A Crispy Tradition in South Kona

When driving the winding roads through Captain Cook, the unmistakable scent of freshly fried taro and sweet potato signals you have arrived at Kona Chips. This isn't your average snack stop; it is a labor of love where the island’s volcanic soil meets a simple, effective culinary technique. You will often find the air thick with the earthy, warm aroma of deep-frying, a sensory cue that keeps locals coming back.

The Art of the Crunch

The menu keeps things refreshingly straightforward, focusing on perfecting the quintessential Hawaiian snack. The signature taro chips are sliced to a delicate thickness, resulting in a snap that holds up well against their house-made dips. Unlike mass-produced alternatives found in big-box stores, these batches prioritize flavor profile over shelf life. Whether you grab a bag of the classic salted taro or opt for a mix of uala (sweet potato), you are getting a product harvested from nearby farms.

What to Expect

Plan your visit with a bit of patience, as the parking area can get tight when the tour buses pass through or the lunch rush hits. The space is modest and utilitarian, designed for grabbing a bag of chips to enjoy while overlooking the Kealakekua Bay area rather than lingering for a formal meal. It is the ideal pit stop for road-trippers heading south towards Miloliʻi or those just finishing a snorkel session. Expect a bit of grit and a lot of heart; this is authentic Big Island snacking at its most honest.

Just love the potato chip/savory snack offerings. Other interesting selections include: nuts, popcorn, trail mix as well as salt, seasonings for yourself or gifting.

Kona Chops are sold all around Kona. But if you venture to the town of Captain Cook, you can see all their chip varieties at much better prices including Furikake Pork Rinds, Shrimpette, Special Limited Editions and great value on seconds! I wanted to get the BBQ Chips, but the gallon jar was too big to bring home! They are Kitch’n Cook’d and spun to reduce oil. (Remember how oily Maui Kitch’n Cook’d were? But still loved them)

Awesome kettle baked style potato chip. Can’t get more local than this. They’ll even ship a large box of purchases home for you….$15. Parking is in a lot to the side of the store down a short ramp. Support local merchants 🤙 …

Wow! I'm so glad I picked up the furikake chips in a Kona grocery store. Best chips I've ever had. Thick cut but not greasy. So addictive I wiped out the bag in one sitting, and figured out how many bags I could order for $20 shipping back to the mainland. Love the company story, too.

Turns out they’ve been around for quite a while but I’ve never heard of them until recently. A friend experienced one of their products while abroad a domestic Hawaiian Airlines flight and told me about these chips that “Tasted like Maui Potato Chips with furikake”. KITCH’N COOK’D: Being a Maui boy, this slogan is very familiar to me as it adorned the bags of our infamous (and now sadly defunct, Maui Potato Chips). I thought maybe Maui Potato Chips sold the brand to Kona Chips, or there was infringement going on. Turns out, “Kitch’n Cook’d” is a trademarked franchise name and business model out of Ohio. What the… They supply franchisees with the cooking equipment and cooking process, also garnering them the homely-sounding name & logo. THE GOODS: Furikake Chips We found them on Oahu while picking up our orders of taro chips from the Hawaiian Chip Company. The 3.25 oz., $8.00 bag of chips aren’t cheap! Apparently one of the hallmarks of the brand is that their chips go through a “special spinning process that reduces oil and adds extra crispiness”, as emblazoned on the bag. Taste wise, they were good as the salty furikake seasoning went well with the chip’s pure flavor. OVERALL: Tasty but pricey goodness.

Coming from Oahu, the chips are as AMAZING as the staff. We were welcomed with the most friendliest greeting and they offered to ship our products for such a reasonable price. When we got home 2 days later, we were greeted with a huge box of our omiyage we enjoyed that night. If I could give 10 stars, that’s what they’d deserve. 👍🏻🤙🏽 …

This shop is a goldmine! All the chips are crispy and grease-less, but the furikake shrimp chips were our favorite :) They also sell a variety of other snacks and local offerings, including dried li hing mui, hot sauces, and spice rubs. The family running the shop are super kind and they ship online if that’s your jam.

Cute, well-stocked store for boutique snacks in the area. But the chips are super expensive and didn't taste much better than the big name brand kettle chips tbh; it didn't feel worth it to spend $40 on 4 bags of chips. They had some interesting flavors including chocolate covered chips.
