Leong's Road House
About
A Slice of Kapaa History
Stepping into Leong's Road House feels like a shortcut back to a simpler era of Kauai dining. Positioned right in the heart of Kapaa, this local landmark isn't about white tablecloths or trendy fusion concepts; it’s about the heavy, satisfying plates that define island comfort food. The air inside is thick with the scent of savory gravies and grilled meats, a stark contrast to the breezy, salt-kissed air of the nearby East Side coastline.
Where Locals Gather
This is the kind of spot where the chatter of residents often drowns out the hum of the overhead fans. It is an ideal refuge for anyone finished with a morning hike at Sleeping Giant or a long drive down the coast who wants to trade a tourist trap for a no-frills meal. You will likely notice the local crowd favoring the generous portions of their signature saimin and various plate lunch staples, which arrive at your table steaming hot.
The Road House Experience
The interior carries a distinct, vintage charm with decor that has seen decades of laughter and rainy afternoons. Don't expect a polished, minimalist aesthetic here; the charm lies in its lived-in, utilitarian edge. It is worth noting that the seating arrangement can feel a bit cozy when the lunch rush hits, and the acoustics can climb when the dining room is full. It is raw, authentic, and unapologetically grounded in the traditions of Kapaa town. If you are looking for a place that favors substance over style and local spirit over polished service, this is where you park your car and tuck in.

We called ahead to make a group reservation for a party of 20. Upon arrival they had half sitting inside and half sitting outside. They have the space and ability to seat us all in one room but didn’t plan well to accommodate that. It took a bit to get our orders placed. Members ordered fun alcohol drinks and didn’t finish them because they were to strong or off tasting. Some ordered virgin daiquiris and seemed to enjoy those more. A variety of dishes were order and a few appetizers. The crab wantons were dry and left an odd taste in your mouth. The steaks are thinner so order just a bit differently than you normally would. The waitress did let us know that when ordering. They didn’t get part of our order out to the table until we reminded them about it. So it came after we finished everything else. There are a large number of Gluten Free options on the menu. It was within walking distance of our hotel so I am not sure on parking space. Parties of 5 or more automatically have a steep gratuity added into the bill. They also charge a 3% CC fee. Overall we didn’t feel the price of the food was matched with the quality and service we received.

Came here to do something different and more local. Really good choice. We beat the rush as there was only one other table seated. We got there just after 5:00pm. (They'd been drinking a bit and were a little loud, but fortunately not rude.) When our server came, we ordered 2 salads, the lobster ravioli appetizer, and our entrées, coconut shrimp and sautéed mahi mahi. I got the specialty salad, which has mac nuts and a spicy peanut dressing. Omg- it was great, and Huge! Two people can easily split one. My wife got the lemongrass salad, equally as big, but not as heavy as it had a vinaigrette dressing. The lobster ravioli came in a cream sauce - similar to Alfredo. Nothing super unique- just good (3) ravioli in a cream sauce. Tasty for sure. The coconut shrimp were huge and crispy, with the sauce already on them. Served with rice and veggies. So good. I had the sautéed Mahi Mahi in a wine and capers cream sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly, so flaky and light. The sauce was a little heavy, but great flavor. It came with buttery mashed potatoes and vegetables. Great meal! A very fair price for all we got. High quality food, nice staff, convenient in Kapaa. We will be back next trip here!

My sister and I had a great meal at Lemongrass yesterday. I had the ribs and she had the catch of the day which was MAHI MAHI. Both were great! We also shared a bottle of wine. The service was great, too. Many reviews mention the road noise. We sat outside and there was road noise. But it didn’t spoil our fun. I would recommend this place.

Nice and cozy restaurant to sit in and eat dinner. We requested for red curry vegetable with tofu to be mild but it was very very spicy even though they mentioned it will be mild. We have seabass dish which was not good at all. Also they hiked up the prices of any of their dishes. Their website had seabass for 26 usd but when we went their it was priced at 32 usd. Taking advantage of the holiday season and tourists are taken for granted. For the price we paid the food did not live upto expectations.

Excellent food, drinks and service. We enjoyed dinner here twice during our 5 nights on Kauai. Their curry dishes, lobster ravioli and macadamia nut crusted sea bass were all amazing. Will 100% dine here again on our next trip to Kauai.
