms, but still there was hardly any toppings. Super cheap. I also ordered a Caesar salad but they didn’t even mix it when you’re eating in the restaurant they should mix the Caesar salad. Instead, they gave it like it’s a to go order and the lettuce was , warm and wilted. Definitely not worth nine dollars. Definitely will not order again. I have to take it down a Because there’s no improvement even though there’s new ownership. Previous review. I ordered a large pizza with olives, mushrooms and purple onions, and there was hardly any toppings whatsoever. You have to pay extra for these toppings and they don’t put hardly any on. Total rip off. But the crust is really great. I don’t know if it was because it was a delivery order or I don’t know just seems really cheap on the toppings.

Two choices on sizes. Kid size or humongous. Just order the big one and have leftovers. The vegan cheese is very good. They can use it on any of the pizzas making this great for dairy free people. The kids loved their pepperoni and gobbled it down. The crust is well made but I feel like if they could make them slightly smaller it would make for a crisper crust in the middle instead of slightly doughy.

Best pizza as far as authenticity I've had on this island so far. Hands down great pizza and leans more toward Italian-made. The toppings reflect the way they make them in Italy. Definitely used to more toppings but you cannot beat it as far as quality ingredients goes. The interior is also really thoughtful but not over the top. The staff was excellent even with only 2 employees and they had customers while i was there. Both staff members were extremely polite and hospitable the speed of service was also pretty quick. The price isn't too bad and they have affordable options. If I was to say a few things I'd do differently is adding other specialty drinks other than soft drinks and beer. The menu board was really nice maybe having pictures of the items might help people better decide. Also the first thing I noticed was there was not pasta but they do specialize in pizza. I haven't tried everything yet but I will definitely be adding more things from the menu to my list of things to try next.
