A Garden Sanctuary Near the Crater

Stepping into Cafe Ono feels less like a typical restaurant visit and more like slipping into a hidden greenhouse. Located in the heart of Volcano Village, just minutes from the gates of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, this eatery prioritizes a quiet, botanical atmosphere. The sound of rain tapping against the glass ceiling is a constant, soothing companion while you dine surrounded by lush tropical ferns and hanging orchids.

Farm-to-Table Flavors

The menu leans heavily into local, organic ingredients, reflecting the island's unique volcanic soil. Signature offerings often highlight fresh, seasonal salads and house-made quiches that pair perfectly with their locally roasted coffee. You won't find deep-fryers here; instead, the kitchen focuses on bright, clean flavors that emphasize the bounty of the Big Island. Their lilikoi-infused desserts are a standout for those who enjoy a tart, refreshing finish.

Local Nuances

Be prepared for a slower pace of life. The service operates on "island time," which fits the serene environment perfectly but might surprise those in a rush to head back to the caldera. Parking can be a bit tight right in front, so keep an eye out for the small pull-off areas nearby as you navigate the misty, winding roads of the rainforest. It is an ideal spot for hikers looking for a peaceful pre-trek breakfast or an intimate lunch before exploring the nearby lava tubes and steam vents.

We came here for lunch on our last day in Volcano. If you’re in the area, it’s an absolute must see and it is a highlight of being in Volcano. The food was excellent! The gallery was full of beautiful art and handmade gifts for purchase. The best part was the grounds and secret garden, though. A very beautiful and peaceful place.

Came here with my husband after our hike in HVNP and couldn’t have been happier with our decision! The ambience is spectacular. A quaint, tranquil cafe with plenty of outdoor seating options. The food was delicious as well! My husband raved about his lasagna and after trying a bite, I completely understood. My artichoke and pesto sandwich was so refreshing as well. We then got to talk with Ira, the owner, for awhile after our meal. What a wholesome, kind man. He gave us so many tips of local things to do and was just the most pleasant. Our waitress (didn’t catch her name unfortunately) was also so great! So friendly and efficient. Exploring the grounds and the gallery was a perfect way to end the meal. HIGHLY recommend. We are going to try to make it back before we leave!!

Hidden gem for vegetarian and vegan food near Volcano National Park! We ordered the Coconut Lentil Curry, which was incredibly flavorful and perfectly satisfying for two people. The staff were excellent—warm, welcoming, and attentive. The attached gallery is filled with beautiful artwork and handmade gifts that are definitely worth browsing. A must-visit spot!

Fantastic vegetarian & vegan meals in a beautiful setting. Part restaurant, part art gallery, part high-quality gift store, and part tranquil garden. Very close to Volcanoes National Park. Wonderful place with lovely people. Cannot recommend highly enough.

Artsy little Cafe with mostly outside garden seating but some inside. Meat free but not vegan menu. Also has an art gallery and garden to walk through. Service and food were both great, has a somewhat limited menu.

We visited the island for a quick day trip from Oahu, and spotted Café Ono online on our way from the airport. The four of us loved our meals. The gallery/gift shop is full of beautiful artwork and gifts. It was quite wet today, but we were comfortable and dry dining in a tent, and the sound of the rain on the tent roof was really lovely. The garden is absolutely worth a look. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and absolutely recommend!
