Pono Market
About
A Taste of Old Hawaii in Kapaa
Stepping into Pono Market is like walking into a slice of local history on the Eastside of Kauai. This isn't a place for white-tablecloth service; it’s a bustling, no-frills storefront where the line often spills toward the door before the lunch rush hits its peak. The air is thick with the savory scent of shoyu, ginger, and fresh-caught ahi, signaling exactly why locals have made this a Kapaa institution for years.
The Poke Standard
The star of the show is undeniably the poke. Forget the heavy, mayo-laden versions found in mainland supermarkets; here, the fish is treated with reverence. The spicy ahi poke packs a clean, sharp heat, while the shoyu ahi is perfectly balanced with a deep, salt-forward profile that highlights the texture of the fresh catch. If you arrive early enough, you might snag the laulau, which arrives warm and fragrant, wrapped in ti leaves with meat so tender it pulls away with the slightest nudge of a plastic fork.
Know Before You Go
The space is functional and efficient, designed for grabbing a heavy plate lunch and heading straight to the nearby beach parks of Kapaa to eat. Be prepared for a minor logistical quirk: parking in the immediate vicinity can be a competitive sport, especially during the midday surge. Grab your order to-go, find a quiet spot along the coast, and enjoy a meal that defines the flavors of Kauai’s North and East shores.

This is a fantastic spot in Kapaa for authentic, delicious Hawaiian food. It is a local favorite for its fresh poke and generous plate lunches. The atmosphere is simple and unpretentious, making it the perfect place to grab a quick, high quality meal while exploring. They are closed on weekends, so be sure to plan your visit for a weekday morning or lunch.

Can’t go wrong with the authentic poke bowls here. Fresh, delicious fish atop soft white rice, sprinkled with furikake. Have a seat on the picnic tables nearby and enjoy 😎 …

We reached around 1.30PM and most of the food were sold out. However, we were lucky to get a spicy tuna poke bowl which was really good. Highly recommend to top it up with the mustard seasoning also. A bit pricy but we enjoyed it.

If I could give this place more stars I would!!! Probably one of the best food we found on the island!!!! I was bummed that they weren’t open on the weekend to get one last taste 😭! We got lau lau, poke, chicken, and Kailua pig. I took a bite of my kids fried chicken and instantly went back for more!!!!!! That chicken was amazing!!! All of the food was but that chicken was really good!!!!

I got ahi tuna poke here and it was awesome!! It maybe small for some people but perfect size for a Japanese woman like me. Price and the value are perfect much. I had about 6 poke during 7 days stay in Kauai and this place took the first place. It’s a takeout place so we bought what we wanted and ate it at our airb&b

It’s been nearly 10 years since we first visited Pono Market. We stopped by here on a food tour last time we were in the island and had to come back. The food is delicious and so reasonably priced compared to more touristy areas. Perfect stop before going to the airport as there are limited options at Lihue. Perfect friar meal in the island is you’re going north. I had a nice chat with the current owner and it’s an awesome family owned business. Hope to go back sooner than 9 years.

Best poke bowl I have ever eaten. The staff and locals are very friendly and loving. I'm a foodie and say it's the best place in Kauai you can get fresh / delicious poke bowls and the chicken is pretty good too.

Great hole in the wall. Grabbed the Hapa plate with lau lau. Service was prompt and the quality of the food is great. Although the flavors were good, they didn't quite meet expectations hence minus a star. But don't let my preference deter you, definitely check them out.

Best recommendation I got for local food in Kauai. This is a small family hole in the wall restaurant with delicious food. We were the only open for morning to 3 PM. So better get it while it’s hot. I came here and was recommended to try the pork lau lau and the Poké bowl. My mouth is still salivating and craving this as I’m speaking here in the mainland. Besides that they also have cookies and other grab and items to go. Definitely recommend eating here if you really want to eat like the locals. The staff is friendly so if you have a question, just ask.

The spicy ahi was tasty and fresh, and the kimchi had a great, fresh flavor. The shrimp was delicious—large, well-cooked, and coated in a flavorful spicy sauce. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. They even asked which utensil I preferred, a fork or a spoon for the coconut taro cake. Great customer service!
