Sommer's Snack Box
About
A Taste of Old Hawaii in Kapaa
Tucked away near the bustling center of Kapaa, Sommer's Snack Box serves as a local sanctuary for those seeking honest, no-frills Hawaiian comfort food. This isn't a place for white tablecloths or reservations; it is a spot where the scent of bubbling teri-sauce and crispy fry-bread hangs thick in the humid air, inviting passersby to pull over for a quick, soul-satisfying bite.
Menu Highlights and Local Favorites
The menu focuses on elevated island classics that prioritize flavor over presentation. Patrons consistently gravitate toward their signature plate lunches, which define the quintessential Kauai quick-service meal. The portions are substantial, making it an ideal refueling station for surfers coming off the beach or travelers making their way along the East Side coastal highway. The macaroni salad is chilled to perfection, offering a creamy, tangy contrast to the savory, caramelized proteins that define their grill work.
The Kapaa Lunchtime Pulse
Operating out of a humble structure, the venue captures the unpretentious essence of local dining. You will notice the rhythmic clatter of the kitchen and the steady hum of locals ordering their usuals. While the parking lot can get a bit tight during the peak lunch rush, the efficiency of the staff keeps the line moving steadily. It is the kind of place where the owners know the regulars by name and the food speaks for itself. Whether you are navigating your way through Kapaa for the first time or you are a seasoned resident, Sommer's offers a genuine look at the casual culinary culture that keeps this part of the island humming.

Food was really good. Loved the rustic seating area. Nice vibe for a place mainly for locals.

It’s like Chinese fast food, but Hawaiian. The oxtail was overcooked, making it more dry. The short ribs also a bit on the fatty side. Otherwise the meal was good. Seasoning is well done. Note that they don’t provide water unless you’re buying bottled water. The cashier will bring out the meal and utensils for you but you will have to bus it afterwards.

The food was delicious!! The only thing I would say was the guy working the counter didn't seem too interested in the customer service aspect. Other than that it was a nice place to go for a quick meal. It's more so on the "fast food " side of things but still good food.

Enjoyed lunch with the chickens. Curry chicken was delicious (chicken is like fried chicken fingers with a yummy curry sauce and potatoes.) Beef bowl was tasty, bbq chicken was a hit, lobster rolls were tasty, shrimp tempura eaten up quickly with a smile, and meat plate made for two meals. Service was not with a smile, but helpful and accurate in order and with food questions. Made fresh in 15 minutes.

I usually love L&L Barbecue and enjoy their food! At the Kapaa location though, I ordered a kalua pig with cabbage regular plate and there was a hair in my macaroni salad. I know this stuff happens sometimes. However, I will probably choose a different location L&L for lunch next time!

For L&L, this place is pretty top notch :) nicely lit up and very clean. Ordered the chicken katsu and bbq mix plate. No skimping here. Worth it!

I love L&L. Generally, they serve good Hawaiian comfort food with consistency in quality. This Kapaa location is a pathetic example of what L&L is and even worse, what Hawaiian food is supposed to be. This location is something else altogether. They really don’t care what they serve you or how it’s served. I came here and ordered the Healthy garlic shrimp and Kalua pork. Every kalua pork I’ve tried at L&L and elsewhere had been moist and shredded… that experience has made me love kalua pork. The kalua they served here was dry and old. Their “healthy” garlic shrimp came out deep fried. I notified the counter person that we had ordered the “healthy” version and he told me that we had received the healthy version. I told him, “but it’s deep fried.” He responded “It’s supposed to be deep fried.” His response left me questioning myself as to whether I was the one who had made the error in ordering. But then, I looked up at the menu and what did I see? An actual picture of the “healthy” garlic shrimp and it was not deep fried. I told him, “You have an actual picture of what I ordered and you can see it’s not deep fried.” With that, he responded “Not all L&Ls are the same. I remained quiet in hopes of resolving the matter amicably. After a couple seconds, I asked if we could replace the order with something else. He reluctantly agreed (IMO because 4-5 different parties were seated and listening to our discussion) we asked for a kalua pork sub since the price was about the same and no place had ever done us wrong when it came to the kalua pork. This place was the first. After a couple of bites of their kalua pork, we left. The pic I included is the actual pork that was left over after a couple of nibbles. The replacement kalua pork went immediately into the garbage outside the restaurant as the counter person delivered it just as we were about to leave Like most of you, I also rely on honest reviews in hopes of having a good experience (or to avoid bad ones). For any visitor to the island, stay clear of this place. There’s probably a very good reason why the only other pic of any food is a stock photo from L&L Corp of Korean bbq ribs and not something that was actually served by the people at this location. I guarantee you, if any other franchisee of L&L came to this place, they would mortified and the people at the Kapaa location would probably lose their contractual rights to continue as an L&L.
