About
A Century of Sweet Traditions in Upcountry Makawao
Walking into Komoda Store and Bakery feels like stepping back into a quieter version of Maui. Established in 1916 by Takezo Komoda, this wooden storefront has served as the heartbeat of the Makawao community for generations. The aroma hits you before you even cross the threshold—a warm, buttery mix of caramelized sugar and fresh-baked flour that defines the upcountry morning experience.
What to Order: The Local Favorites
People start lining up before dawn for a reason. The signature cream puffs are the star of the show; they are notoriously elusive and often sell out shortly after the shop opens its doors. Beyond these custard-filled treasures, you will find their famous stick donuts—a dense, chewy, sugar-dusted indulgence—and the guava malasadas that pair perfectly with a cup of locally sourced coffee. If you lean toward the savory side, their meat pies are a staple for anyone heading up the slopes of Haleakalā.
The Upcountry Tempo
This is not a place for a hurried breakfast. You should anticipate a line, and because the space is essentially a time capsule of plantation-era architecture, it is quite cozy. Be prepared to enjoy your pastries on the go or while leaning against the railings overlooking the historic streetscape of this paniolo town. The parking situation can get tight during peak morning hours, so bring a bit of patience—the flavor of the old-school donuts and the nostalgic charm of the bakery are well worth the minor wait.

I was so excited to try the donut shop that I forgot to take pictures but we got an assortment around eight of them. They were all very delicious. Highly recommend if you are in the area. This has to be on your list.

What’s a spot on Maui that never misses no matter how many years go by? Komoda’s in Makawao… You can smell it from around the block before you even get there… Been holding it down since before Hawaii was even a state… The stick doughnuts slap hard… The pies are timeless… And still somehow the best deal on Maui… Old school…simple…done right… Worth the wait every single time… Everything’s just that good…

The guava malasadas are 👍🔥💯!! I didn't really like the cream puff because the filling isn't whipped cream, but like vanilla pudding. Bring cash or order more than $10 to use your credit card. The ambience could use some work, but I think this place is well known and doesn't need to be beautiful!!

When we tried 1st time, the store was closed. 2nd time we were early enough and it was open. The stick donuts are great but my favorite is Coconuts danish. Their baked goods reminded me of the old sweets in Japan when I grew up. I felt very nostalgic feeling. I loved the antique vibe in the store. I felt like I went back in a Time Machine. We loved the shopping bags that have many Japanese establishments in Maui. ❤️🥰

I love these unassuming hole-in-the-wall type shops that don’t care about decore and decorum because they’re singlemindedly focused on one thing: making bomb donuts and pastries. The malasadas and cinnamon rolls are excellent, and I had no doubt their other offerings are equally delicious. Plan to spend more than $10 if you only have a card, or bring cash. And take a stroll up and down historic Makawao while you munch on your goodies. It’s a good time, and a stop worth making.

Excellent donuts and great prices! We had the cinnamon sugar malasada donut, the donut stick, and a cream puff and all were absolutely delicious! The staff was friendly and patient as we asked questions about ingredients for an allergy. We were there in the late morning/early afternoon and while there were still selections, some offerings were out understandably. Highly recommend!

A must-visit spot when you're in or passing through Kula. They serve traditional pastries with a exquisite and unique flavor. The PUFF CREAM PASTRY and the MALASADAS are their signature items. The service isn't the most friendly, but the food is absolutely worth it, 100% recommended.

Desserts aren't my forte, so I'm not one to get excited by bakeries and confectionaries. Put an ice cream shop in front of me and we have a different story. So why am I reviewing the infamous bakery of Makawao and a popular island wide establishment? Because cupcakes hold a strong second place in my heart. Read on... Whenever I'm eating something from Komoda's, its because someone brought them to work or a party. I will not make a special trip up to Makawao to buy sweets. But after what I recently tried this past Halloween at a friend's house, I honestly would make the drive up. ATMOSPHERE: I've been inside maybe twice, over a decade ago, so I can't comment on the inside digs, but the outside is just what a mom & pop place looks like: Plain, simple, and looks at home in a western movie. DESSERTS: Chantilly Cupcakes I had no idea that chantilly was a local recipe until I Googled it. The specifics are that its a German chocolate cake without coconut. Great for me because I'm not a huge coconut fan. So what does it taste like? The chocolate cupcakes are super moist and just melts in your mouth. The inside is filled with a small amount of the cream that makes a chantilly cake, a true chantilly cake. The flavor is similar to caramel, a bit sweet and a bit salty, and really damn good. The cupcake is topped with the same cream and a maraschino cherry. Wow. This cupcake guy is a total fan. This would definitely kick some Cupcake War ass! Cream Puffs Meh, I've never been a fan of these. I don't care for the texture of the cream puff which reminds me of stale bread, or the flavor of the cream which has a chemical-like taste. Pass. Butter Rolls Four Sisters Bakery does the best job at these because they put an obscene amount of butter in theirs. Here, they go light on the artery clogging. The trick is to zap them for 20 seconds in the micro to soften up the dough and warm the butter. Delish! French Apple Pie A co-worker ordered a whole pie because she absolutely loves it. The slice I tried was absolutely delish! The crust was flaky with that great homemade baked taste, the filling was full of chunky apples and not overly sweet, and the whole thing is topped with a mixture of crumbled crust and possibly a dusting of sugar crystals which gave it a slight crunch. Yowza! This guy may be turning into a dessert lover... OVERALL: Must try cupcakes for the cupcake fan.

Desserts: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 3/5 Overall: Worth a go for some good sweet treats. Gotta get there early! The extended review... Desserts: Peach Pear Turnover - 3/5 - Not a bad turnover. Pretty standard fare. I would have enjoyed it being a little bit more crispy. Donut Sticks - 4/5 - One of the staples of the store and a must have. It's definitely a very fresh donut, nice and and chewy and perfectly glazed. Cream Puffs - 5/5 - OMG. You must get these. The filling is amazingly rich and tasty. We bought a dozen and I could not stop eating them. Service: 4/5 - Friendly service. Ambiance: 3/5 - Slightly run down on the inside and more of a grab and go place since there isn't anywhere to eat.
