Sunsets and Sashimi at the Water's Edge

Perched directly above the crashing surf of the Kohala Coast, Canoe House captures the essence of open-air Hawaiian dining. As the sun dips below the horizon in Puako, the space transforms into a warm, amber-lit sanctuary where the salt air mingles with the scent of kiawe-grilled proteins. It is the kind of place where you lose track of time, watching the tide roll against the black volcanic rock just a few feet from your table.

The Culinary Focus

The kitchen leans into the bounty of the Big Island, emphasizing hyper-local sourcing. You will find fresh Big Island abalone and catches brought in by local fishermen, often prepared with a subtle Japanese influence. The menu changes frequently to reflect seasonal harvests, but the focus remains on clean, bright flavors that don't compete with the dramatic Pacific backdrop. Expect high-quality sashimi that feels like it was sliced seconds after leaving the ocean, paired with cocktails that highlight local lilikoi and fresh citrus.

The Atmosphere

The layout is sprawling and breezy, designed to pull the outdoors in. It attracts a mix of barefoot travelers and locals celebrating special occasions. Because the architecture is so wide open to the elements, be prepared for the occasional gust of wind to rattle the napkins or the sound of the ocean to swell during high tide, occasionally making conversation a bit of a challenge. It is not a place for hushed, formal dining; it is loud, vibrant, and deeply connected to the coast. If you find the parking lot filling up quickly near the entrance, it is a sign that the evening rush has begun, so arriving early for a pre-dinner walk along the shoreline is a local ritual worth adopting.

5/5. Exceptional on all accounts. Billy, Gill, and Joe provided flawless service across the bar and dinner service. Chef is very talented and made a point to come check on us. We tried most of the menu over several occasions and everything was excellent from timing, taste, portions, and presentation. Wine menu is extensive. Lastly, the ocean view is magical. A very special experience on all accounts and highly recommend.

Stopped by for my birthday dinner with the Hubs and loved the setting and atmosphere. Refined, lively, with a touch of relaxed Hawaiian vibe it was the perfect place to be seated outside on the terrace with dimmed lights. Although I did find it slightly too dark but it was still romantic and a lovely table. Service was professional and Engaging. Felt very celebrated but also gave us space to have a nice dinner. As far as food goes, the daikon salad is a must fresh and crisp just perfect to open up the palate. Star of the evening was the grilled lobster. Rich in flavor covered in spiced coconut sauce, delicious. We found the steak a bit underwhelming nothing special. All in all, great spot to celebrate something nice or just come for a evening out.

Me and my friends came here for a birthday dinner and it was one of the most breath taking sceneries and phenomenal food. Sam was our waiter and he went above and beyond for us.Gave us the best recommendations and gave us a complimentary ice cream. Grumbles and Cleo were the best assistant servers coming behind our lovely assistant waitress, she never let our waters run dry.The view alone made it worth coming. We got a little bit of everything and for the price it was so worth it. The freshness of the food was like butter in your mouth. I recommend going when they open, so you get that sunset view. We definitely will be back on our next trip!

Nice ambiance and setting in the Auberge Mauna Lani. Service was average at best, especially for a restaurant of this calibre. I decided on the Kona Kanpachi after seeing it in the reviews mentioned frequently. It was well presented nice flavour but definitely not fresh, it did have a fishy taste. Mahi mahi was disappointing to say the least. Shrimp was good. Lamb medallions were also just ok. Ambiance and setting is quite nice but easy to find comparable on the island which have better service and prices. Was $500 + for a party of four with only mains, a round of drinks. Don’t know if I’d come back unless I’m staying on site.

Dean was our wonderful server. He recommended the catch of the day, which turned out to be a lovely snapper. The side of mushrooms was excellent too, and so was the chocolate lilikoi cream dessert. Best lemonade I’ve ever had! Showed up half an hour early and they seated us with no problems. For parking, if you’re not staying at the hotel: just valet parking at the front of the hotel, the restaurant validates it so it’s complimentary.

One of my fav restaurants in Hawaii and it delivered every time! The Hawaiian / Asian fusion food was amazing and the view was hard to beat. Come here early for the best seating for the sunset.

We chose CanoeHouse for our first night in Hawaii, and the ambiance was exactly what we were looking for. We started at the bar while waiting for our table, and the service was excellent. The bartender was so friendly and gave my husband a great recommendation; I had the Purple Petal, which was incredibly well-balanced and one of the most memorable cocktails I’ve had. For dinner, the raw appetizers were the absolute highlight—the scallops and the poke-style sashimi were incredibly fresh. Both of our fish entrees were also delicious. We finished the night with the Waimea blueberry and citrus dessert, which was light, refreshing, and the perfect end to a wonderful meal. Our serve Ian was perfectly attentive; always there when we needed him but not overbearing. Highly recommend for a special evening!

We came here to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday. It’s a very intimate setting and very romantic. The staff here are very nice and attentive. I would highly recommend the oysters and starters. For the mains, we had the mahimahi and prawns. The mahi-mahi were a little dry. I’m finally for desert, we had the first one on the menu, which was the chocolate cream. That was definitely worth a try. The start of the show I would say is the cocktail. 4 stars due to the mains and price (250+ for two) . Overall, would recommend this restaurant

The CanoeHouse was an absolutely amazing experience. We had the pleasure of being served by Ian, whose warmth and hospitality truly made our evening unforgettable. He was welcoming, attentive, and added such a personal touch to our dinner. The food was exceptional!! Hands down the best we had on our entire trip. Every dish was beautifully presented, flavorful, and the quality was unmatched. And the view at sunset? Simply breathtaking. It made the whole evening feel absolutely magical. This is now our go to dining spot whenever we're on the Big Island. Don’t hesitate. Make a reservation! Thank you for such a beautiful and memorable night, Ian. We will absolutely be back!

DEFINITELY do not miss the Canoe House!!! It was our favorite dinner on the island. The view is spectacular, sitting in the open air, watching the sunset, it's absolutely gorgeous!! Our server, Billy, was friendly and provided excellent service. The GRILLED WHOLE KEAHOLE LOBSTER was thee BEST lobster I've ever tasted. It was tender beyond belief, plentiful and worth the $95 price tag. It was easily accessible in its shell, moist, cooked to perfection and the chef accommodated a different delicious coconut curry type sauce given I have allergies to Gluten and Dairy and didn't resonate to the spicy accompaniment. The carrots were ordinary and a bit too hard, we don't recommend them. The roasted chicken was tender, a mix of dark/white meat served on the bone. It was tasteful, however, not worth the price tag. The mango sorbet was enjoyable and the Canoe House sundae was unique and absolutely delicious!! Constructive feedback would be to create additional options for individuals like my spouse who are non fish/seafood or beef eaters. Given, the Lobster and the ambience was out of this world and the service exemplary, we will definitely return on our next visit!!
