A True Taste of Kona Roots

Perched along the rugged slopes of the South Kona district, Menehune Coffee Company serves as a functional landmark for those traversing the Mamalahoa Highway. This isn't your typical polished tourist cafe; it feels like the living room of the coffee belt. When you pull in, the first thing that hits you is the deep, earthy aroma of roasting beans—a scent that lingers long after you’ve left the gravel lot.

The Soul of the South Kona Coffee Belt

The operation is deeply tied to the land, prioritizing 100% Kona coffee sourced directly from the local orchards surrounding Captain Cook. Watching the baristas work behind the counter is a lesson in patience and precision. Their signature pour-overs extract bright, citrus-forward notes from the beans, while the cold brew offers a smooth, chocolatey finish that cuts through the midday humidity of the Big Island.

Coffee for the Road

This spot is ideal for early risers heading south toward the snorkeling beaches or commuters looking for a legitimate caffeine kick. Expect a rustic aesthetic defined by weathered wood and wide-open windows that invite the cool mountain breeze to circulate. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge when pulling back onto the main highway—the local traffic can be persistent, and the turn requires a bit of island-style patience.

If you find yourself wandering through this historic coffee-growing region, stopping here is less about a quick transaction and more about connecting with the local agricultural history. Whether you are grabbing a bag of fresh roast to take home or just need a solid cup to navigate the winding roads of West Hawaii, this is a essential stop for those who value origin over convenience.

I loved stopping by this spot for a morning pick-me-up. The coffee was smooth and tasted really fresh, and the vibe inside was super relaxed and perfect for just hanging out for a bit. It’s a great little place to start your day if you appreciate a good cup of joe in a friendly atmosphere.

Coffee Savior in the morning. One look at the photo and you know what I think! I was so immersed in my coffee my other purchases were left on the counter but my server dashed out to make sure I would not miss the flavor fanticy I was about to engage in the calmness of their environment!

We really liked our food. Plenty of indoor seating with a few tables outside. Great beverages. Pretty slow service. Also there was a dog roaming around the restaurant which I felt was a bit gross for a restaurant

My husband and I were on our way to Volcano National Park and wanted to stop for a coffee and a quick on the go breakfast! We ordered the breakfast burrito and it was AMAZING! The pork was top notch. We both agreed that we don’t think we’ve ever had a better breakfast burrito! Definitely recommend for a quick bite and amazing vibes!

The owners here need to recognize their employee Leina who "rescued" what was a chaotic situation during breakfast. She was pleasant, remained calm and still had a smile. She should be considered for a managerial position. Food was good, coffee was good. Stock of coffee was barely there but it was bc a new location had recently opened. Leina said her commitment was to get restocked and have coffee back on the shelves. Good luck to the new location but we wanted to come here, the original location as we had visited before.

Excellent coffee and food and very friendly service! We came here three days in a row while staying nearby and had dine-in hot breakfast as well as takeout. The fresh catch benedict, breakfast burrito with pork, and banana & lilikoi muffins were highlights but everything we had was really good, as was the coffee (of course!). My partner loved the cinnamon roll latte and I had a great French press and cold brew. We also did the coffee mill tour on our last morning and it was interesting and included a coffee tasting of different roasts and preparations, I'm glad we were able to get that in.

We stopped by here one morning on the way to start a road trip. I would recommend this place because it is all local coffee from their coffee farm. Also, their prices are nice and they open the earliest. The lady at the counter was very nice and the coffee was good. The food looked bomb but we were too early for the kitchen.

Great Breakfast Stop on the Way to Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach We stopped in around 9am on a Friday and were pleasantly surprised to find it not too busy. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was friendly and attentive. We shared the Florentine Benedicts with house potatoes — beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and well-balanced. We also tried the Biscuits and Gravy — the biscuits had a slight sweetness, which wasn’t quite my thing, but the gravy and sausage were excellent. Overall, it's a perfect spot to sit down, enjoy a quality breakfast, and sip on some good coffee before heading out to explore the island. Definitely recommend this as a solid breakfast stop!

Food: their coffee tasted great! I forgot to ask if they can make it less sweet so I’d say to me their original flavoring is on the sweet side. However their coffee is probably by far the best one that goes super well with milk ✨ we ended up buying some packs of their grounded coffee and beans. Service: it’s a small and hidden shop but the staff is warm and helpful. Ambiance: deserted retro style overall. Cozy and chill.

Found this place after passing our usual one (Coffee Shack) because it was too packed. This place has fresh food and coffee! We had the chicken wrap, two eggs any style, iced coffee (the one without coconut) and fresh OJ. I also ordered an expresso which was delicious. The service was OK, not too helpful or friendly, just order what you want and then they bring you the check. We didn't get any water or suggestions for food. Our server was neither welcoming nor rude, but the food was alright. The eggs were too light so it looked like they had been mixed with milk maybe? Or they just were not from healthy chickens? The chicken wrap was the star of the show. The wrap was fresh and the veggies were as well. My husband enjoyed it. The slaw was OK. The house fries were also OK. The overall experience was good and we would definitely return and try something else. They serve breakfast until noon and lunch all day until 3pm when they close. If you are not a breakfast person then this is a great spot. We will be back and update on the food when we do!
