About
A Taste of Home in the Heart of Hilo
Walking into Crazy Grandmaz feels less like stepping into a restaurant and more like visiting a relative who insists you haven't eaten enough. Located in the bustling landscape of Hilo, this local favorite serves as a reliable go-to for residents craving no-nonsense, hearty Hawaiian comfort food. The air inside is thick with the savory scent of slow-cooked proteins and the clatter of plates, creating a casual, high-energy environment that doesn't care much for pretense.
What’s on the Menu
The kitchen leans heavily into traditional island flavors. If you are looking for local staples, the loco moco here is a heavy-hitter, featuring a thick, hand-pressed patty smothered in rich, dark gravy that hits just the right notes. Portions are notoriously generous, designed to satisfy appetites after a long morning of exploring the nearby waterfalls or rainy Hilo streets. Their menu cycles through various plate lunch classics, often spotlighting fresh catches and perfectly seasoned kalua pork that falls apart at the touch of a fork.
The Hilo Vibe
Don't expect white tablecloths or quiet corners. The acoustics reflect the lively chatter of Hilo regulars, and during peak hours, you might find yourself navigating a packed floor or waiting for a table to clear. It is the kind of spot where service is efficient rather than doting, perfectly suited for those who prioritize a solid, filling meal over a curated fine-dining performance. Keep in mind that the parking situation near this downtown Hilo gem can get tricky when the lunch rush hits, so plan accordingly to avoid a trek.
Whether you are a visitor trying to eat like a local or a neighbor looking for a reliable, flavor-packed lunch, Crazy Grandmaz delivers consistent results without the fuss.

We had a great night at crazy grandmaz. Someone may have spiked one of my 12 naty lights though. I felt comfortable and okay being vulnerable. Mahalo.

The place smelled stale and off-putting, the music was barely audible, and the atmosphere was tense. One of the so-called 'regulars’ told me they wanted to “drop me” just because I showed up with someone they apparently liked. After literally being by threatened and insulted, I was told I wasn’t welcome back, even though all I did was mind my business and spend money. The vibe is bitter, cliquey, and completely unfair—definitely not worth the time or money. If you’re looking for a good time pick literally anywhere else😭😭

Fun place if you can get a seat. Which is rare... Under staffed though so the waitress and bar tender are working over time and seem stressed usually. Karaoke is kinda weird as well ...

Very local spot, with occasional handfuls of silly college and post college shenanigans. Service and drinks aren't too shabby, pupus are decent, karaoke is ON POINT if you're going for the classics. Waitresses are sassy and fun, tip them well!

Mellow, no drama, and friendly service from bartender and waitress. Dollar karaoke songs with no judgement! Mostly for the crowd that just wants to hang out and talk story... Oh, and 2 dartboard's. Have fun, drink, be mellow 'cause this is the place to just kick back. Small parking lot, so plan on carpooling and having a Designated driver.

It was awesome the bartender didn't know what a whiskey ginger is. A barfly told us they don't have ginger ale. Despite the massive screen tv's and false ceilings this is a great contemporary dive. Plus the barkeep was sweet.
