Blane's Drive Inn (150 Wiwoole St)
About
A Slice of Hilo Comfort
If you find yourself navigating the streets near the Hilo hospital complex, the aroma of sizzling meat hitting a flat-top grill is usually your cue that you have arrived at Blane's Drive Inn. This is not a place for white tablecloths or reservations; it is a quintessential Hilo institution built for those who prioritize a satisfying, no-nonsense meal over aesthetic perfection.
The Classic Drive-In Experience
Stepping up to the service window, you are immediately greeted by the rhythmic sounds of a busy kitchen and the steady hum of local traffic. The menu leans heavily into Hawaii's comfort food staples. Their loco moco is a local favorite, featuring a hearty patty tucked under a fried egg and generous ladles of gravy that define the island's mid-day refueling ritual. For those looking for something lighter but still substantial, the teriyaki beef and fresh-catch specials highlight the kitchen's commitment to traditional island flavors.
Local Nuances
One thing to keep in mind is the parking configuration, which can get a bit tight during the peak lunch rush when residents and hospital staff alike crowd the lot for a quick bite. It is part of the charm—the close proximity keeps the energy lively and ensures you are never sitting in silence. Whether you are grabbing a quick box lunch to eat by the bay or settling in for a casual afternoon snack, the service remains quick and focused on getting you a hot meal without unnecessary frills. It is exactly the type of spot where the food does the talking, making it a reliable waypoint for anyone seeking an authentic Hilo dining experience.

The place needs to be CLEANED!!! The seats are dirty, the outdoor eating area is so dull, unkept and uninviting. I paid $16 for a shrimp combo and only got 3 small shrimp over white, bland sticky rice!! The service was very slow and the sides are bland and a waste of money. I do not suggest that you spend your money here .

What was once a wonderful place to eat is now absolutely terrible i understand there’s only One cook and i understand that it can be overwhelming but if a person asks for something on the side make it on the side! I ordered a burger it was for my mom I got a side of bacon the lady PUT THE BACON IN MY BURGER! The younger girl who was cashiering and assisting the cook asks me if I wanted the bacon on the side I said yes please . the older cook woman rolls her eyes and tells her to grab a little paper container. I wait for almost 25 minutes for a burger and UNDERCOOKED BACON COVERD IN CHEESE. I was planning on giving my mom some bacon for the burger and the other pieces of bacon were for me I can’t eat it now because IM ALLERGIC TO CHEESE!!!!!!!!! IMAGINE PAYING $13 for BACON which is UNDER COOKED and this happens ON YOUR BIRTHDAY absolutely disgusting I loved it here as a kid I’m so disappointed on what it’s become

Loved Blane’s. Husband and I stopped spontaneously on way out of town for breakfast. Super nice staff, great diner style breakfast. I got banana pancake special, great size portion for price. Husband got some sort of breakfast combo and liked the gravy that was included. The lady who took our order was sweet and funny and took great care of us. Would recommend to anyone looking for a quick, quality bite to eat.

Simple, no frills, local diner, and 1.86 non-frufru coffee. Bacon Eggs Over Easy was a treat, with more than enough bacon and rice to satisfy this 5"9' frame. 🥓 Bacon, about 5 strips, was cooked perfectly on 2 scoops of George Washington hair-do shaped rice, yes not like some diners that gives you scoops of small ping pong balls for rice. Over easy eggs 🥚 🥚 x2 was big enough to smother all the rice after plugging my fork into its yoke. Picture says a thousands words, see my pic. Best thing over all is that this plate and coffee was under 10 bucks! My new go to wen in hilo.

Blane’s is pretty good food with pretty good prices! No, they’re not gonna win any personality contests but it’s a drive-in, not Ruth Chris Steak House (><) If you want (fairly) fast local food at a decent price, Blane’s fits the bill.
