A North Shore Refuel Station

Before you commit to the winding road to Hana or catch the afternoon swells at Ho'okipa Beach, you’ll likely find yourself hitting the brakes at Kuau Store. It’s more than just a place to grab water; it serves as a community heartbeat in this stretch of Paia. You walk in, and the air smells like fresh-brewed Kona coffee mixing with the savory scent of house-made poke and grilled deli meats. It is the kind of place where surfers with salt-crusted hair stand next to locals grabbing their morning paper.

Freshness Meets Island Pace

The culinary focus here is high-quality, grab-and-go nourishment. Their signature poke bowls are the local gold standard, featuring fresh ahi that tastes like it was pulled from the Pacific just hours prior. If you’re looking for something warm, their hot sandwiches and breakfast burritos are legendary among North Shore residents. They lean into local ingredients, sourcing from nearby Maui farms to stock the shelves. You can grab a chilled kombucha or a craft beer from the cooler, but be prepared for a bit of a squeeze—the aisles are narrow and bustling during the lunch rush, which is exactly why it feels like authentic Maui.

More Than Just a Deli

Beyond the deli counter, the store acts as a boutique general store. You might find unique local snacks, reef-safe sunscreen, or beach essentials you forgot to pack. There is a small patio area where the sound of wind whipping through the palm trees provides a constant, rhythmic backdrop. It’s not a place for white-tablecloth service; it’s for those who appreciate honest food, friendly faces, and the chaotic charm of a store that knows exactly what a hungry traveler needs.

Gem of a store! Great coffee. Tons of delicious, fresh food. Loved my poke bowl and kale salad. Nice wine selection. Very delighted this spot was down the street from my hotel. Went back 5+ times. Edit - After I wrote this review, I spent a few days in Wailea. This market truly has some of the best coffee and food on the island! And the staff is incredibly kind. You must stop here!!!!

Really an out-of-the-ordinary store with incredible food choices. Freshly made sandwiches, excellent coffee, and local baked goods that are always fresh. They even have poke, plus a great selection of alcohol and soft drinks. Truly a cut above anything else in the area. Perfect stop for snacks, breakfast, coffee, or lunch—and a great way to support small/local businesses and producers.

Totally recommend this lovely little store! Over spring break, our family stopped daily for drinks and snacks with our teens (sometimes more than twice!). We were staying in a house near Mama’s Beach, and it was convenient to have amazing food choices in the neighborhood! The employees were super friendly and gave us a delish free coffee one morning! We usually go to Costco when we arrive on Maui but this time, instead of buying too much food to finish in a week, we stopped in Kū,au and ordered a variety of their delicious sandwiches, salads, and sweet treats for breakfast and lunches instead, and then went out for dinner!! The freshly delivered bakery breads and other unique treats were amazing, not to mention the beer wine and spirits available too! We did go to Costco for steaks to grill one night, but honestly we were all happy with the convenience and options at Kū,au store and the nice people who worked there too! We will be returning next year for sure!

Very convenient stop when on the road to Hāna, but the older lady has a bit of an attitude. And the place is disorganized when it comes to service. I tried to order a Poke bowl and asked if she had more, and she gave me a gesture of what’s here is what we got. So I settled with a flavor. Shortly after, the other flavors were made available. Would have been appreciative if I was told that they were coming since I would end up waiting for about 15 minutes for a simple latte shortly after. No big deal. After ordering my poke bowl, I wanted to order a sandwich for my wife and the lady directed me to go in front of the sandwich display. There was a line of people so I waited behind them. And eventually after waiting she ended up taking my order again. I was really confused why she couldn’t just take my order when she served my poke bowl, but okay. After ordering the sandwich I wanted lattes for the road, at which point I was directed to another line to order coffee directly from the barista. Do you notice a pattern here? The latte took extra time to make as one machine wasn’t working and it was a bit busy. Absolutely understandable. As we waited, we wondered where my wife’s sandwich was. So we followed up with the same lady as to where it was. Little did we know, it was on the counter with other people’s sandwiches unmarked. So we accidentally had two sandwiches prepared. Sharing my experience so that others who have experienced this confusing and poor service do not feel alone. I will not be back.

We came to Maui on vacation from Los Angeles, and on our way back from the famous Road to Hana we randomly stopped by this store — and were honestly blown away. This is not a place where you’ll find the usual mass-market American brands you see at Safeway. You can tell that every product here was selected very thoughtfully and with great taste. Each category feels curated, with the best options chosen. There are many international and European brands, including products from France and Italy, which is actually quite rare to find on the island — especially in such a small store right off the highway. We also noticed an impressive selection of desserts with interesting local flavors and decided to try a few. The guava cheesecake was absolutely unreal. I was so impressed that I felt compelled to leave this review — and I’m extremely picky when it comes to desserts. In every U.S. city I visit, I usually seek out the best well-known European bakeries first. This guava cheesecake is truly something special. We also tried another dessert with nuts, raisins, and some kind of brown sauce — I honestly can’t even describe it properly, but it was incredibly delicious. And finally, we picked up a “superfood” dessert: small brown balls made with fresh cacao, nuts, cranberries, macadamia, and other healthy ingredients. It might not look very impressive at first glance, but the taste is absolutely outstanding. Just because of these three desserts alone, I wanted to leave this sincere review and say thank you to the owners, who have been running this store since 1949. Despite the location and the small size of the shop, they’ve managed to showcase incredible taste, passion, and talent, and truly surprise both locals and visitors with such unique offerings. Highly recommend stopping by and trying these treats if you’re ever here. Huge thanks to your pastry chefs for these masterpieces.

Shaun and Natalie are the main reason I find an excuse to stop by even when I don’t want to. Everyone is friendly and welcoming! And those banana breads are a must

Great local store & deli. My friend had the poke and thought it was wonderful. I had a Ruben since that is my favorite sandwich. It was probably the best Ruben I’ve ever had. Amazing!
