A Morning Staple in Upcountry Maui

Stepping into Kama Hele Cafe feels like catching your breath in the cool, misty air of Makawao. Positioned in the heart of this historic paniolo town, it serves as an essential pitstop for locals fueling up before heading toward the slopes of Haleakalā or the winding road to Hāna. You will notice the rich scent of freshly roasted beans hanging in the air, mixing with the faint, sweet perfume of tropical flowers drifting in from the street.

Coffee Culture Meets Island Comfort

The menu focuses on straightforward, high-quality ingredients that prioritize island sourcing. Whether you are grabbing a quick espresso to combat the morning chill or lingering over a hearty breakfast plate, the experience is defined by a grounded, unpretentious energy. Their signature approach to craft coffee highlights regional roasts, making it a favorite for those who take their morning caffeine ritual seriously. Expect to find classic breakfast staples elevated by fresh, seasonal fruits found across Maui’s fertile agricultural landscape.

The Makawao Rhythm

The space is compact and intentionally cozy, which means you might find yourself sharing a small bistro table or standing shoulder-to-shoulder with local ranchers and surfers alike during the morning rush. The acoustics can get quite lively when the shop is at capacity, adding to the bustling, communal feeling of a town that still moves at its own distinct pace. It is an ideal spot for those who prefer their dining experiences to feel like a slice of real-world island life rather than a polished tourist destination. Just keep in mind that parking along the main corridor can be a bit of a dance during peak hours, so a little patience is part of the local charm.

Ordered what sounded like an ordinary sandwich, Patty melt. Yet it was anything but ordinary, juicy beef, loaded with delicious bacon, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, avocado, cheese, grilled onions and the deal breaker 1000 island dressing, on a grilled torta bread. It came with Mac salad and chips. Had the sandwich under the tree on a cute blue picnic table after the Maui pineapple tour. I would definitely recommend this cute cafe/food truck to anyone doing a tour or near by. The menu isn't extensive, but they do well with what they offer.

Ate here twice, both times were great! We did the pineapple tour and ate beforehand. I had the BBQ pork, which was really good. The very next day we were brought back here by our guides after our Maui Downhill Haleakala bike ride. I had the French toast. Omg, so good. I keep wanting more of it two weeks later I had to look it up to write this review.

Oh my god the pulled pork sandwich. That was hands down the best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. Bread was soft and delicious. The slaw was perfect and the pineapple with the bbq sauce and pork was unreal. We happened upon the food truck when we went to the Maui Gold Pineapple Plantation tour. The pineapple lemonade was also amazing. Find the food truck and fall in love with the food and the funny pet ducks they have wandering around.

We came here for a light lunch after the pineapple tour next door. We were so impressed with the quality and taste! The patty melt was amazing - patty was juicy, perfectly grilled, cheese melted, and bread toasted. It comes with two sides; we got the fruit and mac salad. The Haleakala sunrise smoothie was smooth and delicious. Probably one of our favourite meals here on this island. The lady is super friendly, and there are plenty of picnic tables around to enjoy the food. Highly recommended!
