About
A Reliable Stop for Kauai Locals
Tucked away in the heart of Kapaa, No. 1 Chinese & BBQ V serves as a straightforward, no-frills destination for those craving substantial portions of Cantonese-style comfort food. This spot is defined by its casual, grab-and-go energy; you won't find white tablecloths here, just quick service and the aroma of savory roasted meats drifting out to the sidewalk.
The BBQ Kitchen Experience
The culinary focus here centers on their traditional roasted meats. Regulars frequently line up for the roast duck and char siu, which hang behind the glass display, glistening under the lights. The crackle of the skin on the roasted pork is a sensory highlight, offering a satisfying crunch that contrasts with the tender, seasoned meat underneath. It is the kind of meal meant for a picnic at the nearby beaches or a quick lunch break while exploring the East Side of the island.
What to Expect
The space is functional and efficient, often filled with the clatter of kitchen pans and the hum of Kapaa town activity. Be prepared for a bit of a wait during the peak lunch hour, as this remains a favorite among local residents working in the surrounding area. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in the crowded commercial stretches of the highway, so keep a keen eye out when pulling in. Whether you are grabbing a plate lunch to power through a hike or taking a family-sized portion home, this restaurant provides a consistent, authentic taste of Chinese BBQ that remains a staple of the local Kapaa food scene.

Service was bad… not even attempting to talk English and English is not my first language. Asked for a sample said no understood but then said I could not have my bottled water… will not go back.

I can no longer endorse any of the No. 1 Chinese food locations on the island of Kauai. The food is substandard and of questionable quality and cleanliness.

We have called in a couple times to order food. The same girl who has answered every time has been so rude! We can never understand what she is saying and any time we ask to repeat herself cause we don’t understand she snaps and is so freaking rude! Do not go to this place! They are so rude.

I ordered a side ok kim chee with my meal and this is what I got. I sat down and took a few bites of my meal and just couldn't agree with the portion of Kim chee so I took it back to the lady and asked fir a refund. I told her the order portion is too small and she said no refund. She said that I ate some of it. I told her that I didn't. She conversed with another lady and they were saying whatever in their language then again she told me no, no refund. I asked her once again for my money back then she said she would put more. She was clearly upset! lol She is often a little sassy but I always look past it. This is what my original side order of Kim chee was. I should've just showed the owner as I was having my meal on the table next to him. He is ALWAYS so kind and appreciative. He even asked me if I'd like some iced water after I started eating. Such a wonderful business owner! Food was on point though!

I wish I could give a better review. It's a typical takeout place so if you need a quick, cheap bite it's fine. But maybe don't get the hot bar noodles. Also for the ppl complaining about the service, stop. They're transactional, not rude. I recommend ordering the stuff on the menu and not the hot bar. I got the 3 item platter. The chicken was very tough. The shrimp was good though! Honestly what killed the review for me were the noodles. I think they may have been really old. I went to eat them and they tasted like old oil. It had a very gas-like taste. I think the hot bar food doesn't turn over quick enough to make it fresh. Again, good for a cheap bite.

Take a note of all the bad reviews. Everyone consistently speak about bad customer service and it's true. They are extremely rude and there is no concept of hygiene. Spend your money elsewhere where you are treated as a human being. It's so unfortunate that people serving here have no Aloha. They refused accommodating even a simple request to give rice in a separate container for a combo order, despite mentioning that I was willing to pay for the extra container if needed. The lady at the billing counter seamed to care least about the customers. Didn't buy anything as I didn't want to support such a business, so can't comment on food.

We were craving Chinese and stopped here. We were pleasantly surprised how good this food was. We ordered orange chicken, coconut shrimp and fried rice. It was delicious and only $10.25 for the combination plate with all 3 items. Bargain! The girls working were very nice too.

Always a good spot for sultry comfort food. They used to be located further north in Kapaa and have since moved to the old Kauai Pasta. Clean spot, great for dinning or taking it on the go. Also, an ideal spot for plate lunches or for your catering needs. Consistent and tasty, happy they are back open!
