Monicos Taqueria
About
A for Island Tacos
When you find yourself cruising through Kapaa, the scent of sizzling carne asada often serves as a siren song pulling locals and visitors alike into Monicos Taqueria. This is not your polished, white-tablecloth experience; it is a no-frills, counter-service spot that prioritizes flavor over flash. You will hear the rhythmic chopping of cilantro and the hiss of the flat-top grill before you even reach the register.
The Flavors of Kapaa
The menu leans heavily into traditional Mexican preparation adapted for the tropical pace of Kauai. The fish tacos are a standout, featuring fresh catch that strikes a balance between crispy edges and tender, flaky centers. If you prefer something heartier, the burritos are notoriously large—often requiring two hands to manage—and packed with seasoned rice, beans, and a kick of house-made salsa that carries a genuine heat.
What to Expect
The atmosphere is bustling and casual, making it an ideal pit stop after a morning surf session or a trek through the nearby trails. While the seating area is modest and can get a bit tight during the lunch rush, the steady flow of regulars grabbing takeout is a clear indicator of its status in the East Kauai food scene. Be prepared for a bit of a challenge finding parking during peak hours, but the trade-off is a satisfying meal that captures the unpretentious heart of the island.

The pork flautas melt in your mouth! The margaritas were amazing! The outdoor seating was a plus! The restaurant was close to our condo and we walked to supper!

We ordered the lengua tacos, carne asada nachos, ahi fish tacos, and chicken taquitos with chips and salsa. The lengua was melt in your mouth tender with good flavor! My nachos was packed with steak. I ordered my beans on the side but ended up drizzling it on each bite. The chicken in the taquitos was well seasoned, moist, and tender! The seared ahi tacos were well seasoned and generous in portion. Another family ordered the fajitas that smelled divine! We’re definitely coming back during our next visit!

I ordered the camarones a la diabla expecting a spicy kick, but they were barely seasoned and definitely not “diabla.” The plate came with just a tiny scoop of rice and only two tortillas – not nearly enough to make a meal out of it. They charged for chips and salsa. I expected much better portions and flavor. Really disappointing experience. The biggest shock was the price—$30 for this meal felt like a complete ripoff. – won’t be coming back.

We came to Monico’s Taqueria with a group of 9, and everything was amazing! Every single one of us loved our food – it was fresh, flavorful, and came out quickly even with a big group. Our waitress was incredible – super helpful, friendly, and made sure we had everything we needed the whole time. The drinks were also top-notch! We’ll definitely be coming back. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great food and great service! 🌮🍹

Best Fish Tacos I have ever had in my life. The fish was so fresh and yet juicy. I never had such a combination of taste before. They said it was the catch of the day. It was obvious that the fish was caught that day. The service was great, our waitress attended our every need. The portions were super big too so if you go there, you will be full-no doubt. Overall, everything was delicious and I will definitely go back for those fish tacos!
