A Fresh Take on Maui Coastal Dining

Perched within the vibrant landscape of Wailea, Oao Sushi Bar & Grill offers a focused approach to Japanese-inspired cuisine that centers on the day’s freshest catch. The atmosphere here avoids the over-the-top resort formality, opting instead for a streamlined, modern aesthetic that puts the craftsmanship of the sushi chefs front and center.

The Omakase Experience and Local Flavors

Patrons visiting this Wailea hub often look to the chef’s choice selections, where the quality of locally sourced Hawaiian fish shines without excessive adornment. You will notice the subtle scent of vinegared rice and fresh brine the moment you take a seat at the bar. Signature rolls here lean into island-inspired ingredients, balancing traditional techniques with the distinct palate of Maui’s coastal lifestyle. The kitchen also handles grill items with precision, offering charred, umami-rich bites that provide a perfect contrast to the cool, clean slices of sashimi.

Dining Notes for Your Visit

The space is intentionally intimate, making it an excellent choice for a quiet dinner or a focused date night rather than large, rowdy groups. Be mindful that during the peak sunset hours in South Maui, the energy ramps up and the sound levels can climb, so it is the kind of place where you want to lean in and focus on your company. Parking in the surrounding Wailea retail plazas can get tight, so plan to arrive a few minutes early to secure your spot before your reservation time.

Whether you are looking for a quick bite after a day at the beach or a refined evening of nigiri, Oao brings a polished, authentic energy to the local dining scene that keeps the focus entirely on the plate.

Best sushi in the area, bar none. My wife and I went to Nobu two nights ago as we are staying at the grand wailea. It was very good. We just came back from OAO—the sushi was objectively better. In my mind, the most important things with sushi are: (1) quality of the fish (2) the recipe and temperature of the rice. OAO nailed both. The toro was unreal - my wife and I talked about it for the rest of the night. Same with the hamachi crudo and the salmon chili roll. Their rolls are fantastic. Also if you like raw oysters, the preparation is so tasty with the sauce, roe, and scallions. My drink was great too. I got the golden nugget. Finally, the staff: so friendly and knowledgeable and quick. Justin was our server, he was so cool! Really nice guy and made great suggestions. If you want expensive theatrics, then Nobu is still a great choice. But if you just want the best tasting sushi, go to OAO. I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could. Excellent end to our honeymoon!

Just had an incredible evening at Oao Sushi Bar and Grill in Wailea! The hibachi carpaccio was an absolute masterpiece—perfectly seared and bursting with flavor. The super fatty tuna melted in my mouth, the ika squid was fresh and tender, and the Red Dragon Roll was hands-down one of the best I've ever had. Their Japanese whiskey selection is seriously impressive, with some real gems behind the bar. Huge shoutout to the bar staff for the friendly, top-notch service that made the whole night feel special. Highly recommend—Oao is a must-visit! 🍣🥃

Everything tasted super fresh, we got the king salmon chili pepper roll, the Japanese slider - which is surprisingly one of the best tasting dish here, and the cream scollops were delicious. All the other classic rolls are delicious as well. I didn’t like the salmon skin roll and the eel roll

Great place for fresh fish! The unagi was great! We had 5 servings! The Seafood Dynamite was amazing, the Brussels sprouts were yummy and the lobster was tender. My son loved the hamachi carpaccio. The unagi avocado roll (without the rice) was really good! Very small portions. We went for happy hour and dropped over $300!

My husband and I came to Oao last week while in Maui for our honeymoon. This place was amazing! We sat at the bar and the staff was really friendly and food came out quickly. The sushi here was so fresh. We went to a LOT of poke and sushi places while in Hawaii, and the fatty tuna maki roll (the exact name of the roll is escaping me) was one of the best things I’ve ever tasted in my life! We also really loved the spicy tuna/crispy rice cakes. So delicious!
