Don's Grill
About
A Hilo Institution for Breakfast and Beyond
Stepping into Don's Grill feels like walking into a slice of authentic Hilo history. This spot has long served as a gathering point for locals craving unpretentious, hearty comfort food. It isn't a place for white tablecloths or quiet corners; instead, expect the energetic hum of regulars catching up over coffee and the clatter of plates moving quickly from the kitchen.
The Flavors of Home
The menu leans heavily into local island staples. If you visit early, the loco moco is the defining dish—a massive heap of rice, a juicy patty, and rich gravy that serves as a masterclass in Hilo-style comfort. It is the kind of meal that demands a slow pace and plenty of napkins. For those stopping by later in the day, the diverse range of sandwiches and classic grill fare ensures there is something for everyone, whether you are fueling up before a hike toward Volcano or looking for a reliable lunch spot near the bayfront.
Practical Notes for Your Visit
The space carries a certain nostalgic character, with interiors that prioritize function over modern design trends. It is worth noting that the parking lot can get remarkably tight during the peak lunch rush, and the acoustics mean you will likely hear your neighbor’s conversation as clearly as your own. These quirks are simply part of the charm that keeps people coming back. It is the perfect destination for travelers who want to bypass the tourist hubs and eat where the residents of East Hawaii actually spend their weekends. Whether you are grabbing a quick breakfast or settling in for a relaxed lunch, the service remains brisk, friendly, and fundamentally rooted in Hilo hospitality.

I had such an amazing time here. The food tasted just like a homemade meal and the portions were huge, which is always a plus. Everyone working there was super friendly and made me feel right at home the moment I walked in. I honestly cannot wait to come back for another bite soon because this is exactly the kind of spot I love finding on my travels.

Solid spot! We always make it a point to stop here when in Hilo. The mixed plate never disappoints—nothing fancy, just done right and full of flavor. The staff is always warm and welcoming, which makes every visit even more enjoyable.

I ordered rotisserie chicken, vegetables and corn chowder/soup. The chicken was you basic, over baked, dry chicken. In no way was it rotisserie! The vegetables were mixed peas, corn and carrots like from a school lunch plate. The soup was ok. I would not recommend coming here to dine. My meal was about $20 and it was not much of any better than a school lunch, just a larger portion. My husband selected this restaurant and I assure you if we're ever back in Hilo we will definitely not be dining here. Portions are large, but no one in my family ate more than half of our meal. We all ate after arriving back at our condo.

Don’s Grill is my go-to spot whenever I’m craving a delicious meal! The bacon cheeseburger is absolutely fantastic—juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked with crispy bacon that takes it to the next level. What I love most is their all-day breakfast menu, so I can enjoy my favorite breakfast dishes no matter what time I stop by. The atmosphere is friendly, the staff is welcoming, and the food always hits the mark. If you are looking for a place with great burgers and breakfast options around the clock, Don’s Grill is definitely worth a visit!

We've been wanting to check out this great family style restaurant in Hilo for some time and it did not disappoint! Oh my gosh, amazing lasagna and we also had the fresh ono and the sample platter. Everything was done homestyle and was delicious. The food came out of the kitchen superfast and the staff was very friendly. Overall, this place is a winner for a nice sit-down family dinner

When we arrived, the parking lot was completely full, signaling a bustling restaurant. Initially, our social anxiety made us hesitant due to the crowd, but we decided to brave it given the evident popularity of the place. Fortunately, we were seated immediately despite the crowd. The restaurant was not only busy but also highly efficient, especially with their circular seating arrangement for customers. We received prompt service. The menu was extensive, perhaps overly so. I generally prefer a more concise menu as it often reflects a dedication to quality. We ordered the Conquest sandwich, which includes roast beef, grilled onions, cheese, and sauce, and the French dip as well. While waiting, we appreciated a timely refill of our water. Our food was served in just 10 minutes, a pleasantly quick service. Both the au jus sauce and the French dip were outstanding. The Conquest sandwich was impressively large, packed with tender, well-seasoned meat. We would definitely order both sandwiches again.

This is a great Diner style of eating. Very clean and wonderfully fresh food. You wait outside the door to be seated and sanitizer is provided to sanitize your hands upon entry. The waiter/waitress are all friendly and efficient. The food came out quickly and the drinks were constantly refilled. The side salad was not permanent and wrapped, they put it together when it was ordered. All fresh ingredients. The price is one of the best in the area and you get a plateful of food. I would be a regular to this place.
