A Slice of Upcountry Tradition

Perched on the slopes of Haleakalā, Polli's Mexican Restaurant has been a fixture of the historic Makawao town scene since 1981. This isn't your typical beachside tourist trap; it is where the paniolo culture meets a laid-back, family-friendly cantina aesthetic. Walking inside, you are greeted by worn wooden floors and a collection of eclectic decor that feels like it has been curated by decades of local patrons.

What to Expect on Your Plate

The menu focuses on classic, hearty Mexican comfort food. The signature chili verde—a slow-cooked pork dish seasoned with house-made tomatillo sauce—is the main draw for long-time residents. Pair that with one of their famous margaritas; they are known for being potent and served in generous glasses that help you forget the brisk chill that often rolls into this part of Maui in the evening.

The Makawao Vibe

The atmosphere is bustling, often filled with the hum of locals catching up after work. It can get quite loud when the room is full, and the seating is cozy to the point of being intimate—you will likely become well-acquainted with your neighbor's conversation. Finding a spot for your car in the nearby town lots requires a bit of patience, but the proximity to the boutique art galleries and the charming, rustic architecture of this cowboy town makes the effort worthwhile. It is the perfect stop for those looking to swap their swimwear for a sweater and experience an authentic, unpretentious slice of life in the Upcountry region.

Wasn’t in the mood for Mexican but wanted something warm that felt both healthy and satisfying on this cool day! Really friendly service - I don’t eat meat when on the island and they were so awesome about letting me have a mix of both the shrimp and fish to my tamale 🫔because I just couldn’t decide. :) Flavorful, fresh and hit the spot!!

I came in as a single for dinner. I ordered a beer immediately. The waitress seemed burdened and it feels that I am being rushed. No chips and salsa. No rice and beans. I can't wait to see what two tacos cost. The restaurant is very busy and seems to be fun. I wish I felt the love. I drove from Paia for dinner. I expected a bit more.

On a busy day our waiter really did a great job. He was running! Wish I got his name. I’m clearly a selfish jerk. Such great happy service. Reminds me of old Hawai’i with smiling faces. The bean dip is filling and yummy so I couldn’t even eat much of my dinner. I ordered the taco salad with the crunchy shell. The oil used was fresh and the tortilla absolutely yummy.

You wouldn’t think veggie fajitas would be so delicious, but the flavor of them was the best I’ve ever had. Chips are so fresh and light too! All ingredients were fresh and so tasty. Great food and team.

What an amazing lunch. Kiana was so fun. Her recommendations were spot on. Group of 4 had margaritas and fish tacos. The chips and salsa with the drinks were a pleasant surprise given how restaurants have cut back giving anything complimentary. Margaritas were spot on amazing. The fish tacos had large pieces of fish and were very authentic. Kiana made us feel Ohana by the end. So much so we ended up taking a picture with her 😀 I recommend cowboy town for a little shopping but definitely stop here for lunch. Was the highlight of our Maui vacation.

If you’re anywhere near Makawao, do yourself a favor and stop by Polli's Mexican Restaurant. I just had one of those meals that makes you pause after the first bite. I ordered the refreshing lilikoi iced tea—bright, tangy, and perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, just crisp and tropical enough to cool you down instantly. For the main, I went with the Burrito Supreme Chile Relleno, and wow. It came generously loaded with black beans, rice, a well-seasoned veggie mix, and their house-made red sauce that tied everything together beautifully. The chile relleno itself was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of heat. Add in the creamy sour cream and fresh guacamole, and every bite had the perfect mix of spice, comfort, and freshness. The portions were hearty, the flavors authentic, and the overall experience incredibly satisfying. Definitely a spot I’ll be dreaming about long after this meal.

We had a fantastic experience here. Jessica was our server and she was wonderful. She found us a great table and took excellent care of us throughout the meal. The food was amazing. We ordered the beef burrito and the chicken burrito, and both were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Great service, great atmosphere, and truly delicious food. Highly recommend!

We stopped by here. A cute little gem… Mexican cuisine. Tried their burrito, mushroom, Mexican rice, tacos. Ambience is good cozy n has a nice vibe. We had to wait 10 mins but we quickly got the seating. Rated the food 4, it’s good. Didn’t like the drink and the mushrooms. Their hot sauce is good.

Service Kiana was lovely, an absolute delight. She was friendly and radiated joy. You can tell she really enjoys her work- serving up love! Food We started with the tres amigos which included salsa, guacamole, and queso dip with chips (warning-it’s easy to fill up on the chips and salsa). I ordered a non- alcoholic Michelada drink- delicious. For our main dishes I ordered the shredded beef burrito, which was outstanding and my partner had the half order of baby back ribs which he enjoyed as was very happy he only ordered the 1/2 size. Great ambiance and good vibes. We will definitely be back! Mahalo Nui Kiana!

ATMOSPHERE: Tiny little open-air spot at the busy intersection of Baldwin & Makawao. The interior fits the genre perfect with the Spanish decor, stucco walls and arched doorways. Its a bit cramped with table, booth & bar seating. FOOD: Makawowie Nachos The chips were a mix of homemade and bought. Someone in our group opted for chicken to my dismay, but it was actually really, really good. And the toppings... Talk about a super generous overload! Globs of guacamole & sour cream, tons of cheese, olives & tomatoes. There was actually not enough chips - the total opposite of what you'd normally experience. Chimichanga It's huge! I got the beef version which was shredded. Even though I'm a fan of ground beef it was still delish. Axed the rice. Came with beans and topped with shredded lettuce, sour cream & guacamole. Fresh Mushrooms An entire sizzling platter full of whole fungus done in butter and wine. Good taste, price and portion size. Burrito Supreme I am not ashamed to admit that I LOVE ground beef in my burritos, but that's a difficult wish to be granted. I just prefer the texture of ground vs. shredded. This version is available with shredded beef, chicken, or a veggie taco mix, in which case I went with the beef. It's a humongous portion filled with cheese, your choice of refried or black beans, rice which I omitted, and crowned with dollops of sour cream and fresh guacamole, and garnished with lettuce shreds and a pool of salsa all around. The flavor was mild, but just drizzle on some Cholula hot sauce and we're good to go! I could only finish half, so the other half was saved for lunch. Seafood Enchilada Dinner The two flour enchiladas were covered in a sheet of melted Monterey Jack that were stuffed with generous chunks of firm ono fish and small, crunchy shrimp. Other compliments were fresh guac, beans of your choice (I got refried) and Mexican rice that pleasantly surprised me as I'm usually not a fan. It was a good portion size that even I couldn't finish. SERVICE: No reservations are taken. Whether you enter from the front or side door, someone will assist you; just be patient and stand there. Our server was on top of everything and checked on us often.
