Matcha-Ya
About
A Slice of Kyoto in Kapaa
Stepping into Matcha-Ya feels like a sudden departure from the tropical humidity of Kauai’s east side. This small, quiet tea house brings the precision of Japanese confectionery culture to the heart of Kapaa. You are greeted by the earthy, vegetal aroma of high-grade ceremonial powder being whisked into a froth, a sharp contrast to the salty ocean air just a few blocks away.
The Craft of the Whisk
The menu centers on the versatility of stone-ground matcha. Whether you prefer your tea served traditionally in a ceramic bowl or transformed into a signature iced latte, the focus remains on the quality of the sourcing. Regulars often pair their drinks with the house-made mochi or light, airy desserts that rely on subtle sweetness rather than heavy sugar. It is the perfect spot for those looking to escape the midday heat or find a moment of stillness before heading toward the northern shore.
Local Observations
Be aware that space is limited; the intimate seating arrangement means this isn't a place for large, boisterous groups. The acoustics can get a bit echoey when the shop hits peak capacity, so it is best suited for solo readers or pairs looking for a refined, quiet conversation. Parking in downtown Kapaa can be a bit of a dance, so plan to arrive with a little extra time to scout a spot along the main thoroughfare. It is a genuine local gem for anyone craving an authentic, artisan-focused break from standard island fare.

I ordered the matcha/vanilla frosty with matcha drizzle. First of all finding a vegan yummy frosty on the island was not on my bingo card! I was extremely happy and satisfied. The matcha was delicious with no bitter taste at all. I ended up buying their ceremonial grade matcha because of that. They offer (2) vegan gluten free musubis (seaweed rice veggie sandwiches). I would have purchased more if I could have they were THAT good and affordable. I appreciated the staff, everyone was knowledgeable and happy. They also offered fresh star fruit for 50 cents! I definitely can’t wait to come back to try their Japanese style shaved ice.

Best Shave Ice on the island by far. They add ice and flavors in layers as they make it so the flavors are on every bite. No artificial flavors: the syrups are made with real fruit and they put fresh fruit on top. Yum! The owner was so kind and even gave out free samples of fresh baked matcha bread while we were there.

2025: Mimi, the owner, has retired. The shop remains closed till further notice. Matcha-ya, as I found out, carries their own brand of matcha. If you are a fan of high grade matcha for chawan use or a latte that actually tastes like matcha and not sugar you will enjoy this matcha. The matcha lattes they make are a perfect color. The pineapple whipped was quite good as well.

Match-Ya offers a delightful experience with its fresh shaved ice that stands out for its commitment to using no artificial flavors or colors. As someone who enjoys indulging in refreshing treats, I was genuinely impressed by the quality and taste of their offerings. The shaved ice is incredibly fluffy and melts in your mouth, providing the perfect canvas for their natural toppings. What sets Match-Ya apart is their dedication to using real, fresh ingredients. Each flavor burst is derived from fruits and herbs, making it not only a guilt-free treat but also a refreshing alternative to regular sugary snacks. I tried the mango and matcha flavors, and both were vibrant in taste while maintaining an authentic essence that artificial options simply cannot replicate. The presentation is another highlight; the colorful layers of shaved ice topped with fruits make it visually appealing. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to recommend combinations to suit your taste preferences. Whether you're cooling off on a hot day or simply wanting a sweet snack, Match-Ya's fresh shaved ice is an excellent choice. I highly recommend giving it a try—you won’t be disappointed with this refreshing and health-conscious treat!

Super delicious sweet treats! My wife and I got a mango and strawberry shaved ice with condensed milk on top; absolutely delicious! This was also the first restaurant/store on Kauai I have been to that was taking every safety precaution for COVID-19; we’ve been two of only a handful of people we’ve seen on the island wearing masks, so it was refreshing to go to a place that asked you to sanitize your hands before and after paying, AND all the employees were wearing masks. 10/10 would recommend!

I loved that Matcha-Ya was super clean, the workers were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I ordered the Acai Berry Bowl. The berries were incredible with so much flavor. The granola was fresh. My son had a fruit shake and loved it. We will definitely be stopping in again on our next vacation. This was a much healthier alternative to shaved ice.

What a unique shaved ice place! Even my Hawaiian friend says the way they make it is unique. I would however steer away from getting their boba. It’s not really all that consistent or good. Their ice cream is also dairy free, which was music to my ears, and it was good. Nice and light but had a good texture.

This place was amazing! The staff were wonderful and everything is made in house by actual Japanese people with matcha from actual Japan. The menu is big, but they have pictures to help know what you want. The food is delicious too. Matcha everything and it's a great match-a for you! Seriously though, stop on btw.
