Coastal Flavors in the Heart of Kapaa

Steps away from the crashing surf on the Kauai coast, Lemon Grass Seafood And Bar serves as a local hub for those seeking unfussy, ocean-to-table plates. The space leans into a casual, open-air aesthetic that captures the breezy spirit of Kapaa. You won’t find white tablecloths here; instead, expect the rhythmic hum of locals catching up over cold drinks and the occasional spirited clatter from the kitchen.

The Culinary Focus

The menu prioritizes the daily haul from local waters. While the selection shifts with the tides and supply, the chefs lean heavily into traditional preparations that highlight the natural sweetness of fresh fish. Think seared ahi or garlic-butter shrimp tossed with aromatics that give the restaurant its namesake scent—a citrusy, herbaceous aroma that hits you the moment you pull open the door.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

The dining room is unpretentious, designed for groups of friends and families who prioritize flavor over formality. It is worth noting that the parking lot gets quite tight during the peak dinner rush; if you arrive after sunset, keep an eye out for spots along the nearby coastal thoroughfare. Whether you are refueling after a morning of exploring the Wailua River or settling in for a laid-back evening, the atmosphere remains consistently relaxed. It is the kind of place where you can comfortably walk in with sandy feet and leave satisfied after a hearty, locally-sourced meal.

We stopped here on a whim and what a great surprise! Fabulous all the way! Started with house salad, beautiful presentation and absolutely delicious all the way from the greens to the dressing! Also tried the crab wantons, creamy and flavorful! Coconut Prawns for the entree, superb! 6 lovely prawns around a mound of jasmine rice on beautifully sliced veggies! Yuuuuuummmm! Service was as great as the food, quietly efficient with a twinkly smile. Quiet and peaceful experience…would most definitely be back!!

We felt discriminated at this place. We entered and the host saw us and asked if we are there for happy hour. We said yes and they made us sit on bar. Ironically, they did not ask it to anyone else. We were at entrance so we know they did not ask it to anyone. The door was constantly open at bar with high wind causing us to sit in uncomfortable environment. Drinks are made using pre-made, food was ok. Service was also ok, we had to wait to even get menu. After poor experience, they charged us more. I have a dispute with credit card. Luckily I figured out they might do it so I took a picture of my receipt to dispute claim as they seemed discriminatory and unethical. Well, I do not want to tip you super high as you expect (which is optional anyways) after such service, you have no right to charge me higher for optional tip. Worst hospitality among all 4 major Hawaii islands, everything else is much better on island.

We called ahead to make a group reservation for a party of 20. Upon arrival they had half sitting inside and half sitting outside. They have the space and ability to seat us all in one room but didn’t plan well to accommodate that. It took a bit to get our orders placed. Members ordered fun alcohol drinks and didn’t finish them because they were to strong or off tasting. Some ordered virgin daiquiris and seemed to enjoy those more. A variety of dishes were order and a few appetizers. The crab wantons were dry and left an odd taste in your mouth. The steaks are thinner so order just a bit differently than you normally would. The waitress did let us know that when ordering. They didn’t get part of our order out to the table until we reminded them about it. So it came after we finished everything else. There are a large number of Gluten Free options on the menu. It was within walking distance of our hotel so I am not sure on parking space. Parties of 5 or more automatically have a steep gratuity added into the bill. They also charge a 3% CC fee. Overall we didn’t feel the price of the food was matched with the quality and service we received.

Came here to do something different and more local. Really good choice. We beat the rush as there was only one other table seated. We got there just after 5:00pm. (They'd been drinking a bit and were a little loud, but fortunately not rude.) When our server came, we ordered 2 salads, the lobster ravioli appetizer, and our entrées, coconut shrimp and sautéed mahi mahi. I got the specialty salad, which has mac nuts and a spicy peanut dressing. Omg- it was great, and Huge! Two people can easily split one. My wife got the lemongrass salad, equally as big, but not as heavy as it had a vinaigrette dressing. The lobster ravioli came in a cream sauce - similar to Alfredo. Nothing super unique- just good (3) ravioli in a cream sauce. Tasty for sure. The coconut shrimp were huge and crispy, with the sauce already on them. Served with rice and veggies. So good. I had the sautéed Mahi Mahi in a wine and capers cream sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly, so flaky and light. The sauce was a little heavy, but great flavor. It came with buttery mashed potatoes and vegetables. Great meal! A very fair price for all we got. High quality food, nice staff, convenient in Kapaa. We will be back next trip here!

My sister and I had a great meal at Lemongrass yesterday. I had the ribs and she had the catch of the day which was MAHI MAHI. Both were great! We also shared a bottle of wine. The service was great, too. Many reviews mention the road noise. We sat outside and there was road noise. But it didn’t spoil our fun. I would recommend this place.

Nice and cozy restaurant to sit in and eat dinner. We requested for red curry vegetable with tofu to be mild but it was very very spicy even though they mentioned it will be mild. We have seabass dish which was not good at all. Also they hiked up the prices of any of their dishes. Their website had seabass for 26 usd but when we went their it was priced at 32 usd. Taking advantage of the holiday season and tourists are taken for granted. For the price we paid the food did not live upto expectations.

Excellent food, drinks and service. We enjoyed dinner here twice during our 5 nights on Kauai. Their curry dishes, lobster ravioli and macadamia nut crusted sea bass were all amazing. Will 100% dine here again on our next trip to Kauai.

We sat outside on the patio. Very charming. We were moved indoors quickly when cloud bursts settled over us. It was a seamless transition. No food was lost 😆. The Chilean Sea Bass is the entrée to try!! Desert was yummy.

This is a beautiful restaurant with great atmosphere. The presentation of the food is beautiful. I have Celiac's Disease so definitely need gluten free and they have a great menu for that and were very helpful with it. I had the scallops which were a bit undercooked and tough (which I could have asked them to cook them more). My virgin Lava drink was great, but had large chunks of ice throughout (which I could have asked them to blend it more). I also had the beautiful Sand ice cream pie. I should have asked them for a spoon instead of the fork they brought me as it was hard to eat the melting ice cream with a fork. I would say the price was less than what I have paid in Hawaii. I am still giving four stars as I could have asked them to alleviate my issues and maybe those things wouldn't have bothered someone else. I am not a negative or picky person......usually.
