A Slice of Kona History

Since 1917, Manago Hotel & Restaurant has served as a cornerstone of the Captain Cook community. Perched on the slopes of the South Kona district, this family-run establishment feels less like a modern eatery and more like a time capsule. The creaky wooden floors and open-air dining room offer sweeping views of the Pacific, where the smell of salt air mixes with the unmistakable aroma of their legendary pork chops.

The Famous Pork Chops

You cannot talk about this Big Island institution without mentioning the pan-fried pork chops. Served sizzling in a cast-iron skillet, they are simple, salt-and-pepper crusted, and consistently tender. They lean into a no-frills, home-cooked aesthetic that has remained unchanged for generations. The menu sticks to traditional local favorites, proving that you don't need molecular gastronomy to satisfy a crowd after a long day of snorkeling at Kealakekua Bay.

What to Expect When Visiting

The atmosphere is unpretentious and community-focused. You will likely be seated alongside multi-generational families and farmers from the surrounding coffee belt. Be prepared for a modest dining room that can get quite noisy during the dinner rush as the chatter of locals bounces off the walls. Parking is straightforward but can feel a bit tight when the restaurant hits peak capacity, so plan for a quick shuffle if you arrive during the height of the dinner service. It is the perfect stop for those who value authenticity and history over polished, white-tablecloth service.

This place has haunted my dreams for 13 years since I left Hawaii. I used to come here with my father for pork chops and ono all the time and it's one of my favorite memories. We returned to the island this past month and this was my number one place I wanted to visit. Not a thing has changed, and I say that in the best way possible. Friendly service, giant portion sizes, they still have the best pork chops in the entire world. We literally planned our excursions around when the restaurant was open to make sure we were able to come here. Definitely stop in if you get the opportunity. Promise you won't be disappointed.

Arrived towards the end of the shift, but still had time to thoroughly enjoy our pork chops and butter fish, the fish melted nin your mouth and the chips were just like my grandmother made with a great gravy. Waitress was very diligent and friendly, the great thing is that the sides arrive almost Immediately so you can munch on them whilst waiting for the main course. So glad we managed to make it only open Wednesday through Saturday currently so plan accordingly.

DO NOT ORDER shrimp satay. (Why did i order this instead of pork chop, which literally everyone in comment ordered?) it is 6 pieces of shrimp submerged in cooking oil for $4 each. It does not taste good nor have a reasonable price

My girlfriends and I made a special trip to lunch here as part of our little adventure from Honolulu. It was a very delightful & delicious meal; a step back in time with old Hawaii flavors; unforgettable! We hope Manago Hotel will stay!

The hotel has been family-run forever. It has history and charm without glitz. The restaurant is great.

The food here was delicious. If you are staying in Kona take a little side trip here at the “where everybody knows your name place”. The oldest restaurant in Hawaii. Family style pork chops, rice, Mac salad, and cabbage and bean sprouts. So good. With drinks 30 bucks. Excellent staff. People are really missing out if they are only hanging in Kona. Sadly, this place is for sale. I don’t know what that will mean but so wonderful for now.

I can't really rate the hotel because I didn't stay there. But the restaurant was amazing. They boasted they have the best pork chops on island and it is very true. I also got to taste the butterfish cause my friend ordered it. And that was delicious. Highly recommend the pork chop which comes with big pork chops. So if you don't have a big appetite, it's probably good to share.
