Mixed Plate Pukalani
About
A Taste of Upcountry Soul
When you find yourself cruising the winding roads of Upcountry Maui, Mixed Plate Pukalani stands as a reliable anchor for authentic local flavors. This is the kind of spot where the scent of shoyu-marinated proteins and the sizzle of the flat-top grill greet you before you even cross the threshold. It eschews the polish of tourist-heavy beachside cafes, favoring a functional, no-frills setting that prioritizes substance over style.
The Pukalani Standard
The menu here functions as a crash course in Hawaii’s culinary history. You will find the quintessential mixed plate—a balanced assembly of comfort foods that typically features double-scoop macaroni salad, steamed white rice, and heavy hitters like crispy chicken katsu or succulent teriyaki beef. The textures are consistent: the crunch of the panko breading against the softness of the starch is exactly what the residents of this elevated region expect from their midday fuel.
Know Before You Go
The atmosphere is bustling and casual, often filled with local workers grabbing a hearty lunch between shifts. Don't be surprised if the noise level climbs during the peak afternoon rush, as the small space tends to amplify the friendly chatter of regulars. Parking can be a bit of a localized puzzle depending on when you arrive, so stay patient while navigating the lot. It is the perfect stop for anyone craving honest, portion-heavy Hawaiian plate lunches while traversing the slopes of Haleakalā, offering a genuine glimpse into the everyday eating habits of the Makawao and Pukalani community.

Not so friendly people, when we walked in the guy there didn't seem to happy to help. And got bothered when we asked what came inside the burritos ect. When he said the burritos had the beans and rice on the side and just meat and lettuce on the inside he'd say like traditional Mexican food and look at us like we were lost or crazy. I mean you can make a burrito like that but the beans and rice usually go inside it. And when we said we were going to comeback and keep looking they just locked the doors.

Just discovered this place and it's really good! Had the carnitas plate. Just a heads up it's cash only but there is an ATM 20 yards away.

My husband and I shared a plate with a beef enchilada, chicken tamale, rice and beans. We share because we just don't eat that much anymore. The food was delicious. We finished the mains but couldn't finish the rice and beans. Very affordable for us.

We were just passing through and starving, I’m so glad we chose this place. The prices were slightly higher than we expected, but once we got our food we knew why!! The veggie burrito was HUGE! quite literally the biggest burrito i’ve ever seen. The prices are MORE THAN FAIR. The owner was very friendly and helped me find something vegetarian friendly that I would enjoy, and was patient with my questions. We had a very good expirence here and would return

I ordered the Pasteles plate. It came with 2 huge pasteles, 2 scoops of gandules rice, scoop of mac salad and green salad…WOW!! Their Puerto Rican food is amazing!! Good flavors on the pasteles and gandules rice both were spot on, AND all that for $15….incredibly ‘onolicious!! Will send all my friends there. Mahalo nui for a fabulous meal for two 😋

The best Mexican food on Maui! If you want the most authentic, delicious, out of this world bursts of flavors, go to Mixed Plate. It's located upcountry in Pukalani at the Pukalani Terrace Center. I got the 2 taco traditional pork plate with rice and beans. Its priced at $15. The tacos are rammed with meat, it's well worth it! Whole pinto beans and Mexican rice are the genuine article. You can tell they care about the quality of food they serve. You won't be disappointed.
