A Taste of Local Culture in Upcountry Maui

When you find yourself winding through the cool, misty streets of Makawao, the scent of slow-roasted kalua pork wafting through the air is your cue to pull over at Ohana Island Grindz. This isn’t a place for white tablecloths or formal dining; it’s a quintessential Hawaiian hole-in-the-wall that prioritizes substance over style.

Island Comfort on a Plate

The kitchen specializes in classic plate lunches that define the Upcountry palate. You will find the portion sizes here are generous, typically featuring two scoops of white rice and creamy macaroni salad as the foundation for their hearty main dishes. Their loco moco is a local favorite, smothered in rich, brown gravy that tastes like it has been simmering since sunrise. The shoyu chicken is another standout, offering that perfect balance of savory soy sauce and ginger that keeps residents returning weekly.

The Makawao Experience

Expect a relaxed, no-frills environment where the sounds of casual local chatter fill the room. The seating is modest, and you might find yourself bumping elbows with a paniolo or a local family picking up dinner on their way home from work. It serves as a grounded, authentic hub for anyone craving genuine Hawaiian soul food without the resort prices. Just a heads-up: parking in this historic cowboy town can be a bit of a scramble during peak lunch hours, so arrive with a bit of patience. It’s the kind of spot where the food speaks louder than the decor, making it an essential stop for those wanting to eat like a true Maui resident.

Had time to kill while getting my car serviced. Stopped in for a quick breakfast and really glad I did. Prices were very affordable for the portion size and the breakfast was perfect. Nice little local cafe with good food and friendly staff. If you’re on Makawao it’s worth the stop.

Of you're looking for an authentic local food experience, this place is a good example. It's a small restaurant with an all female crew, at least it was on the day we went, and it was comfortable and clean. The ladies were singing along to the radio as they worked and the food we were served was exactly what we expected. We both chose mocos, me the Briskit and my husband the regular hamburger patties. While the eggs could have been cooked less, more easy instead of hard, the gravy was good and the meat tasty. And I loved the Potato Mac salad!

Came into this diner more by accident than intent. And I’m glad I did! I’ve been wanting a loco moco since I got to Maui, but this place has loco moco, as well as two other mocos: roast pork and beef brisket. I got the roast pork at the recommendation of the waitress. The pork was tender and melt in the mouth. And the gravy was nicely paired to it. My BF would say it needed more salt, but for me and with the gravy, it was just right. The Mac salad, yummy! The staff are friendly and patient (especially since I came in randomly, looking very lost regarding if I sit myself or are seated) A couple tips: - no specialty coffee, just drip and it’s hot! So just watch your tongue. But the coffee is well brewed with a lot of flavor and is not super bitter. I drank it black. - food also comes out super hot (not the salad), so again, watch your tongue! - the mocos can be orders as minis which is half a regular order. Perfect size if you’re looking for something smaller. Hope I get a chance to come back and try something else! Enjoy!

No doubt in my mind that this spot deserves 5-stars all across the board! I’ve worked in restaurants for 12 years and I did the biggest no-no by showing up closer to closing time because I did not check their hours. All three employees gladly took my order, made my order while singing to Shania Twain, and handed me my order with smile! We ordered the Shoyu chicken, Regular Moco Loco and the Brisket Moco Loco and every bite ended with a “mmmmmmmmmm 😛”. I cannot recommend this spot enough! A+ staff with incredible homemade food loaded with TLC, what more could you ask for?! Side note: I asked if they had spam Musubi and unfortunately, they do not have that on their menu. Upon receiving my order, they handed me some Spam Musubi because they had the ingredients for it and left me speechless because I almost started crying in joy. That is next level customer service that is rare to find and I will forever remember this moment.

The food was great and probably the most reasonably priced we’ve encountered on the island! The portions of the mocos are pretty large and came quickly. Adding pics of the Ohana Saimin (noodle bowl) and Beef Brisket Moco as well as one of the many huge blueberries that came in the yogurt and Açaí bowls.

This was one of the best meals we had in Hawaii while we visited for two weeks. The service was fantastic and they introduced us to Hawaiian Mac salad!! The Mac salad was the best we had in Maui!! My only complaint is I wish they were closer to FL so I could eat here more often. 🤣

Brisket, roast pork and Mac salad were all delicious. Kale salad also great, slightly salty though. Small independent place with friendly service, come here!

Absolutely the best traditional Hawaiian plate lunch! The Shoyu chicken was SO flavorful and tender, fell right off the bone. The potato-Mac salad was delicious too. My husband for the roasted pork and was so pleased also! Great prices, excellent customer service, and easy access location in the Upcountry. We’ll definitely be back!
