A Taste of Thailand in the Heart of Hilo

Stepping into Aloydee's Thai Food feels less like walking into a commercial space and more like being invited into a local kitchen where the priority is balance, heat, and freshness. Located right in the hub of downtown Hilo, this spot has built a loyal following among Big Island residents who crave authentic, no-nonsense Thai flavors.

The Flavor Profile

The menu leans heavily into traditional staples, with the Pad Thai and Green Curry serving as the primary pillars of their reputation. You can expect the distinct aroma of lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves to hit you the moment the kitchen doors swing open. Their curries are made with a depth of coconut milk that avoids the cloying sweetness found in mass-market chains, favoring instead a sharp, spicy finish that lingers just long enough to demand another bite.

What to Expect

This is a casual, quick-service environment perfect for a midday lunch break or a relaxed takeout dinner before heading to the Hilo bayfront. Because it operates within the energetic pulse of the town, it can get busy during peak hours, and the seating is functional rather than luxurious. Don't be surprised if you have to hunt for a spot to park on the street during the lunch rush—it is a common Hilo reality. The acoustic environment is lively, often filled with the rhythmic sound of a mortar and pestle preparing fresh som tum (papaya salad) to order. It’s an unpretentious, straightforward experience that hits the mark for anyone seeking genuine island-style Thai comfort food.

Hidden gem with the best authentic Thai food on the Big Island. Imagine having a Thai grandma custom make you everything and this is it! For real. Don’t let the ambiance of this small food court shape your opinions, let your taste buds explode. They take cash and card, and everything is made with care.

Bring cash. We had chicken pad Thai and some avocado spring rolls. Great meal, definitely worth the stop.

This is our second time eating here. We had to come back after enjoying the delicious fried rice last year. The food is prepared very fresh. Lots of flavor. Basil fried rice is our favorite!

This is a hole in the wall place but it has amazing food. Don’t be fooled by the pictures, the food tastes good and is one of the best Thai food that we have had.

How did this place get such high reviews? The papaya salad was bland. Even after asking for extra fish sauce. The Tom kha was a medley of random veggies - purple cabbage, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, green beans. The chicken tasted stale. Flavor was completely off . I threw it away after a few sips. The kitchen didn’t have any stove, just a bunch of electric pots - these should have been a clue that food isn’t authentic.

A great counter-serve place to grab some lunch after stopping by the farmer's market. Food always comes served hot and fresh, with great flavor. Always love myself a zingy plate of curry noodles--I recommend to ask for spice! Reasonable prices compared with many Hilo places serving the same cuisine. Can have a few minutes' wait at busy hours, but is well-worth it...Enjoy the murals and artwork in the shared dining area. 🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

We have been enjoying food from Aloydee’s Thai Food for many many years. This is one of our favorite take out lunch spots. At times we would eat here multiple times a week. It’s right next door to the Hilo Farmer’s Market. One of the most underrated, off the beaten path lunch spots. We usually take out, but there are also limited shared seating in a common area used by other little food spots in the area. She has an amazing menu and everything always tastes so ‘ono (delicious). She has all kinds of noodles, curries, fried rice, papaya salad, summer rolls, Thai tea and veggie dishes. I’ve never had anything on her menu that I didn’t like. My young children also love her food and will even request to eat there. Some of our favorites: Pad Thai Yellow Curry Green Curry Curry Noodles Drunken Noodles Lots of people LOVE her summer rolls and green papaya salad. You can get the spice level as you prefer. You can call in your order ahead of time and have it ready for pick up, but only if you are certain you will pick up as she is a small business that could not eat the costs of no shows for food already cooked as she prepares everything fresh. Wait time is usually around 15-20 minutes, sometimes little bit longer if it’s rush hour, but always worth it.

Pineapple fried rice was absolutely delicious. It feels and tastes homemade. Portions are small but filling. Much cheaper than some other places nearby. (cash only fyi). Weird cafe seating but I'm not complaining.
