Fuel Up Before Your National Park Trek

Positioned just minutes from the entrance of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this casual eatery serves as the primary pitstop for hikers and explorers traversing the Big Island’s geothermal landscapes. Volcano's Lava Rock Cafe captures the rugged spirit of the area, offering a laid-back environment where muddy hiking boots are a common sight and the air smells faintly of rain and ohia forest.

Hearty Fare for Island Explorers

The menu focuses on straightforward, soul-satisfying comfort food designed to replenish energy levels after a long day of trekking through Kilauea's craters. Expect generous portions of local staples, including house-made chili and sandwiches that don't skimp on the fillings. Their breakfast options are particularly popular among early risers looking to beat the crowds to the Thurston Lava Tube. The kitchen leans into island-style classics, with coffee sourced from nearby plantations that cuts through the morning chill of the higher elevation.

A Local Mountain Quirk

While the interior feels like a classic mountain lodge, don't expect a formal dining room experience. The space is modest and utilitarian, reflecting the transitionary nature of the village itself. You might find the service pace reflects the relaxed "island time" rhythm—it’s the perfect place to linger with a map, but perhaps not the spot if you are in a frantic rush to meet a tight tour schedule. The walls are often adorned with community notices and local art, grounding your meal in the actual life of the Volcano community rather than a manufactured tourist attraction. Whether you are seeking a hearty burger or just a warm cup of coffee to shake off the mist, this cafe remains a permanent fixture for those wandering the slopes of Mauna Loa.

Meh... That's the best I can give this place... Just unimpressive all the way around. Service was non-existent and food was odd.

The service was mediocre at best, and the food was extremely disappointing. My meal arrived dry, overcooked, and overly salty. Despite being very hungry, I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. For an $80 meal, I expected much better quality and attention to detail. Unfortunately, this was a frustrating dining experience, and I would not recommend this restaurant.

This friendly diner in Volcano Village was a lifesaver for us. We were left stranded after another restaurant cancelled our reservation last minute, but the staff here warmly welcomed us tourists without hesitation. The food was fantastic and the portions were huge—we left completely stuffed! I particularly enjoyed the Coconut Shrimp appetizer and the Steak with a side of steamed asparagus. The service was wonderful; the staff were friendly and fun to chat with. The atmosphere is like a cozy mountain cabin—unpretentious, intimate, and very relaxing. Thank you for saving our dinner!

The hamburger was huge, 2 patties. The food was good. Great value for the price. The service did not meet my expectation. Anytime we needed extra napkins, a refill, etc we had to get up and let the waitress know. Small quaint place. The restrooms are outside. While using the facilities, I was met by the "resturant cat" is what they called it. Cute little thing, several employees were feeding, holding, and playing with the cat. The is a gas station on site.

Looks are deceiving. This place is really good! Hubby had the fettuccine Alfredo and it was very good. Im not generally impressed by most Alfredo and they surprised me in all the right ways. I had the Teriyaki Chicken. I love that finally someone knows how to grill a chicken breast!!! Nice little char on the outside and tender and moist on the inside. Many places way overcook Chicken breast and dry it out. Kudos! I like i coudl pick my own side because I was in the mood for curly fries. Not a normal combination but I loved that it ticked all our boxes! Definitely would recommend.

We stopped in for a quick and light bite on our trip around the island. A cheeseburger for me and fish n chips for Bae off the kids menu hit the spot. The place is clean, welcoming and the service was spot on. The food wasn't bad either.

They accept phone order and pick up in store. The location is local for Volcano Residents but a lot of tourist are visiting as well. This is the best place with GREAT FOOD AND CHEAP PRICE! Everything are made with Aloha and staffs are amazing! Parking are plenty back to the restaurant. It closes by to the Volcano National park, Volcano Winery and golf course. I love this local place!

Food was decent, nothing extravagant. We stumble upon this place because most places were busy or closed during our time in the area. Service could have been better given that it was slow. Restaurant had a lot of cool photos of the volcano up which were for sale and a mural in the patio. Bathroom are outside of the restaurant and were not well kept.

It took about an hour and 20 minutes from the time we started waiting, until the time we got our drinks. I suspect that we would have waited longer if I hadn’t got up from the table and asked someone if there’s a way we can put in our order. Other people who were behind us in line got their drinks and food right away. Even after we put in our order, there was still a substantial wait time. The food was hit and miss. The steak was great, but the Mahi Mahi was deep fried, which was not what I expected on a dish served with rice.

We were looking for a restaurant open late on our first night in town. This was one of the only locations open past 8PM. We were excited! The staff were friendly and efficient as the places was full with many larger groups. Our food came out quickly and was delicious! Overall a nice dinner spot with reasonable meal prices.
