A Taste of Hilo Tradition

If you find yourself wandering through Hilo, you have likely caught the scent of grilled meats drifting through the breeze near the heart of town. Asami's Kitchen stands as a reliable pillar for those seeking the kind of comfort food that defines Big Island culture. This isn't a place for white-tablecloth service; it is a no-frills, counter-service spot that prioritizes hearty portions over ceremony.

The Plate Lunch Standard

The menu leans heavily into the local favorites that locals rely on for a solid workday lunch. Their teriyaki chicken is the clear standout—charred just enough to capture that smoky profile, then glazed in a sweet, savory sauce that demands an extra scoop of rice. You will also find the traditional staples like macaroni salad, which carries the exact creamy consistency Hilo residents expect. It is the perfect stop for beach-goers or workers needing a quick, satisfying meal before heading back out to the coast.

Local Vibe and Quirks

Stepping into Asami's, you are met with the hum of a bustling kitchen and the chatter of regulars who have been coming here for years. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge when it comes to parking during the busy lunch rush; the spaces fill up fast, reflecting the popularity of the kitchen among the local crowd. It is loud, it is fast, and it smells like home-cooked island comfort. If you want to experience Hilo the way residents do, grab a box to go and head toward the nearby bayfront to eat while watching the tide roll in.

Breakfast/lunch spot. Kawamoto was closed so we found this place nearby. I'm glad that we discovered this place as well. Since it was our first time, I asked the server to pick whatever for us and she took her time and listed each item and explained what it was. We went later in the day so it wasn't as fresh but still very delicious.

Local family. Opens at 6 am. Normally peaople waiting @ 6, for very good reasons. Serves fresh made food that is possibly the best quality, best price hot breakfast in Hilo - ONLY TO GO. This place is slammed from six oclock on, they either close at 1 or when they run out of food, whatever comes first. -- Many local Hawaiian folks who work hard and need to eat well, kick off here with a great to go. Take it and eat on the bay. -- Eat by the peace, build your breakfast. Consistently my favorite breakfast place in Hilo to go.!!! ;) Enjoy J

I got here at 630 in the morning. It’s where all the locals are picking up both breakfast as well as their lunches for later. I asked them to make surprise me and put together a bento that would travel well on the plane. It did not disappoint! I was the luckiest person on my flight back to the mainland. What a treat. It’s great to see these places these old Hilo establishments still being an important part of the community.
