About
A Taste of Home in the Heart of Hilo
When you find yourself navigating the winding roads of Hilo, you eventually realize that the best meals aren't found in polished dining rooms, but in the unassuming spots where the steam from the kitchen tells the whole story. Aunty Yong's Place captures that spirit perfectly. It is the kind of neighborhood joint where the chatter of regulars competes with the sizzle of the flat-top grill, creating an acoustic backdrop of genuine island life.
The Flavors of East Hawaii
The kitchen here focuses on the kind of soul-satisfying comfort food that defines Big Island cooking. You will find generous portions of slow-cooked meats, crispy fried proteins, and sides that highlight local produce. The signature dishes lean heavily into traditional Hawaiian-style plate lunches, favoring bold savory profiles over delicate presentation. Expect to smell the fragrant ginger and garlic wafting toward the entrance before you even step through the door.
A Local Landmark
This establishment functions as a communal hub for Hilo locals. It is a fantastic stop if you are looking to escape the tourist trail and eat exactly how the residents eat. Be prepared for a modest, no-frills setting—the space is compact, and during the peak lunch hour, finding a seat can be a bit of a dance. If you are the type who appreciates a quick, hearty meal served with a side of authentic local personality, this is your spot. Just remember to bring your patience on busy days, as the popularity of their rotating daily specials can lead to a queue that spills toward the sidewalk, a surefire sign of quality in this part of town.

Nice little karaoke bar. Definitely a good spot. And bonus- I didn't feel like I'd be stabbed there at any second. Honestly, the server was super nice and was super fast with our drinks and the mic when it was our tables turn to jam.

The beer is relatively cheap but the bartender was not very friendly. There are other bars nearby like Cronies and Hilo town tavern that we’re better.

I love this place. It's below street level, so you enter the front door and immediately walk down a flight of stairs. It is a large open room with booths that can be shared, or blocked off for privacy. Karaoke, fair priced standard pupu's, friendly staff. Local hospitality industry peoples often gather here for pau hana after closing their respective dining/drinking establishment. Usually a pretty mellow crowd. Aunty Yong is a real person, she still puts in work, and won't hesitate to call people out when they're acting foolish!
