A Refreshing Stop on the Hana Highway

When cruising through the surf-centric town of Paia, the line stretching down the sidewalk is a clear indicator that you’ve reached Ululani’s. This local institution has mastered the craft of shave ice, moving far beyond the simple syrupy snow cones found elsewhere on the island. Here, the ice is shaved to a texture so fine it mimics fresh-fallen powder, creating the perfect vessel for their house-made syrups.

Flavors Inspired by the Islands

The menu highlights authentic tropical profiles. Favorites like the 'No Ka Oi'—a vibrant combination of coconut, mango, and passion fruit—showcase why this spot remains a staple for North Shore travelers. The syrups are crafted with real fruit purees, providing a depth of flavor that is both tart and sweet, rather than cloyingly artificial. Don't skip the addition of a macadamia nut ice cream base or the chewy, sweetened adzuki beans if you want the full local experience.

The Paia Atmosphere

Sitting right on the main drag, the shop is compact and keeps things moving quickly. You’ll hear the rhythmic hum of the high-end shave ice machines and the chatter of surfers and tourists alike. Be prepared for a bit of a scramble to find a spot to lean against while you eat, as the shop focuses more on high-volume production than sit-down dining. It’s an essential cool-down ritual after a morning spent watching the waves at Ho'okipa or exploring the boutiques of Paia.

While parking in this part of town can be a challenge, the reward of a towering cup of rainbow-colored, silken ice makes the hunt for a space worthwhile. It’s a sensory experience defined by the contrast of icy cold sweetness against the humid Maui air.

Didn't know shaved could taste this good. The ice was so velvety smooth. I got the sunset beach. The fruit flavors were strong without being overtly sweet. Doesn’t taste like straight sugar like the typical shaved or Italian ice. Highly recommend.

I had my doubts how good can shave Ice be, and I am originally from Taiwan so I have a pretty high standard. After trying some Hawaiian shaved ice in the pass I was not impressed but luckily I tried Ululani's before I left Maui. It is actually very good. Surprisingly soft and flavorful and the ube ice cream at the bottom was very fragrant, and not some store brought quality. Overall happy for the overall experience. But I think people need to try Taiwan's shaved ice...

Only shave ice I had on Maui but it was fantastic! Only other comparable shave ice I had was Matsumoto in Haleiwa, Oahu. service was fast and the quality of the shave ice was very unique and perfect for the treat. I order the ka na oi or simple “the best” premade shave ice and felt it was fantastic would 100% recommend and come back to. I wish I knew of the Lahaina location cause I would’ve got one there as well.

This is the best Ululani’s on Maui! They have the best variety of ice cream flavors and all the merch. Also, the staff is the nicest and the most friendly. Love this shave ice so much. I usually get it with ice cream (coconut this time) and the green tea syrup is actually pretty great. Mango and passion fruit are some of my faves.

Best classic shaved ice place I’ve tried. It was so good we had to come back a second time because the consistency of the ice was so soft it’s like fresh snow. Flavors were just the amount of sweetness and the price wasn’t bad. The base price is 7.50 and you can choose up to 3 flavors but anything after that or toppings is extra. I wouldn’t mind going back for a third visit before our trip ends.

I got macadamia nut ice cream, No Ka `Oi (Passion Orange, Mango, Coconut) shaved ice, snow cap. Highly recommend! Limited seating in and around the place and the line is a bit long but very worth it. The shaved ice is a great texture, the syrup is sweet, and the mac nut ice cream is really good! The way you order is that you pick your size (small or regular), an ice cream base, then a shaved ice flavor— you can get up to 3 flavors or a pre made combo (which I got, because it was easier to trust them on it). Last, you get toppings— the most popular is snow cap, which is a drizzle of sweetened condensed milk. There are a lot of shaved ice around but I highly recommend this one, or one of the other Ululani’s!

Cannot complain! Always good. 1st time at this location. With covid no indoor seating. Sometime there is a line outside and a few shops down sometimes not. All employees were great. I got med (The Ulu) guava pineapple and hubby got Sunset Beach. Mine was really good until I tasted my husband's haha. We got both with MacNut Ice cream. That is a must each time. It is not the same without. Perfect amount of syrup and wonderful fluffy shaved ice. We were staying in Paia, it was a quick walk. There are benches outside and where we enjoyed our shaved ice. No cash. Parking is a little tricky, it's hard to find but around. They have multiple locations make sure to visit.

Now we know why they are the best shaved ice chain on the island. We tried there most popular combo and it was amazing. We only realized that they are the best when we tried some other popular shaved ice place. They are hands down the best thing ever

This is the best shaved ice I’ve ever had. I’m used to the gritty feel of rough shaved ice but this ice is oft and creamy feeling. I went back twice and settled on mango, pineapple and guava as my favorite flavors. You must add macadamia nut ice cream which sits at the bottom collecting all this flavors. Near the end you get the creaminess and nutty flavors that can’t be beat.

The shaved ice here was incredibly smooth with delicious flavors. It takes a minute for the flavor syrup to seep into the entire bowl of ice but once it does and meshes with the ice cream on the bottom, it is very yummy. The wait to purchase it was not fun though. It took us 30+ minutes waiting to get one order. The line doesn’t look too long when outside, however it takes a while. They only had two registers going - the workers on the registers also made the shaved ice after each individual order and poured the syrup. This could potentially be intentional for customers to see how the shaved ice is made, however it is not time effective and creates very long wait times. It seems possible to have many bowls of ice made by one of the other employees to be ready for all the people waiting in line. However, it was indeed delicious. Overall I would give 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4.
