A Kapalua Institution for Island-Inspired Sushi

When the sun dips below the West Maui horizon, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar transforms into the heartbeat of Kapalua. Known among locals for bridging the gap between high-end culinary craft and a raucous, high-energy atmosphere, this is where you go when you want your sashimi served with a side of lively conversation.

Signature Flavors from Chef D.K. Kodama

Founded by Chef D.K. Kodama, the kitchen specializes in contemporary Japanese flavors fused with local Hawaiian ingredients. The panko-crusted ahi sashimi is a non-negotiable order; it arrives with a warm soy-wasabi butter sauce that smells of ginger and toasted breadcrumbs. The menu is expansive, ranging from traditional nigiri to inventive rolls that challenge the standard definition of sushi.

The Late-Night Pulse

The interior echoes with the sound of clinking sake glasses and the rhythmic chop of knives behind the bar. It is loud, unapologetically busy, and often crowded, especially during the legendary late-night happy hour sessions that draw visitors from across the island. If you are seeking a quiet, intimate corner, you might find the energy a bit intense, but for those craving a social environment where the staff moves with precision despite the chaos, it is unparalleled.

Parking in the Kapalua Resort area can sometimes feel like a puzzle, so give yourself an extra ten minutes to navigate the lot. Once you settle into your seat—whether at the bustling sushi bar or a table overlooking the greens—the focus shifts entirely to the quality of the catch and the artistry on the plate. It remains a cornerstone of the Maui dining scene for anyone visiting the northern shores.

So disappointing. The reviews here are all so good so we anticipated a great experience and tasty meal. First we made reservations and asked for the sushi bar, but when we arrived they said they weren’t seating at the sushi bar. What? On a Friday night? We were seated in a room to the side with 4 or 5 other tables. It was quiet and not really part of the rest of the restaurant. My husband had us move to the regular bar hoping for a better experience. Sadly the bartender seemed to be having a bad day. Super dry, not a smile the entire time, and appeared to not want to be there. I ordered the Hawaiian roll and when it arrived I was shocked. It was maybe an inch in diameter and just 6 pieces. The Ahi inside the roll was gray, almost brown in color. Raw Ahi is red to pink. The Rainbow roll was pretty good but really quite bland. We so wanted to be able to give this place a great rating unfortunately 1 star was the best we could do. Maybe we were there on an off night…

The experience here was underwhelming considering the price to value aspect. The food overall was alright but nothing outstanding that would bring me back or to recommend. Still gave 4 stars as there is nothing wrong with the food - cooked well, tasted good, and raw seafood was fresh. Only thing is that for the price paid, I expected more rather than just some seafood/sushi that I can get from other location for a lower price point.

Went for “Early Bird” (basically 50% off most things Sunday and Monday from 5-5:45 - get there early. Some lined up at 3:30. We got there 4:30 and were last to be seated at bar). Everything was fantastic, sat at cocktail bar and bartender/waitress staff was a very friendly and attentive young lady, also highly skilled. Everything was fantastic - highly suggest the miso butterfish small plate.

My brother and I heard that there was a 50% off happy hour at Sansei from 5pm-5:45pm so we figured we'd give it a try since we were fairly close at Napili Point Resort. We got there about 4:55pm and there was a big line that we got at the end of. We got the second to last table in the entire restaurant! Our server Chris was phenomenal and very knowledgeable about the food. He was excellent and if you go, ask for Chris! Our sashimi was melt in your mouth good and super fresh. We splurged and it was worth every bite!

We went to this place based on a friend’s recommendation. Walked in and got seated right away with no wait time! Our server was really friendly and made the long wait time for the food to fly by. This place left me with a mixed feeling, a couple of the food were really good, but the rest were pretty meh borderline bad. The good - Asian shrimp cake: The ginger lime chili butter works really well with the shrimp cake. Mango crab salad hand roll: mango and crab is just a good refreshing combo and the sauce finishes it off nicely. The bad - we got a couple of sushi rolls: the most important part of sushi is always the rice, but their rice was slightly undercooked and under seasoned. The presentation is also very sloppy for a sushi bar. Misoyaki chicken: sauce is crazy sweet, it over powers all other flavors. Overall, this place is probably a good intro for people interested in Japanese fusion and sushi, but I will not come back.

Enjoyed the panko and spinach crusted ahi with wasabi butter! tuna belly was melt in your mouth. sushi trio was overly generous fresh but i enjoy smaller pieces of fish.Carpaccio was great and gone too fast. Dynamite shrimp was too bready and falling apart yet shrimp were good. Hamachi roll was a bit disappointing, falling apart and not very spicy. Choose well and you can have a great meal.

This was a great little gem of a place. Really good sushi. We ordered a variety of rolls which were good. Good service. A little busy but it was Friday night so that’s to be expected. Really decently priced. Enjoyed a brick of dessert too.

Unbelievable! This was the best overall dining experience in Maui. Chris was our waiter and knew every dish and had phenomenal recommendations. We spent half as much as Mama’s fish house and got twice the food and quality
