A Relaxed Slice of Hilo Life

Stepping into Coconut Grill, you immediately notice the unpretentious, open-air feeling that defines local dining in Hilo. This isn’t a place for white tablecloths or hushed tones; it’s where the sound of plastic forks hitting styrofoam or ceramic plates competes with the hum of ceiling fans and casual conversation from nearby tables.

Island Comforts on the Plate

The menu leans heavily into the comfort foods that residents of East Hawaii crave. You will find classic local staples, including generous portions of loco moco topped with rich gravy and perfectly fried eggs. The grill is perhaps best known for its casual, no-fuss approach to breakfast and lunch, making it a go-to spot for those looking to fuel up before a day of exploring the nearby waterfalls or the rugged coastline of the Big Island.

While the menu is expansive, the daily specials often highlight whatever is fresh and available in the Hilo region. It’s the kind of place where you come for a hearty meal without the pretension of tourist-centric hotspots. You might find the pace of service fluctuating depending on the time of day, but that is part of the charm of a neighborhood institution.

Plan Your Visit

If you are exploring the streets near the Hilo bayfront, this grill offers a grounded culinary perspective of the town. Keep in mind that parking in this part of Hilo can get tight during peak lunch hours, so arrive with a bit of patience. It’s a genuine spot to sit down, grab a plate, and eat like a local while taking in the humid, tropical breeze that rolls off the Pacific.

They have a limited menu from 2-5 pm. They do not accept Amex and the beer was not cold. From the limited menu the food I chose was good.

I got the chicken, bacon, ranch sandwich. The chicken had super thick breading on it that was burned. I had to take it apart to eat it. The bun was really good though. My husband liked the chicken katsu that he had. The place was really dusty. The ceiling fans were covered in noticeable dust and the back room they don't use was all dusty. Not sure I want to eat there again even though its right near the hotel we're staying at.

We had the Kama'anai eggs Benedict and the Lilikoi French toast with a side of Portuguese sausage. It was one of the best breakfasts we've had on the island. Service was great too. Highly recommend this place.

I got the grizzling steak and it’s actually grizzling! Pretty good experience for the buck, and it’s close to the hotels. Very good spot for a fast breakfast before the national park visit.

Absolutely love Coconut Grill. We had the fresh fish of the day, and it was incredible. Served on skewers cleverly placed in a slice of grilled pineapple, and complimented with the most delicious curvy fries. Top that off with delicious Mai Tais, and the service was incredible, and filled with Aloha. You absolutely have to visit!!

I finally returned to Coconut grill after a extended amount of time. Let me tell you it was worth the wait! I could tell by the menu immediately the food would be a million times better. Finally using quality ingredients and extremely well prepared plates! The food was amazing and I was extremely impressed by the food and the service! We came here during Merrie Monarch and surprisingly there was no wait. They had live entertainment outside it was a magical experience to say the least. I wouldn't mind coming back anytime.

Was reading reviews for a quick lunch/dinner before catching our flight back to Oahu. They did not disappoint. Fish nachos, BBQ sliders, and fish Tikis. Service was great. If you are ever in Helo, stop in here for some good food

I brought my mom here on Mothers Day. The waitress was great. The food was another story. At first glance I thought it would be good. I ordered the rib eye tips, they were flavorless. There was barely any meat on the plate & about 5 pieces of that small amount was pieces of fat. My mom ordered the coconut shrimp plate. When it came out it wasn't hot. Both her rice & my rice was hard. Then there was a hard undercooked carrot & hard undercooked broccoli on her plate. I ate here a few years ago & it was great. The plate came out with steam & was delicious. We were so disappointed with the quality this time we decided to refuse our plates & eat elsewhere. For the price of the food we were shocked at how bad the meal was. If you enlarge the steak plate I drew Arrows to show the fat pieces that should have been steak. Also the pale tomatoes, they are supposed to be red. Highly disappointed. :(

Soooo good. We stopped here on the way to the volcano site. We had the creme brulee french toast, the CBP pancakes and the traditional eggs Benedict. We all devoured our meals. The service was great and friendly since the moment we walked in. Great family environment with a great view of water. We even saw turtles! Would definitely come back.
