Hukilau Lanai
About
An Open-Air Kauai Tradition
Tucked away near the lush greenery of Kapaa, Hukilau Lanai captures the essence of Kauai dining. The space is anchored by a sprawling outdoor patio where the scent of tropical flowers mingles with the salty Pacific breeze. It is the kind of place where locals linger over sunset cocktails, and the sound of soft acoustic music often drifts across the garden, creating a backdrop that feels distinctly Hawaiian.
The Culinary Philosophy
Chef Ron Miller focuses on what the island provides, sourcing fresh catches from local fishermen and produce from Kauai's own farms. You will find that the menu shifts to reflect the season, but staples like the macadamia nut-crusted catch are staples for a reason. The texture is perfectly crisp, giving way to the tender, flaky fish beneath. Pair this with a glass from their thoughtfully curated wine list, which is often recognized for its depth and variety.
Know Before You Go
Because the restaurant has a loyal following among Kauai residents, the energy during peak dinner hours is lively and communal. The tables are spaced to maintain a sense of intimacy, though you might overhear snippets of island life from the table next to you. Parking in the area can get a bit tight as the sun dips below the horizon, so arriving a few minutes early allows you to settle in and enjoy the transition from daylight to twilight. Whether you are planning a special anniversary dinner or a casual night out after exploring the Coconut Coast, the service remains unpretentious, focused on genuine island hospitality.

Atmosphere and service was fantastic. Great live music as well. Only reason for 3 stars is that all the food on the island has been amazing until this restaurant. Not only is it very expensive, but the quality isn’t great. They ended up comping us the pork meal because it tasted like it was freezer burned. I got the opah and it was good. Definitely not worth the price though.

This place is great for a nice dinner with a view of beautiful landscapes grounds. The food was well prepared and the service was welcoming. Unlike some of the other higher end restaurants that we visited, this one actually felt higher end. Definitely a go to dinner spot.

I am a little late writing this review, but I just wanted to say how outstanding Hukilau Lanai staff is. We had our wedding reception in their private dining room in February. Everything from the planning beforehand (shout out to Chantry and KaDi) to the night of was amazing. The service was impeccable and the food and atmosphere were exceptional. We loved our wedding cake so much! I can’t remember the name of our main server (Kira? I’m sorry!), but she was outstanding. Both my husband and I and our guests had the most incredible time. We look forward to coming back here for dinner the next time we’re are in Kauai! ❤️🌺

Incredible. They have an all gluten free menu to offer guests along with their regular menus. TONS of options. The photo is the chicken and mushrooms. Delightful. Mai tai was one of the best of the trip so far. Sweet potato ravioli were okay. Definitely worth trying as they are made with purple sweet potatoes and the sauce is delicious (ask for extra). The garden view is stunning. Well kept, well designed, and created a tropical and cozy feel. Live music also played throughout the night.

We wanted an upscale dinner one of the nights we were in Kauai. It was not cheap, but the food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful. We got the BBQ ribs as an appetizer very flavorful and fall off the bone tender. We had the seafood mixed grill and Wally's steak crown royal. Very flavorful! For dessert we had the Hawiian chocolate factory cake, it was delicious. The ice tea and coffee were the best we had any location while there. The lemonade was probably the best I have ever had. Service was great, very polite, attentive, and timing of the plates was perfect. Would definitely recommend!

Great service and meal for our anniversary! Dedicated gluten free menu including freshly baked GF bread service. We ordered mahi mahi and ahi tuna for our dinners. Both meals were superbly prepared and tasty! Save room for dessert! The crème brûlée was fabulous. Thanks for taking care of us!

We went out with a large group and they were able to accommodate us. We recommend making a reservation. All of us enjoyed everything we ordered from the drinks, appetizer, dinner and dessert. The price is a little more on the expensive side but the quality and presentation made it worth it. The service was excellent as well.

The calamari appetizer was one of the best we have ever had. I went for the ono dinner and was not disappointed. Just great flavor. The accompanying Wally salad I got was just fair however. It needed more zing and dressing. The other entree we had was the chicken dish. So succulent and bursting with flavor. And don’t skip on the Mai Tai. Service was outstanding. Took care of your every need but not overdone. The scenery was a beautiful hotel courtyard area. Lots of trees, bushes and torches. Very nice but no ocean view.

My wife and I came here for our anniversary and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Almost everything was absolutely amazing and even the dishes that didn’t absolutely blow our minds were still good and we are still glad we tried them. To start we had the BBQ ribs, this was a good dish because of the unique flavors on the ribs, but not something we are dying to eat again. The remaining dishes were great. The bread was good! We had the different salads, mix greens with mac nuts, beets, tomatoes, basil vinaigrette & the Caesar, both were excellent. For mains we got the meatloaf and the pasta bolognese, both were amazing, very generous portions and we both left with a ton to take home. Lastly was dessert, we ordered the coconut cheesecake which was good but not GREAT. We are thinking we shouldn’t ordered the macadamia nut tart! Will do next time! Love music was nice and good background noise as we were outside, overall, gorgeous and a great experience! Also shoutout to our server Michelle! She was great!

This was our absolute favorite meal of our trip. From the STELLAR service, to the perfectly cooked food, to the epic view, the experience was exceptional. We didn't get any appetizers, but our meals came with a fantastic house salad. I would highly recommend getting whatever fish trio special they offer. I'll actually dream of this meal for the rest of my life. The sauce for the fish was a curried cream that was luscious and the fish was seared, yet moist, and very mild in flavor. The dessert menu was so appealing that we ordered 3 options and managed to devour all of them. 10/10!
