Cafe des Amis
About
A French-Inspired Escape on Maui’s North Shore
Stepping into Cafe des Amis feels like stumbling upon a quiet corner of Provence, conveniently located right in the middle of Paia’s bustling surf town culture. The open-air patio acts as a breezy sanctuary where the aroma of savory buckwheat galettes mixes with the scent of salty Pacific air. It’s the kind of place where time slows down, making it an ideal pit stop for road-trippers heading toward the Road to Hana or locals grabbing a midday bite.
The Best of Both Worlds
The kitchen here masters a curious but delightful culinary contrast. You can pair a classic French crepe—thin, lacy, and folded over Gruyère and ham—with a robust, aromatic Mediterranean-style curry. The chicken and vegetable curries are served with jasmine rice and a side of fresh naan, providing a warming, hearty contrast to the lighter breakfast-style offerings. Everything is prepped fresh, and you can often hear the sizzle of the crepe pans from the counter.
Local Character
The interior is modest and functional, emphasizing the vibrant energy of the North Shore. Be aware that during the lunch rush, finding a spot to park your rental car in the immediate vicinity can be a bit of a sport; you are usually better off finding a space along the main thoroughfare and enjoying the short walk. Despite the tight quarters, the service remains brisk and friendly. Whether you are craving a sweet crepe drizzled with local Maui honey or a spicy dinner plate after a long day at Baldwin Beach, Cafe des Amis hits that specific craving for unpretentious, high-quality comfort food in the heart of the Paia district.

We had an amazing meal at Cafe des Amis during our stay at Maui. The Mediterranean crepe was delicious, packed with tasty and fresh vegetables. I am also gluten free, and this place had great options including gluten free crepes. Highly recommend this cafe, especially for any vegetarians and/or gluten-free folks.

The food is delicious here, and my siblings and I come often or order for take out since their online ordering is easy. I like their crepes both savory and sweet. The sweet crepes come with delicious homemade whipped cream and can be shared. The only reason why I gave them a 3 is because their service is terrible. There have been so many times when I’ve gone there and my order is messed up, they have given me the wrong items, I’m missing items, etc. This also applies to online orders. You have to check your box before you leave because we’ve had instances where the salad dressing was missing, the chutneys, whipped cream, etc. The waitresses don’t check on customers, and I’ve seen multiple patrons sit down waiting to be checked on and then leave after 20 minutes of being ignored. Water will almost never be filled here, and when they forget an item and you try to get it you’ll wait another 20 minutes and have to go up to the counter ask another person for assistance -they won’t come to you. I’ve seen the waitresses just hanging in the back and refusing to wait on customers when clearly there are people there and they didn’t seem to be doing anything. It was mind boggling. I hope they can get better at this. Definitely did not deserve any tips.

We’ve been here about a dozen times. I recommend dining in, but we have also opted for take-out a few times. The environment is nice. On occasion, there is a live music. We love the vegan, gluten free lentil crepe. The grass-fed beef curry is also a winner. My teenage som has enjoyed every single crepe that he has tried, here especially if it contains mozzarella!!!

This place is a hidden gem. Their indian food is better than many restaurants in India. I ordered mixed vegetable curry and it was finger licking good. It came with complimentary chutney of choice. Highly recommended.

Friends of mine have been here before so I knew I'd be in good hands. ATMOSPHERE: The indoor portion is pretty tiny and open-air. The outdoor courtyard with gravel floor is pretty spacious and protected from the elements by the building walls, eaves, and umbrellas. MENU: Savory and sweet crepes, and different curries. FOOD: Ham & Aged Cheddar Cheese Crepe I really liked it. I never associated crepes as savory, only sweet. Now I'm a total fan! The crepe was just right in thickness and the ham & cheese had great flavor. It came with a leafy green salad with a balsamic dressing. Hummus and Pita Bread On paper this sounds boring, but man, the hummus was absolutely delish! Some kind of tasty oil sat atop the hummus and made it even easier to spread. The pita bread was fresh and moist. Chicken Avocado Crepe I loved it! The crepe was perfectly cooked and filled with fresh avocado, moist chicken and other subtle seasonings with sour cream to the side. The small side of green leaf salad (my favorite veggie) went well with the crepe. It's also an ideal portion size. Banana and Chocolate Crepe We all shared this for dessert. I was a bit put-off that it came with a thin caramel sauce pooled at the bottom of the plate as it's not my favorite sweetener. I had just a few bites as it was too sugary for me. SERVICE: Our female server was friendly and professional. OVERALL: Good food, good prices and good service.
