Hilo Lunch Shop
About
A Taste of Local Tradition
Stepping into Hilo Lunch Shop feels like a quiet walk back through the town's history. Located right in the heart of the Big Island's coastal hub, this spot serves as a daily ritual for locals grabbing a reliable, no-frills meal before heading back to work or out to the Hamakua Coast. The scent of seasoned rice and slow-cooked proteins greets you the moment you slide the door open.
The Plate Lunch Experience
This is the place to experience a true Hawaiian-style plate lunch. The menu rotates with a comforting predictability, featuring staples like crispy chicken katsu, tender shoyu pork, and the ever-popular kalua pig that pulls apart with the slightest touch of a fork. The portions are substantial, packed tightly into foam containers that hold the heat of the food— the working-person’s appetite. The mac salad here strikes that difficult balance of creamy and tangy, making it the essential anchor for any plate you choose.
What to Expect
Don't come looking for white tablecloths or ambient jazz. The environment is utilitarian and fast-paced, reflecting the authentic rhythm of downtown Hilo life. You might find a slight line during the peak noon hour, and parking in the surrounding blocks can be a bit of a shuffle, but the service remains brisk and friendly. It is the perfect stop for those who value substance over spectacle, offering a genuine slice of island food culture that stays true to its roots. Whether you are a resident needing a quick weekday lunch or a visitor looking for the spot where the locals actually eat, this kitchen delivers honest food without the fuss.

Great local take out spot. Waited in line and took our food to a park 3 minutes away. Chicken and max salad were great. As was the cucumber kimchi.

We didn't get there till 1230, so a lot of stuff was out. I had heard about the fishcakes and sushi but they were sold out already. I will try to get there earlier next time. We took our food to a nearby park to eat. There's no seating, but part of enjoying okazu is taking it with you to a great location and enjoying it all.

I must be perfectly honest with everyone. I've been inside Hilo Lunch Shop but i have not eaten their food. However, if you like local food, you'll love this place. I've, never heard a negative thing about this place except they might run out of certain favorites if you don't get there early enough. My fiance was picking up food for her work and I went with her. There was a long line which moved quickly. I observed those waiting in line as well as the staff. EVERYBODY in the establishment were upbeat and there was just a positive vibe flowing throughout. I could tell the customers were eagerly anticipating and being excited about getting there favorite dishes. Totally cool vibe in there. Im going back to get what I missed out on. Check it out

The food here is OK. Nothing to write home about. UPDATE: 5.24.24 got food from here today with the hopes of it being better from the last time BUT What a disappointment it was. The sweet potato tempura was hard and crunchy, it was cooked just enough for then batter to be fried up but the potato was raw🫤 The hash patties were burnt so i scraped off the burnt parts, their meat jun has no taste. Why do you even charge so much for food that isn't made with QUALITY anymore. Once upon a time, places like these were good, now even that like everything else here are a thing of the past. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. Never going here again

This place is a local favorite. It’s like a deli customized with Hawaii’s Japanese favorite foods(Okazuya style). A lot of people get a meal or a quick bite to eat because the prices are so affordable versus a traditional restaurant. The food is made daily hot and fresh. And just to note, there’s a minimal amount of seating. So take out is recommended. There’s lots of free parking, and you might want to Google map this place because it’s on a side street.
