Mountain Warmth Near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Stepping into Kilauea Lodge feels like entering a private mountain retreat hidden amidst the lush canopy of the Big Island. The centerpiece of the main dining room is a massive stone fireplace, original to the structure, which was built in 1938 as a retreat for the YMCA. The scent of wood smoke often lingers in the air, providing a stark, cozy contrast to the misty, cool temperatures of Volcano village.

Refined Island Flavors

The menu leans into a blend of local Hawaiian ingredients and classic continental techniques. If you visit, the macadamia-nut crusted catch of the day is a staple, balancing the crunch of local nuts with the delicate flakiness of fresh white fish. For those seeking something heartier after a day of hiking the nearby crater, the slow-cooked lamb shanks or the rich, dark chocolate desserts are popular choices that lean into the lodge’s rustic charm.

An Intimate Forest Escape

The dining room features oversized windows that look out into the dense, fern-covered forest. It is an ideal spot for couples or families who want to escape the humidity of the coast. Be prepared for the acoustics; on busy nights, the historic wooden architecture carries sound, creating a lively, communal hum. Parking can be a bit of a shuffle in the small lot during peak dinner hours, so arriving just before sunset is a smart way to snag a spot and watch the light fade through the towering trees before your first course arrives.

We were staying on the Kona side of the island, but we wanted to stay the night one night close to the Hawaii volcano national Park, which is my first recommendation. Kilauea Lodge was one of the number one recommendations on my Facebook group and we booked it right away. We decided to do the honeymoon suite which is room 11, Mostly because it had a fireplace and a balcony and we utilized both! We absolutely loved our room! We made reservations well in advance at the restaurant for dinner Which I also highly recommend! Breakfast in the morning was small, but fresh and perfect, and all we needed Before getting on our way north to head to the botanical gardens and Akaka falls! It was a perfect stay, and we will definitely be back!!

Never been here before to this historic lodge and restaurant. Lived here a long time on the Big Island and feel silly not visiting this awesome place before. Only ate at the restaurant, but haven’t stayed in the cabins yet. But, based on the restaurant experience alone I was very happy and could imagine the cabins being great as well. Beautiful scenery and a nice nature trail surround the location. The ambience and food of the restaurants was great!

We had a great experience at the restaurant. Our waitress and every staff member we interacted with were so kind and caring. My husband has severe food allergies, and they made sure his dish would be safe for him. Our food took a little longer than expected to come out, so the chef made us a special appetizer, which was delicious! We got the lamb and tofu curry, and both were amazing. We would definitely come here again!

Great stay at the Lodge! Super close to VNP. Excellent dinner and appreciated the live view of the volcano. We even made a late night trip back to VNP because we saw the red glow was visible at dinner. Large umbrellas at the rooms helped …

We had our 25th anniversary dinner at the restaurant. We made a dinner reservation the afternoon we arrived in Volcano, and enjoyed our afternoon activities looking forward to a great meal. We were not disappointed. The food was solidly good, with ample portions, and the lilikoi cheesecake was amazing! Friendly service, lovely and comfortable decor, beautiful flowers, great art, a glowing fireplace with a story behind it... There's a lot to love here! Great gift shop too, with some very thoughtful, special locally made items. Prices & selection were great in the gift shop. We look forward to coming back to Hawaii and enjoying more meals at the Kilauea Lodge 😊🌺

Highly recommend! The cottage is adorable, clean and stocked with everything you’d need. The breakfast serves healthy Greek yogurt, eggs, bacon, fruit, oatmeal and homemade muffins. The lunch and dinner restaurant’s meals are hearty and delicious. We were able to purchase unique gifts at their gift shop. This location is perfect.

Food was good. Cocktails were good too. Get the baked brie...thank me later. Beet salad was good but needed extra dressing. Beef risotto was decent. Ravioli was yummy but pasta was too thick and the truffle oil was over done.

Probably the best vegetarian breakfast I’ve had in Hawaii! We stopped in on our way to Volcano NP and did not stay at the lodge (but we should have!) The spinach egg Florentine dish was so good, imagine fondue and eggs with fresh bread. Coffee was fresh! Service was amazing and friendly! Would definitely come here again!

My wife and I spent a couple of nights at the Kilauea Lodge in May, 2026 after several nights in Kona at a large resort. The contrast between the two was interesting. While the large resort was nice, it felt impersonal with employees …

Went for dinner 🍽 food was very good . Dinner menu is $50 + for most items. I had Lamb shank which was absolutely wonderful! This may not be your every day place but if your looking for something special and you are near volcano you need to put it on your list. Great breakfast and lunch also served. The atmosphere and landscape is one of a kind. A+
