About
A Slice of Kauai History in Kapaa
Stepping into Hee Fat General Store feels like hitting the pause button on the modern rush of East Kauai. Originally established as a traditional merchant shop back in 1934, the space has transitioned into a beloved hub for locals and visitors seeking a authentic cool-down. The weathered wooden exterior and nostalgic storefront signage anchor it firmly in the historic landscape of Kapaa town.
The Art of the Tropical Shave Ice
The main draw here is undoubtedly their signature shave ice. Unlike the watered-down versions found at tourist traps, their house-made syrups—featuring real fruit purees like lilikoi, mango, and guava—cling to the ice with a natural intensity. You will hear the rhythmic crunch of the ice shaver working continuously behind the counter, a sound that has become the unofficial soundtrack of afternoons in this part of the island.
What to Expect
The interior remains refreshingly utilitarian. It is not a place for white-tablecloth service; rather, it is where you go to grab a scoop of Roselani ice cream tucked beneath a mountain of finely shaved, flavored ice. While the shop maintains a charming, old-school general store aesthetic with various local trinkets lining the shelves, be prepared to navigate a bit of a crowd on the sidewalk. Finding a spot to park along the main drag can occasionally be a puzzle during peak midday hours, but the cooling relief of a dragonfruit or coconut-infused treat makes the hunt worth the effort. It is the perfect stop for families exploring the coastal highway or anyone looking for a genuine taste of Kauai traditions that haven't been over-polished by modernization.

Okay, what’s not to love about this place?! The staff quickly became our buddies and welcomed my two little boys with open arms when we stumbled upon this special gem. My 5- and 7-year-old boys could hardly contain their excitement over all the neat trinkets. They had so many questions, and the ladies helping us were incredibly patient and kind. We lost count of how many times we left and came back—and every single time, they greeted us with the same enthusiasm. Our boys will cherish their sea turtle souvenirs, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit and more shaved ice!

Find a parking spot and enjoy Kapaa. And while you're here be sure to check out Hee Fat. They have a generous variety of gifts including Mac nuts from a small farmer on the Big Island. The people running the shop are nice so make sure to ask them if you need help.

Saw this place listed online as a contender for best shave ice. I stopped in and got some. I actually enjoyed it more than Wishing Well (still way good), and it blew Wailua Shave Ice out of the water. The gentleman who helped me was a delight to talk to and tidy store. Would definitely recommend to anybody coming by.

This is a fun spot to shop around but the real crowd bringer has to be the shaved ice! They make several flavors every week in house and they are PHENOMENAL! I chose POG and my husband got blueberry, strawberry lilikoi! I will say that the more flavors you add the faster it seems to melt! We choose to walk over to the beach to enjoy ours! We will definitely be back!

Had to drop a friend off at the airport so took a quick jaunt into Kapa’a to check out the supposed “best” shave ice on the island, picture below is a keiki sized Lava Flow with Macadamia Nut Ice Cream. Now I know what shave ice should be. The flavors were perfect, the ice cream delicious and the service was excellent. The shop is cute and they have a lot of flavors. Will stop here whenever I can! Amazing!

Delicious shaved ice and souvenir shop. I got the Lava Flow ice and really enjoyed it while sitting on the bench in front of the store, watching the people shop around me

Whoa. Hold the phone. My first shave ice. Mac nut ice cream Hawaiian Sunrise. Worth the additional cost for the real fruit. Delicious. Got some postcards and a magnet to boot. I’ll be back for some more flavors. Friendly staff. Benches outside.

The BEST shave ice on Kauai. Came here 3 times in a week. It is one of only 2 places I found that makes ALL NATURAL syrups without artificial dye and they are delicious.

After having tried many shave ice places on the island, we have determined that this the best due to the real fruit syrups. Some of the genuinely nicest people work here. They have a bunch of souvenir type stuff here, a mix of everything. Highly recommended!
