Where the Kohala Coast Meets the Table

Positioned right along the rugged Puako shoreline, Manta offers a dining experience defined by the rhythmic crashing of Pacific waves against black volcanic rock. The air here carries a distinct salt spray, and the open-air design ensures that every seat captures the fleeting, brilliant colors of the Big Island sunset. It is an ideal stop for those finishing a day of snorkeling in the nearby tide pools who want to trade their fins for a cocktail.

Island-Sourced Ingredients

The culinary philosophy leans heavily into the bounty of the Kona side. You will find the menu rotating based on the morning catch, featuring preparations like butter-poached opah or local kampachi served with shaved hearts of palm. The kitchen focuses on simplicity, letting the natural sweetness of the seafood stand out rather than masking it with heavy sauces. Pair your meal with a glass of crisp white wine while the tiki torches flicker to life, casting long, dancing shadows across the hardwood floors.

A Local Observation

The restaurant maintains an authentic, unpretentious pace that mirrors the relaxed rhythm of the Puako community. Be prepared for a bit of a localized quirk: because the dining area is so close to the water, the humidity can be quite high, and the wind occasionally picks up with enough force to send a napkin flying. It is a small price to pay for being this close to the water's edge, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a private coastal gathering than a formal commercial dining hall.

The views are stunning! Absolutely loved the scenery at this restaurant. The food was ok, but nothing special - it lacked a lot of seasoning. The only food item that was really spectacular was the Bombe Alaska. It seemed they were understaffed. We had to ask for water a few times and our server was constantly running around but hardly had any time for us, although he was very kind and had good recommendations. I think each waiter had more than 10 tables to wait on... They were not properly staffed. We felt bad for him and it created a less than impressive service experience.

If you are looking for a view this is the place for you. If you are looking for tasteful food don't go here. I had the Ceasars salad and the Forgotten zucchini. The salad was very small and very tasteless. The zucchini was an appetizer portion ($52.00) and nothing to even talk about. My wife had a similar reaction to her meal and she is writing her own review. Our $176.00 meal was a waste of our time. P.s. our waitress took our order and we didn't see her again until she brought the check.

We were lucky enough to stay in Hawaii for eight days and our dinner experience at Manta was the highlight of our trip. The ambiance and sheer quality of the food and service was unmatched compared to all of our other dining experiences. Stand out personally was the bistek with the oxtail marmalade and the side of sweet potato leek. I can't wait for my next trip to come and enjoy again!

Went on September 23rd there, the ambience was nice, ordered burrata, oysters and beef tenderloin. Everything was delicious, despite slow season there was nice live music and our server was attentive and always checking on us if all good. Orders came on time. Enjoyed the night out and especially was happy to see manta rays!! Didn’t want to go to water at night to see them and this place literally made it happen the best way. Also stars at night in the sky are amazing!

A pricey but fantastic spot where the food was rich and full of flavor. Fun and unique local cocktails, a decent sized menu with lots of local fish, and stunning views make this place a nice dinner splurge.

It’s kind of Thai restaurant with other Asian dishes. So you might want to make sure that you are totally OK with coriander leaves. I didn’t see people ordering more plates because it’s a bit pricey for the quality. As you can see in my post, Mantas are a minute away from the restaurant, down stairs and you’ll see. The water was rough and we couldn’t find any. Jazz live music was awesome, and we enjoyed it a lot.

One of the best meals we had on Kona! Everything was prepared to perfect perfection, and the staff was attentive and professional. Started off with a double order of the oysters, scallops ravioli, and the foie gras special. For our main course, I had the macadamia nut crusted mahi-mahi, my wife had the sweet shrimp curry, while my son selected the wild caught Ahi sashimi. We ended the dinner with the sorbet special and the bombe Alaska, coupled with a glass of the 40 year-old tawny port. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you’re looking for a fine dining experience in a fantastic location.

This is our third time visiting Manta! We usually celebrate with friends and family with going out but this visit was just as nice for business visitors. Great bar service, unusual cocktails and an amazing wine cellar! Normal pricing for the resorts but the quality is top notch! We shared starters and wine but the majority of the table had fish specials. The Bombe Alaska was the favorite dessert and an espresso martini finished the night! I'm sure we'll be back for a 4th visit...
