Fresh from the Upcountry Soil

In the rolling hills of Makawao, 'Oko'a Farms operates as a cornerstone of Maui’s sustainable agricultural scene. This isn't your typical storefront; it is a direct connection to the volcanic soil of Upcountry Maui. Visitors arrive to find tables overflowing with rainbow-hued produce—everything from crisp, locally grown kale and heirloom tomatoes to exotic tropical fruits that rarely make it to standard grocery shelves.

The Upcountry Agricultural Pulse

The experience here is defined by simplicity and dirt-under-the-fingernails authenticity. You’ll hear the hum of local honeybees and the distant rustle of eucalyptus trees while browsing. Known for their regenerative farming practices, the crew at 'Oko'a focuses on nutrient density rather than mass-market aesthetic. The air carries the sharp, sweet scent of crushed herbs and damp earth, a refreshing shift from the coastal salt air.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Keep in mind that this is a working farm environment, so don’t wear your best white sneakers if it has been raining; the ground can get soft quickly. It is the ideal stop for home cooks and chefs seeking ingredients that were harvested just hours before they landed in your kitchen basket. Whether you are grabbing a bag of fresh avocados or scouting out medicinal herbs, you are supporting a food system that prioritizes the health of the island’s ecosystem. It is a quiet, industrious spot that rewards those looking for the true taste of Maui's highlands.

Came here as a first time tourist in Maui and had a big goal to try as many fruits as I could that I cannot find on the mainland. Their selection was plentiful, diverse, and excellent. One of the associates actually walked me through each fruit I was interested in to talk about how to pick it/tell its ripeness, and offered samples which was very generous. They have homemade soups, homemade bread, other produce, and local makes. It feels family run, it is a humble place, and equally fantastic

My absolute favorite place to shop. Ryan and his family are incredible — true stewards of the land. Their produce is the freshest and most beautiful I’ve seen anywhere, always clean, thoughtfully bundled, and grown with so much care. I’ve discovered so many unique fruits and vegetables here over the years — white sapote, java blue bananas, finger limes, sorrel — and the quality never disappoints. Their arugula is the best on the island! I also love the specialty items from local makers, like the sourdough, muffins, and red sauerkraut. Grateful for the heart and hard work they put into their farm and shop!

When I get to the bottom of my jar of kale chips. I sprinkle the rest as a salad topper. If you haven’t tried this yet you definitely should these kale chips are delicious. No matter how you eat them. It’s seriously one of my favorite snacks:)

typically love going there for our produce.. but the prices have gotten ridiculously high. Was very sad to see the price for a dozen eggs is now 15$. And that is more than any normal person can afford. They’re shutting us out 😞 …

Great produce shop. Better than unripe food in a large box store, this small location has some of the freshest food on the island.

Very cool to see what’s growing on Maui! In addition to terrific fresh fruits and vegetables, there are herbs, spices, and really cool freeze-dried fruits.

Beautiful market for local goods: stunning fresh cut flowers, vibrant produce, all kinds of canned goods & other delights. I am so glad I stopped by here after visiting the farmer’s market, and am happy to know the ‘Oko’a Farms storefront is open 7 days a week.

‘Oko’a farms has consistently delivered fresh locally grown food to farmers markets around the island. Now their new store is quite literally one of the best places on all of Maui to source high quality ingredients. They do an incredible job at maintaining staple items like eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, breads, honeys etc. while also stocking seasonal specialties and exotic island fruits. Highly recommend their lychee, ginger, wasabi radish, and the arugula is amazing. Congratulations on your new store!
