Duke's Kauai
About
A Slice of Kauai Waterfront History
Walking into Duke's in Lihue feels like stepping back into a more relaxed era of the Pacific. Named after the legendary Hawaiian swimmer and surfer Duke Kahanamoku, the restaurant captures the spirit of 'aloha' with an open-air floor plan that lets the salty breeze flow through the room. You will hear the rhythmic crashing of the waves against the Kalapaki Beach shoreline while you dine, a constant reminder of the raw beauty inherent to this corner of the island.
Island Flavors and Signature Sweets
The culinary focus here is firmly on fresh, locally-sourced Hawaiian ingredients. It is hard to skip the Hula Pie, a massive, legendary concoction featuring macadamia nut ice cream stacked on a chocolate cookie crust, topped with fudge, whipped cream, and extra macadamia nuts. It is best to bring a friend, as finishing it solo is a challenge that requires significant dedication. The menu shifts from day to night, offering everything from fresh-caught fish tacos at lunch to slow-roasted prime rib and coconut-crusted seafood for dinner.
The Lihue Experience
Expect a bustling, high-energy atmosphere. Because of its prime beachside position, the restaurant gets quite busy, and the lively conversation can create a hum of noise that fills the space. If you want a quieter experience, aim for an early lunch or a late afternoon arrival before the dinner rush kicks in. You might notice the floors are kept clean of sand, though the proximity to the water means you are never truly far from the elements. It is an ideal spot for those looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply enjoy a quintessential Kauai meal with an unobstructed view of the Pacific horizon.

One of the best meals we had in Kauai,Hawaii! There was a wide variety of options, especially for guests with allergies, along with great drink selections and a beautiful view. Our server, Grace, was very knowledgeable and provided excellent service throughout the evening. We went on a Friday night and enjoyed the live music near the pond,Highly recommend this place!

Amazing restaurant on the beach in Kauai with beach/ocean vibe and water ponds all around. Two level seating is available technically but this day was only served on the first floor. Pictures of both floors are provided in this review. Fish and chips were superb with house made tarter sauce. Plenty of drink options as well (see menu pictures). Service was prompt and friendly with a food runner making sure food was delivered in a timely manner. Live music on this day at a reasonable volume with opportunity to talk with the table and/or server. Server uses Toast system for ordering with order sent directly to the kitchen from the table. Merchandise stand for those who wish to take a bit of Duke's home with them. Most seats on the first level at least can look straight out at the beach and water. Just a joy to experience.

Had a wonderful experience celebrating my birthday! We had an early reservation at 5:45 via OpenTable. I had put in a request for a table by the view. When we arrived we were seated towards the center of the restaurant. The wait staff were very nice though, and when I inquired about a table by the view they were able to accommodate our group of 4. We enjoyed beautiful views of the beach and the setting sun. I ordered the Mac nut and herb crusted fish and La Pina, a coconut and rum drink that is served in a pineapple. We also ordered Dukes cheeseburger, rib and chicken plate, Dukes mai tai, and guava daiquiri. Our group also opted to add on Dukes salad bar for $9/person to access the unlimited salad, pastas, fruit, and muffins. I really enjoyed the salad bar variety, especially the pesto pasta and macadamia nut muffin. After I returned from the salad bar, my pineapple drink had started to leak on the table. When we informed the waitstaff, they were very apologetic and immediately brought out a brand new pineapple drink for me. The Mac nut fish was crispy with a delicious flavor! Since we were celebrating my birthday, they brought out a giant slice of hula pie for us to share. I felt so taken care of during our meal and would highly recommend for celebrating a special occasion!

The service was outstanding. We went to an early dinner with our 8 month old and the servers went above and beyond to ensure our little and family was comfortable and well taken care of. I don't think it was possible to have a glass of water empty! Definitely a family friendly spot.

We chose this restaurant for a special occasion—celebrating multiple family birthdays on our last night in Kauai. We waited a bit longer to get an oceanfront table, which was worth it for the view and breeze. The drinks and food were good, though not exceptional. Unfortunately, the service took away from the experience. We didn’t feel the Aloha spirit from our server—her name was something like Blasz. There was no warm welcome, and her tone and expressions when taking orders or responding to requests felt uninviting. This created an uncomfortable atmosphere that everyone in our group noticed. It felt like there may be a need for better staff training, particularly around customer service and hospitality. Given how meaningful this trip was for our families, we were hoping for a more memorable and positive final dinner. We travel to Hawaii often, but based on this experience, we wouldn’t return or recommend this restaurant.

Dukes is fantastic. Our server Kelsey was so friendly and took great care of us. The views are fantastic. The salad bar was yummy. The macadamia nut fish and coconut fried shrimp were delicious. We were celebrating our 35th anniversary ans they brought a free hula pie and let me tell you if you have not tried this you need too. It was a perfect sweetness. This is great to share as it is a huge piece. We would definitely come back again.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Must-Visit Near the Airport – Perfect Kauai Finale Duke’s Kauai was the perfect final stop on our island hop from Oʻahu to Kauaʻi, especially before heading to the airport. The location near Lihue Airport is unbeatable after a full day of exploring. We spent the day at Waimea Canyon and Poʻipū Beach, swimming, hiking, and spotting sea turtles, so we were very hungry. We had an early reservation and were seated quickly, and valet parking made arrival completely stress-free. The restaurant is right on the water with beautiful views of the bay — beach volleyball, surfers, a stunning sunset, and even a lighthouse in the distance. The open-air design, indoor garden, and water features make the atmosphere feel relaxed and very “Hawaii.” Food was excellent. I had the Huli Huli chicken and ribs, which were flavorful and filling. The Hawaiian macaroni salad was surprisingly delicious, and the cheeseburgers were a hit at our table. We didn’t have time for dessert, but the famous Hula Pie with macadamia nuts is high on my list for next visit. The salad bar also looked incredible. Service was friendly, efficient, and perfect for travelers on a schedule — we never felt rushed but got out in plenty of time for our flight. If you’re looking for a great restaurant near the Kauai airport with ocean views, solid food, and excellent service, Duke’s Kauai is absolutely worth it and lives up to the hype. #nicoleblessthishome #DukesKauai #KauaiRestaurants #BestRestaurantsKauai #LihueDining #KauaiFood #HawaiiEats #OceanfrontDining #WaimeaCanyonDay #PoipuBeach #HawaiianFood #HuliHuliChicken #HulaPie #IslandHopping #VisitKauai #HawaiiTravel #KauaiVacation #KauaiLife #HawaiiBucketList #SunsetDining #NearKauaiAirport
