The Maui Cookie Lady
About
A Sugary Legend in Upcountry Maui
Stepping into The Maui Cookie Lady in the historic town of Makawao feels less like visiting a bakery and more like discovering a secret stash of perfection. Located right on the main drag of this old paniolo town, the shop is small, often bustling with locals and visitors alike who come specifically for Mitra Narula’s massive, decadent creations.
The scent of browned butter and molten chocolate hits you before you even cross the threshold. These aren't your standard bakery cookies; they are hefty, dense, and packed with locally sourced ingredients. Signature items like the 'Da Big Island Mac'—loaded with macadamia nuts and white chocolate—have gained a cult following for a reason. You will hear the crunch of sugar and the chatter of the friendly staff who seem to know exactly which cookie will fix your craving.
Be prepared for a line that snakes out the door during peak weekend hours, and don't be surprised if the shelves look a bit thin late in the afternoon as everything is made in small, artisanal batches. It is a tight space, so consider grabbing your box to-go and finding a quiet bench under the nearby jacaranda trees to enjoy your treat while watching the slow pace of life in Makawao drift by.

I have been a Maui Cookie Lady fan for ten years! Up until November 2019, we visited Maui on an almost yearly basis. (Yes, we are way overdue to get back on island!) I had heard about the Maui Cookie Lady cookies in early 2016 and knew that I had to get one the next time we visited. At that time, the cookies were only available at various local markets that would get a delivery once or twice a week. There was no dedicated retail store then. In November 2016, it finally happened! I was able to find a small supply of Mitzi’s, the Maui Cookie Lady’s, cookies at the Market Maui (since closed). My first cookie was Da Half Baked – a chocolate chip cookie stuffed with Reese’s, Snickers, AND Oreo! OMG…only a super creative cookie chef extraordinaire could have imagined such a delight! I knew that I would be a fan forever!! On every subsequent trip, I sought out the amazing cookies. It wasnʻt always easy to find them, as the batches were small and offered in very limited locations. I would be on a mission and never gave up until I found them. My friends and co-workers were always so excited when I brought them back a “world-famous Maui Cookie Lady” cookie when I returned from Maui. In late 2020, the year after my last trip to Maui, the Maui Cookie Lady opened up a retail shop in Makawao. I haven’t been able to stop by in person yet, but I will be going the next time I visit. I tell all my friends about the cookies, and several have been able to stop by the cute shop. When I am lucky, a friend will bring back some ono cookies for me. The Maui Cookie Lady cookies are not like most of the cookies you are used to eating. The first thing that you will notice is that they are really big!! I like to say that they are “gargantuan”! The second thing is that they are made with creative ingredients that may be familiar to you, or they may be new. Many of the varieties incorporate local ingredients lilikoi, Kona coffee, and macadamia nuts. The combination of flavors will excite any cookie loverʻs taste buds. Don't worry if you are not local to stop by the shop in person. You can order cookies online, individually or via the monthly subscription box. If you are visiting and want to take a few home with you, know that they can be frozen and stay great when you want to enjoy them. They do not contain preservatives, which I think is a big plus. In addition to creating great cookies, Mitzi is a big supporter of the community. She helps with various fundraising efforts to help those in Maui. As a former teacher, she is connected to educators in Hawaiʻi and their special needs. Once I get back to Maui, I will visit the store and update this review. I can’t wait! (Please note that four of the pictures are from 2016 and 2018 before the dedicated shop opened.)

Super cute small store with delicious cookies. Our favourite was actually the caramel they sold. Worth a trip if you are heading up country.

I’ve never experienced such magic as I have at this shop! It’s like you’re walking into fairy land! The cookies are spectacular and worth every penny. The woman at the shop was so kind and helpful. This is a must stop shop if visiting the area or just traveling through.

Very small place, but extremely well organized. They offer a nice variety of products, including chocolate, honey, jellies, frozen items, and of course their specialty: cookies. The cookies come in different sizes—from sampler packs to individual and giant cookies. We tried five flavors: Oatmeal Peanut Butter Butterfinger, Lilikoi White Chocolate, Maui Mango, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and Kona Coffee Chocolate Velvet. Our favorites were the first two, absolutely delicious with a great explosion of flavor. The mango one was a bit underwhelming, and the last two had a very strong chocolate flavor. We were expecting more coffee notes in the Kona Coffee cookie, but the chocolate was quite intense. Each cookie is 6 oz and costs around $7.”

As a self proclaimed Cookie Monster, the Maui Cookie Lady was on my “must visit” list during our family trip to Maui and the store did not disappoint, and neither did the treats! The shop had such an adorable whimsical aesthetic filled with amazing cookies and treats. If you have a sweet tooth like me, this must be on your “must visit” list as well. I especially loved the the Da Half Baked giant 10 oz cookie and the ultra decadent peanut butter triple chocolate salted caramel brownie but there’s so many options for every preference!

We stopped in the store which is definitely unique and charming. We had heard about these cookies and purchased two small bags of cookies, each with four cookies. One bag had four different cookies. The other was the "Limited Edition Waipoli Twilight" described as "Hawaiian Sea Salted Dark Kōloa Rum, Black CherryTopped with a Blood Orange Reduction Drizzle". Definitely unique combo that is simply amazing. I believe I purchased the last bag in the store but see them available for purchase on their site. I encourage everyone to buy these cookies and demand they're made part of the standard supply! LOL
