Rico's Taco Shop
About
Big Island Soul in Every Tortilla
When you are navigating the winding roads through the lush rainforests of Volcano, finding a reliable spot for a quick, savory meal is essential. Rico's Taco Shop stands as a local landmark for those craving authentic Mexican street food amidst the cooler, misty climate of the Big Island. The air here often carries the scent of seasoned carne asada hitting a hot flat-top grill, a sharp contrast to the damp, earthy aroma of the nearby fern forests.
A Local Staple Near the National Park
This spot is a favorite for travelers heading to or from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The atmosphere is unpretentious and stripped back—you come here for the food, not for a white-tablecloth experience. Whether you are grabbing a quick lunch before a hike or refueling after a day of watching glowing craters, the menu focuses on straightforward, hearty staples. Expect generous portions of street-style tacos, stuffed burritos, and house-made salsas that provide a necessary kick of heat to clear your sinuses after a chilly day in the uplands.
The Experience
The space is functional and efficient, often buzzing with locals and hikers alike. Keep in mind that seating can get cozy during peak hours, and the parking lot can be a bit of a puzzle to navigate when the lunchtime rush hits. It’s a classic, no-frills setup where the focus remains squarely on the depth of flavor in the marinated meats and the snap of fresh cilantro and onion. If you find yourself in this unique pocket of Hawaii and want a break from the standard resort dining, Rico's offers that reliable, savory comfort that hits the spot every single time.

SO good! The tacos were some of the best we’ve had. The workers were so kind and patient with our large group. Highly recommend the birria.

The food was so yummy that I came back twice in a row! The owners were friendly and the service was fantastic. There is a small eating area and a little car park. I highly recommend Rico's Taco Shop and will definitely be coming back the next time!

Incredible tacos, best I've ever had outside of Mexico. Absolutely cannot miss this when in Volcano. Super friendly owners too! So great to chat with. Would fly back to Hawaii just for these.

Best tacos we've had in 10 months and you might make new friends when you pull up. Flavor and portions were great. We have been traveling from the East coast to the west Coast and were so pleased with our beef/barria tacos and carne asada burritos. the rice and beans were delicious too. We were able to make one more trip to Rico's before we left, check their hours but sun Mon 230-5 worked for us. Food can get very expensive, but we felt their prices were fair and fulfilling.

Go. Go. Go. You won't regret it. We stopped here before heading to the Volcano and it was absolutely delicious. We were able to eat at the picnic table beside the food truck and ordered a mixture of burritos and tacos all were mouth watering delicious.

We have gone twice now to this great food truck. The staff is very friendly and sincere. The food is why we go, the flavors of the consomme dipping broth for the Birria is rich without being overly salty. Sadly I could just drink the broth by itself on a cold night. Tortillas are always crisped to perfection and the toppings never over power the protein. If you are on your way up to Volcano or South Point and vice versa, this is a great place to stop for some food. Parking can be a bit tight at the Bed&Breakfast that they share the space with. Going back up again in a couple weeks to try Mulitas and Nachos 😍.

Beef taco plate & pork burrito. So good. The best taco I've ever had!!!! So crispy shell and melted cheese with shredded beef was heaven. There's not much place to eat but you can eat in your car. The people are so nice and welcoming too!!! Must have if you're nearby!!!

As a Guatemalan I am always on the hunt for the perfect balance of spice, smoke and cilantro. Rico’s Tacos delivers on all three. The Al Pastor street tacos were tangy and moist with a hint of smoke and clove. They left a nice heat in my mouth afterwards which is my absolute favorite level of spice. The sauce was hot and perfect for an ocasional dip or to add to the beans. The Birria street tacos were good. The meat was very simple but the cilantro, onion and jalapeño touched it up nicely. Best tacos on the island! *Google says they are in Volcano and closed. They are currently in a black food truck by the AutoZone in Hilo.
