The Puako General Store
About
A Time-Capsule on the Kohala Coast
Walking into The Puako General Store feels less like a quick errand and more like stepping into a piece of Big Island history. Located right along the quiet, sun-drenched road that hugs the shoreline of Puako, this spot serves as the unofficial heartbeat of the community. The air inside is cool, scented with the faint, salty breeze of the Pacific and the familiar aroma of hot Kona coffee brewing behind the counter.
Island Provisions and Local Flavor
While the shelves are stocked with the everyday necessities for locals heading to the beach, the real draw is the deli counter. They are widely recognized for their hearty, no-nonsense sandwiches and fresh wraps that provide the perfect fuel for a morning of snorkeling in the nearby tide pools. It is the kind of place where you order your meal, grab a cold drink, and listen to the rhythmic clatter of surf gear and local chatter.
The Local Pulse
If you visit during the middle of the day, expect a bustling, tight-knit crowd. Space is at a premium, and the interior can feel snug when a group of snorkelers flows in all at once, but that is part of the charm. It is a no-frills, authentic experience. Whether you are a resident grabbing a quick lunch or a visitor looking to get away from the polished resort scenes nearby, this shop offers a genuine slice of Hawaii life. Just keep in mind that parking can get creative when the beach crowd peaks, but the reward of a fresh sandwich eaten with ocean views is well worth the minor shuffle.

We used to love this place, having come for years. What happened? Empty shelves, low quality everything and apathetic staff. No thanks.

Stopped off today before snorkeling. Bought some cookies and drinks. The cookies were indeed very delicious! Plenty of cookies available around 10:00 a.m. on a weekday

Cute shop, but the items I was purchasing were overcharged at the register from the advertised price, and the cashier didn't care Also, half the items in the store don't have a price... So with this in mind, it seems like they can charge whatever they want, depending on who you are, or possibly what color of skin you have... possible discrimination can happen when prices are not clearly listed and adhered to. Not a good buisness practice and won't be stopping in again

I got there too late for the cookies! She said they sell out by noon and that they sell 300 or so per day! But lucky for me, a fresh warm batch of banana bread had just been made. I bought a load ($8) and took it to the beach and enjoyed! The cookies will have to wait until next time :)

Super friendly crew, with the best chocolate chip macademia cookies we've ever had. Thanks for the recommendation to grab a stack of them!

YAAAAAAAS! The bartender that worked at the Fairmont Orchard sent us here over a year ago. We stop here for the BEST MACADAMIA NUT COOKIES EVER! AMAZING! She told us how she gave Bret Michael's band the cookies when they were performing here. WOW!😲
